"Homer, when are you going to give up this crazy sugar scheme?" "Never, Marge. Never! I can't live the button-down life like you. I want it all: the terrifying lows, the dizzying highs, the creamy middles! Sure, I might offend a few of the bluenoses with my cocky stride and musky odors -- oh, I'll never be the darling of the so-called "City Fathers" who cluck their tongues, stroke their beards, and talk about "What's to be done with this Homer Simpson?"" The Simpsons Ow. Stupid head on pounding. I declaration pain! Sorry, I went on a pub crawl with a bunch of people from my hostel last night, and I'm paying for it now. It was totally worth it though - I had a great time. You ever have one of those days where you're ... read more

Well, my journey out to the eastern part of Canada continues. I'm currently in Ottawa right now, and I'll be leaving for Montreal this afternoon. Ottawa's an interesting city. I've enjoyed my stay here, short as it may be. But more on that later. I'd like to talk about Niagara Falls first. Just before leaving Toronto for Ottawa, I took a one-day trip to Niagara Falls. It's only the most famous waterfall in the world, so why not go check it out? When talking about Niagara Falls, you have to separate the Falls from the Town, as they are a weird sort of yin and yang. Simply put, the Falls themselves are an awesome specimen of nature, cheapened only by the Las Vegas atmosphere on the main drag of the city, Clifton Hill. Let's start with ... read more

Well, I'm on the road again, if only for a little while. The company I work for sent me on a course to Toronto, so here I am! Thanks work! I was only supposed to be here four a few days, but that seemed like a waste, so I took some vacation time and stretched my trip out for another week. The plan is to spend a couple more nights here in The Big Smoke (I didn't get to see as much as I wanted in the evenings after my course), then head off to Ottawa and Montreal. I've got about a week left, so it'll be a whirlwind tour, but hey, better a whirlwind tour than no tour at all, right? And frankly, I need the vacation. I've been kinda down the past couple of ... read more

AUTHOR'S NOTE: Sorry for the delay, everyone, but I'm back to life and reality now, and I've been in some strange mix of busy and lazy. Oh well, better late than never, right? I hope you all enjoy it! Hello guys & dolls, how are all of you? Man, a lot has happened since my last entry! I went to Stockholm and Kalmar during my time in Sweden (with a brief stop in Malmo), then back to Copenhagen for a day, and then to Amsterdam, and from there, home. So that's it. I'm done. Finito. Finished. Oh well, I can't complain. I had a great time, and I got to go to Europe again, which really wasn't in the plan. Plus, I finished this trip with a story, and in my book there's nothing better ... read more

Howdy folks! I've been bumming around Denmark for the past few days, after spending half a day in Amsterdam. Found a really cheap flight from Schipol Airport, only $144 Euros! I've always wanted to go to Denmark (I don't really know why), so here I am. How has it been so far? Well honestly, it's been up and down. I would probably be enjoying Denmark more if it wasn't for having to endure a ton of bullshit from the HI (Hostelling International) hostels here. But more on that later. First, a brief blurb on Amsterdam. The last time I was here was about six years ago, on my first ever backpacking trip. It was pretty cool then, and it's pretty cool now. There's still women in the windows selling their wares and a copious amount ... read more

Howdy all! I hope everybody's doing good! It's been a hectic week here in Holland. A good week, but hectic. Most of my time here has been spent visiting family and friends, but Dad and I did manage to visit the town of Holten and walk around Deventer Centrum (City Center). Visiting the family again is always fun. It's been 6 years since the last time I was in Holland, and it is my country of heritage, so I'm always stoked to go back. For those who don't know, only my mom, dad, brother, and recently my cousin Roy live in Canada - everybody else is in Holland. I have something like 16 or 17 aunts and uncles here, so I have a lot of people to see. Each side of the family had a ... read more

You know, it's funny how life works. Three short weeks ago, I was complaining about being home and missing the thrill of being somewhere different. I've been sorting all the shit I brought back from this trip with me and wondering when (not if) I would get the chance to do this again. Well, it turns out that I'm leaving for my next trip tomorrow! I'll be spending 2 -½ weeks in Europe, coming back on May 31st. Some of you may be asking, "Tom, how the hell did this happen?!" Well long story short, my parents are both dutch immigrants, and my Dad was looking to go to Holland for a little while to visit his parents. He happened to find an extremely cheap flight, and when he told me how much it cost, ... read more

"I immediately regret this decision." ~ Ron Burgundy "He insist we not fly, in case the Jews repeated their attack of 9/11." ~ Borat "I cannot rest from travel: I will drink Life to the lees: all times I have enjoyed Greatly, have suffered greatly, both with those That loved me, and alone;" ~ Alfred Lord Tennyson, "Ulysses" Hey everyone, I'm back. Did you miss me? It's true, it's true, I'm back in E-Town. Oh woe is me! I'm sitting in an internet cafe in Edmonton as I write this. Originally, I was scheduled to come home on May 23rd, but it took a little reality check in New Zealand before I realized I should be moving my ticket up. New Zealand's an expensive country, and if I stayed there an extra month without working, ... read more

You know, all this backpacking, this going around and exploring the world, seeing new things, experiencing foreign cultures first hand, meeting people, drinking beer... I'm sick of it! Get on the bus, get off the bus. See the sights, take a picture, move to the next sight. Talk, swap travel stories, drink beer. Book a hostel, get some food, go to sleep, repeat. BOOOOOOOORRRRRING! I tellin' you, it's beginning to feel like I'm working or something! You know what? I need a VACATION! OK, OK, so I'm not getting tired of backpacking - that's a steaming load of bullshit. But I have been getting the itch to go somewhere tropical for a while now, so booked a flight to Fiji way back in February. My first choice was actually Samoa, but the flight was expensive ... read more

Jagged mountains sprout out of the pristine sea, their snow-capped peaks glimmering in the morning sun. The low hum of the engine fills your ears as your boat gently pushes along the water, wind ruffling your hair as it rushes by. Dolphins playfully follow, beckoning you to join them, but all you can do is stand on the deck and admire this piece of unspoilt beauty. Seems like one hell of a fantasy, doesn't it? Well it's not a fantasy, it's Milford Sound. It's real, and is another entry on the long list of beautiful spots in New Zealand. Also on that list is the Otago Peninsula (near the city of Dunedin), and Mt. Cook. But first thing's first, let's start with Milford Sound. You know that expression, 'pictures say a thousand words'? Well, when ... read more
