Mike and Charlotte

A year off with no job, kids or mortgage. Just towering backpacks and each other. Where to? Southeast Asia sounds like a good place. But first we'll cross Canada from our home in Vancouver to Halifax. We'll make sure Elli the cat has a nice place to stay. Then it's on to Toronto for Xmas and Glasgow, Scotland for New Year. With aching livers we'll hit Bangkok on January 9th. From there? We'll let you know. Visit often.

Hello, I know, believe it or not, it's us!!! Not many travelblogs have been rolling out lately. This is really just a quick one. It's been a bit of a different summer this, not so much traveling. A lot of this is due to the fact that we are currently 9 months pregnant and looking forward to welcoming our new addition very soon. We're hoping the wee nipper is better behaved than Daddy and we're sure to influence the travel gene into every day life. Even so, we have enjoyed being in England for Alan and Kat's wedding. Charlotte also enjoyed a few weeks up in Scotland where she very much enjoyed being pampered by the family. A very nice time was had just relaxing and being with everyone and of course, catching up with friends. ... read more

It's been a while since we've had a blog. Life has been fairly quiet lately and a lot of time has been spent in Vancouver. We had hoped to go to Nova Scotia at Christmas but that plan soon got squashed by over 50cm of snow falling in Vancouver which is a rarity. Add that to snow in Halifax and the fact that it's the busiest travel time of the year and you get the idea that going stand by definitely wasn't going to work. So home we stayed and enjoyed being snowed in, literally. We had a few snowy drives around Stanley Park and winter white wonderland trudges to the local pubs on Commercial Drive and that made up our holiday week. We did manage to make it out to our friend Mike and Jina's ... read more

We lied, we managed to fit in a wee trip before the end of the year - so hurrah, another travelblog abounds. The first part of the trip was a solo one for Charlotte. Bidding for vacation the year before doesn't always work out. So as a result, Charlotte had all her vacation time in October and November. It's been a big year money wise with trips to the UK and of course, our wonderful wedding so it wasn't possible to do too much this time around. With Mike busy at work with the Canadian elections it was a chance to slip away for a few days. One good thing about having holiday time in October is that most places aren't too busy. I managed to get a hotel in Las Vegas for 23 US a ... read more

Most of our time in Nova Scotia was spent on Mike's Mum and Dad's farm. Janet, Mike's Mum had surgery whilst we were there so it was perfect timing in that we got to spend some time with her beforehand and then visited her in hospital afterwards. The hospital was in Kentville, about and hour and a half from Halifax - on the West side of Nova Scotia. We managed to fit in a couple of visits. We stayed overnight at Annie and Deke's, Aunt and Uncle. On the way home from their house in St. Margaret's Bay, we stopped at Peggy's Cove. However, it was swarming with people and we back tracked just further along the road and got a great view of the lighthouse from across the water. After three attempts, we finally got ... read more

The end of our last blog saw us in pursuit of somewhere to do our washing after being on the road for over a week. However, our plan to fly into Halifax and then go and stay overnight at Mike's parents farm was soon squashed. By a bird!!! We phoned Westjet whilst driving towards Toronto and listed on the afternoon flight to Halifax. The reservation agent said that we should be fine going standby as there was space on the flight. When we arrived at the airport, we soon found out that would not be the case. The flight had been cancelled due to a bird flying into the engine. As a result, all the flights that day were full and we were re-scheduled to fly standby the next day, but to Montreal. Not quite what ... read more

Our drive back to Canada was fairly uneventful and even the wait at the border wasn't too long - an hour and a half or so. We reached Toronto airport at 7pm. Our friend Ben came to pick us up and after a quick stop at the house to pick up some extra provisions, we were soon on the road again. We drove North of Ontario into the Haliburton Highlands to the small town of Minden. We arrived late and all the others were off to bed. The next day we were up early and so was everyone else. Jen, Ben and baby Matthew and Jen's brother Paul and his girlfriend Delaney. Jen's side of the family have recently bought the cottage and it's been a huge renovation project. They have done some amazing work and ... read more

Unfortunately, I found out that we had an extra hour that we didn't know about until after I'd come back from a quick run around the shops!!! Typical, however I did discover that Macy's in Chicago has 7 floors. That's right - 7! Even I was a bit lost. We were in Chicago for the Lollapalooza, a 3 day music festival which took place in Grant Park. The park sits on the edge of downtown and Lake Michigan. 8 stages were set up across the park and over 75,000 fans per day enjoyed music from artists such as Kanye West, Wilco, Rage Against the Machine, Sharon Jones, Nine Inch Nails, Gnarls Barkley and The Raconteurs. The weather was amazing for the whole three days, warm and sunny. On the Friday evening, the day we arrived in ... read more

It all started with a red-eye, overnight flight from Vancouver to Toronto. The plane was full and we were jammed in, sitting bolt upright, for four and a half hours. Needless to say, not much shut eye was to be had. We landed into Toronto at 7am. After collecting our bags, we wearily wandered to the rental car desks to pick up our motor. After collecting the keys we were soon on our merry way. About an hour into the drive we decided that a night of no sleep meant that we were pretty tired. We stopped at the services along the highway and slept for an hour in the car. It was a pretty good nap considering and set us up for some more driving. We were heading West of Toronto and making our way ... read more

After the chaos of planning a wedding on the other side of the globe and our amazing wedding week in Scotland, we were pretty much KNACKERED!!! After the long journey from Glasgow to Toronto and then Calgary before finally reaching Vancouver, we were ready for a break. After unpacking and repacking we were soon on a plane bound for Honolulu and some piece and quiet. We knew we would be exhausted by the time the wedding was over and that relaxing was all we would want to do. That pretty much sums up our time in Honolulu. We stayed in the Queen Kapiolani Hotel which sits at the very end of Waikiki, so a little quieter than being right in the middle of the action. We had a great view from our room, straight out to ... read more

A day I'd imagined all my life and what a day it would turn out to be. I think nearly every little girl dreams of her wedding day, the beautiful dress - marrying the man of your dreams. For me, I always wanted to be by water, in the open air. Scotland was ideal, perfect and home. It took months of research to decide that we could do it there, as the strong pound against the Canadian dollar made it an expensive choice. However, with some help, the possibility turned into reality. We started planning and my trip over at Christmas proved a big help in this process. My Mum and I spent a very busy four days visiting people and most of the groundwork was already done. I'd taken my dress (purchased in Las Vegas ... read more
