Ottawa has thrown me for a loop - the snow is nearly all gone replaced by torrential rains, resembling those of Vancouver Island. I was prepared to battle snow and cold for the next two months before leaving for Kigali, but must admit the rain makes me feel like home, which lessens the amount of time I will spend shleping through the snow before basking in the tropical temperatures of Kigali!... read more

I decided that whilst I was in Montreal I would set off to see the capital for a couple of days whilst it was a short train ride away. I was very underprepared for the -24 temperatures when I got there and made a stupid choice to walk 1.5km to a museum rather than take the bus. I don't think I have ever been so cold. Ottawa is actually quite a small city compared to Montreal and is still very French. It is actually right on the border between Ontario and Quebec which is part of the reason why it was even chosen as the capital in the first place. I did a few of the cultural sights such as the Civilisation Museum and a parliament tour, stayed in an old prison in a dorm with ... read more

Well winter is here and it's here to stay! I always thought -4 degrees in Donegal during the winter was cold but it's so much colder here that -4degrees is the indoor temperature! Over the past two weeks we have had a low of -23degrees with certain days seeing no warmer than -10degrees. To be honest it's grand and makes regular stuff like getting milk that much more of a fun challenge! Haven't done much travelling over the past few weeks due to the weather, instead we've (Colm and I) have sourced the local Irish community and we now play in an indoor football league every Monday. (PLD 3 W3 D0 F17 A8 PTS9) Apart from that we are keeping the Irish stereotype up by hitting the town the odd night. Colm has befriended a few ... read more

First let me say that I am beginning early in fact, 1 month prior to our planned departure. I am doing this in order to completely familiarize myself with the procedure for recording our journeys. I have employed the plural as it is my intention to use the Blog on an ongoing basis, first to record our trip to the Sunny South, this time only as far south as Florida, and following that we will also record our trip to Germany and Holland. This trip has a departure date of April of 2008. Beyond that I am not prepared to speculate at lest of facebook. I do hope that all who read about our travels will enjoy and please feel free to comment. The very fist leg of our journey will be from our ... read more

Ok, for my dedicated readers back in the Nolalu/Kakabeka/Thunder Bay region who have not stopped checking my blog since I stopped writing... here's a long awaited update. R and I are sufficiently settled into our new home and are loving it. The location is ideal, there is ample room, and we no longer have to trek our dirty laundry to the laundromat. We have a kitchen table and an office, and a huge bathroom... You could fit about four of our Ireland apartments in here. Anyway, check out the photos for a look at our sweet digs. In other news I am now working at CSV architects (www.csv.ca) which is great so far. I will be working there until the end of the summer, so almost one full year. Next semester I have two classes per ... read more

Well hi there, Last week mainly consisted of getting to know Ottawa, Colm's sister coming up from Toronto to see us, Colm falling in love with a bear and finally some lumber jacking in quebec. With the weather still keeping well above normal temperatures Colm and I took a few trips into the city to scope out the local talen.......eh local scenery. With Ottawa being the capital city of Canada, the inner city looks the part with a good combination of shops, restaurants and beautiful pedestrian areas. I took a few more pictures of the parliament buildings as they define Ottawa's scenery no matter where you are in the city. I also took a picture of Colm falling head over heels with a bear....Meagan i'm so sorry but the bear was kind of pretty and brought ... read more

Hi all!! Well I left the “green isle” on the 25th and managed to navigate Dublin and Heathrow airports without too much hassle. I was seated beside a rather strange lady on the plane. She had very little English and all she did was point at my food, as if to say “are you eating that?” As a result I had very little to eat and was starving by the time I got to Ottawa International Airport (5pm Canadian time). Colm met me at the airport and we got the bus to our apartment. Ottawa is a little bit bigger than Cork in size with a lot more people (approx 800,000). Its super clean and the real easy to get around. It houses the Canadian parliament buildings which look remarkably similar to those found in London…..much ... read more

From Winnipeg we flew to Toronto and then up to Ottawa. Arriving at 21:30, just in time for a trip to the pub. We went to a bar just round the corner from the hotel and enjoyed a couple of pints before retiring for a good night's sleep. The next day I slept in and was up and off out at 11am. Being right in the centre of Ottawa meant not to far too walk to get to the main sights. I walked a couple of blocks and just happened to pass a Starbucks - I tell ya, I can sniff them out!!! I grabbed a morning latte and kept on strolling. This was my first visit to Ottawa and I was looking forward to exploring. Ottawa sits at the junction of three rivers - the ... read more
