When entering new cities, we'd found ourselves to be quite wary and over-cautious, but as our train rolled into Ottawa, our 7th city so far on the trip, this feeling wasn't so strong. Whether this was because we were staying in a converted jail so we thought we'd be safe, we're not sure! On arriving at the hostel, we found our converted jail hadn't been converted much at all! Apart from the entrance hall and reception area which were very modern with computers and vending machines, once we went through the big steel door onto the 'suicide-proof' stairs, it suddenly became quite scary, like we had imagined a prison to be. (Only from watching Bad Girls and Prison Break though, we don't have any other prison experiences...honest!) Our room consisted of a squeaky bunk bed, a ... read more

Lame joke, no? I thought of it on the bus and thought I may as well put it in. So after the short 2 hr 40 minute bus ride from Montreal, I was in Ottawa, Canada’s capital! I caught a taxi from the Greyhound station to my hostel, which is actually in the old jail! I saw that there were tours of the jail every night, so signed up for one straight away. The jail tour was pretty cool, we were shown all the old cells, went into solitary confinement (which I could NOT handle, by the way), saw the cells the inmates were put into when they were on death row, and where hangings took place. This jail was the site of the last public hanging in Canada. Pretty eery! After the tour I wandered ... read more

Hey! So what have I been up to recently? Well yesterday me and Michelle spent the day shopping together. It was a lot of fun. But... I actually didn't buy anything but a Cinnabon. Mmm... so good. Then today, I went to the spa with my mom, Kristy and Lynn and we had the best pedicures ever, we had a foot massage and all kinds of creams and it was so AMAZING! I painted my toes a bright purple pink. They are so cute. Then for supper my mom, sister and I went to a restaurant called Japenese Village. It's so cool there. They make the food right in front of you. The table goes around a steel grill thing. And they make a huge fire at one point that flares up and they flip the ... read more

Hey There! Just got home from 3 days at the lake. It was a lot of fun. We got there around 7:30 Friday night and then Kelly and I stayed up until 2 am talking. We shared a lot of funny stories. Then Saturday we all went swimming and in the hottub and of course... suntanning. I also tried to cast my sisters fishing rod and ended up tangling it so badly we had to restring the line. Put it this way... I am so not a fisher. Then that night we had Mark's "cottage" birthday with Claires. It's been a tradition for aout 8 years now. Claire got a really vute Aritzia skirt and top... which I can fit into!! haha! yeah :D Then we had cake and Mark, Kelly and I stayed up late ... read more

Hey There! So finally, we got into Ottawa yesterday around 4:30 pm there time. Once we got back to good old Chapel Hill, I went over to one of my best friends house. Megan, Michelle and Amy were all waiting there and so we decided to go to Place d'Orleans mall. We ate supper there, shared some stories from the past year and then did some shopping. We bought bath ball things and burst them outside. We also rode in a shopping cart and bought iced hot chocolates. It was great to see everyone again. Next week once I'm back from the lake I'll try and meet up with them again and for sure we'll get together once I'm back from France. This morning I slept in till 12 o clock. Then Kristy (the Brazeaus eldest ... read more

Chicago Fabulous city, pretty architecture, nice parks. One of those places where they've obviously made an effort to keep it looking nice, even with the curse of 70's concrete attacking the picture every now and then. Lots of daft shaped tower blocks surrounded by enough glass giving the city an occasionall bright shimmer. Millenium Park, near Lake Michigan was nicly sculpted, real artists given free reign over certain chunks, and included the bonus of a covered stage full of musicians practising for the following nights concert. Pleasant Classical music to amble and sunbathe by is always rather nice. Headphone had been providing me with heavy metal up till then so it was a weird contrast. Had full day to wander the city so inevitably I got bored and wandered into the cinema. Kung Fu Panda on ... read more

We got to Ottawa around 9:00 PM and went directly to Joey’s place, one of Nigel’s friends from Moncton. The first night was very relaxed. We went to this pub close to Joey’s place, had a few beers and headed to his place for a nice sleep. June 20th We slept in and had a nice lazy morning for the first time. Unfortunately, Joey had to work during the morning, but he got to meet Wayne Gretzky, so we don’t feel bad for him . When he got back, we headed downtown Ottawa on our bikes, which was very fun. Joey was a great tour guide, he took us to great spots and we went on a tour of the Parliament building. It happened to be the chicken and rib festival (which is world wide barbecuing ... read more

Well we have some unfortunate news...our laptop computer has died!!!! It served us well for many years but unfortunately could not stand up to the power of Samuel's reach with the mug of tea. Yes, while chatting with Nanny and Poppy on Skype yesterday (Sunday) Samuel managed to reach (man his reach is getting too long) the tea and proceeded to knock it over the keyboard. The computer continued to work yesterday but now the keyboard won't work! Otherwise it seems to be fine but we just can't type!!!! Thankfully the hotel we are staying at in Ottawa has a free computer for guest use. Yes we are in Ottawa. We had a great weekend with Darlene and the boys. We went to the beach on Sat and did a little bit of shopping. Yesterday was ... read more

Well, my journey out to the eastern part of Canada continues. I'm currently in Ottawa right now, and I'll be leaving for Montreal this afternoon. Ottawa's an interesting city. I've enjoyed my stay here, short as it may be. But more on that later. I'd like to talk about Niagara Falls first. Just before leaving Toronto for Ottawa, I took a one-day trip to Niagara Falls. It's only the most famous waterfall in the world, so why not go check it out? When talking about Niagara Falls, you have to separate the Falls from the Town, as they are a weird sort of yin and yang. Simply put, the Falls themselves are an awesome specimen of nature, cheapened only by the Las Vegas atmosphere on the main drag of the city, Clifton Hill. Let's start with ... read more
