O Canada! Our home and native land! True patriot love in all thy sons command. With glowing hearts we see thee rise, The True North strong and free! From far and wide, O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. God keep our land glorious and free! O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. All Canadians know their national anthem. Not only do they know the words in English, but most Canadians know them in French too. Today we experienced Canada Day first hand in the capital city. We began our day by walking up to Parliament Hill to see the changing of the guard, the musical ride (the guards performing on horses), and a small air show. On their own, each activity was a fairly ... read more

canada day ottawaIt’s July 1st- Canada Day! I woke up this morning to find the city full of red and white. After breakfast we headed to Parliament Hill to see the changing of the guard and experience the opening of the 140th Canada Day. There were thousands of people with hats, shirts, and flags ready to celebrate. After the changing of the guard we walked around the different areas and booths all celebrating the multicultural tradition that makes Canada special. We then took a break and had lunch at the National Art Centre. This evening we will continue with a fireworks show and live music concerts which are taking place all around the city. It really is a big party for everyone. I began the day a bit behind the ball due to sleeping in after a truly decadent evening at the B.goods mobile bakery launch party. The sample treats were delicious AND relatively healthy, and the awesome Northern Brazilian music of Forro in the Dark had us almost dancing off all those cookies! So I missed my group (Dende do Recife)’s first roda in the Market (downtown market area of Ottawa). Then I had a bit of a repeat of my unsuccessful Friday evening attempts to find Capoeira. One of the things I was actually looking forward to with my return to Canada was that I thought some things would be so much easier. So it was quite funny to not be able to track down my capoeirista friends due to delayed emails, websites not being ... read more

Canada TravelsMy alarm went off at four a.m. this morning. Yes, that's one a.m. California time. Needless to say the flight into Ontario, Ottawa, the capital of Canada was lovely. I slept the whole time. After making it into the Hotel Indigo (which is very cute and is full of free Aveda products!) we headed down to Michael's house for drinks and appetizers. Michael is the director of Canada Fulbright and his wife is the superintendent of schools in Ottawa. The night was a completely new experience for me. I met Canadian teachers and trainers that were really excited about what they were doing. I spent a long time talking to another Christine, who is a trainer in writing. She trains her teachers on how to use the six traits of writing and has been very ... read more

Ottawa, CanadaI have finally arrived in Canada this morning. I am in Ottawa, the capitol city of Canada. The flight from Washington, D.C. was only one hour and thirty minutes, but we left for the airport in D.C. at 5:00 AM. Let's just say, I was not completely aware of where I was until I was about to land in Ottawa. It's interesting to note that all of the anouncements on the plane, as well as all of the signs are in both French and English, Canada's two official languages. This city is beautiful, and much of it reminds me of Europe. The city is in the province of Ontario, and during the winter has the longest ice skating rink in the world. After arriving to our hotel, we went on a guided walk of the ... read more

We are looking forward to our summer Baltic Cruise on our beloved Prinsendam. We leave July 6th, fly to Paris and intend to do the trip up and down the Seine on the Bateau Mouche, which we did not do 29 years ago because we could not afford it! Then we train to Amsterdam ( wonderful memories of our 200$ each Eurail pass for 30 days of travel) to meet friends from the 2006 World Cruise- looking forward to seeing Ella and Leon from New York, Bruce and Vicky from Australia and Ross and his daughter from Toronto. We board the Prinsendam and go back to our old room- nice, for 2 weeks of heavy duty touring, cruising eating and living- again, nice. We will transit the Kiel canal, tour Berlin, Germany and stay overnight in ... read more
