After breakfast we walked to the lake with the intentions of canoeing but it was $35 for just half an hour, with it being so huge, half hour wasn’t going to get you far! Our hotel has an ex guide dog that you can walk, really cool idea but unfortunately for us he has weekends off - probably a good thing, might have been hard to smuggle him into our room! LAKE MORRAINE So it was ‘off to the Volvo’! We drove to Lake Morraine (just 15km from lake Louise) along with the rest of Canada it seems as the car park was beyond full, people were parking up to 3kms away. Tim dropped me off (still a dashing husband!) and then had to park the car about 500metres up the road, he did really well ... read more

Woke up looking forward to another awesome day in Canada - we are white water rafting the Kicking Horse route and then going to Lake Louise to stay at the famous Fairmont Chateau, the hotel that is always used in the postcards. So we got up early (6am, way too early for Tim) to check out of our hotel and then drive to the rafting place. Because it was so early we had a really good run (so much for the roadworks holding us up as and could have slept in for another hour - sorry Tim! Went to the very exotic McDonalds for breaky on the run, I think it was too early for the guy working there too, because he was none too please when I asked for a Bacon and Egg McMuffin minus ... read more

I left Fernie the night before and spent the night on the bus. We made a brief stop in Calgary for an hour and then it was back on the bus to Banff. I slept the majority of the way but did wake every once and a while to catch a glimpse of the snow capped rockies. When i got to Banff, i walked to the center of town and got in touch with AJ who was cleaning an apartment the boys had been drinking at the night before. Banff reminded me alot of Queenstown in NZ, it had a very tourist feel to it which made me more keen to check out the nightlife here. Everyone back home had told me sunday night was the big night here so i hoped that i could convince ... read more

'Ladies and Gentlemen, we will be landing in Calgary in 10 minutes. The current time in our destination is 7 o'clock, it is a clear night and a cool -23.....wow! After passing out early in the evening we both woke up in the wee early hours of the morning stomachs rumbling. After waiting until 06.00 we decided we would spoil ourselves and order room service. 'We'll have four pancakes, fruit and two orange juice please' - a knock at the door soon after and we are confronted with what appears to be the rounds for our whole floor. 'wow it looks like everyone wants the same order as us this morning' - after she unloads four plates of four high, large pancakes, four plates of fruit, four maple syrup cups, four cream cups, two glasses of ... read more

September 30, 2009 Where the heck are the bear? Today, after breakfast, we left for a ride up to Lake Louise. We’ve said in the past that we all naturally prefer the US to Canada and how happy we were to be back in the states earlier in the trip…but we all agreed; the Canadian Rockies out do the American Rockies, hands down! These mountains are higher, deeper and grander than any we’ve seen before! They seem to be everywhere. At any given point, we were surrounded on three sides by incredible vistas. And arriving at Lake Louise, we were simply amazed at the picture postcard view! (But still no bear!) We moved further up the mountain to Lake Moraine which was also quite beautiful but bitter cold with a temperature of 40 degrees and a ... read more

From Marja The last couple of days has been looking at the most amazing views. Shell made her mind up that she loved Canada at around Vancouver. I have been impressed but not willing to commit to the "Wow this is amazing" rating until now. You really do need to do something spectacular to be on par with NZ, Peru and Scotland, but, yes, the Canadian Rocky Mountains has made the grade. I won't pick a favourite cause I can't but just believe me when I tell you that they are all great sights. Besides that, every town here loves a good fake animal on the outside of their shops. I even found a life size plastic cow INSIDE a shop today! That hasn't happened since Helsinki! Photos of everything I've taken are on http://www.flickr.com/photos/violettesaunty/collections/72157622226967687/ or ... read more

... read more

Today we spent some time in the town of Jasper walking on a path along the train tracks toward the station. Mid-day we left for Lake Louise which was about a 4 hour ride. Along the way we had a brief stop at the Columbia Icefield which was amazing and very cold. We also saw 4 adult bears and 2 baby bears which were right along the roadway at 3 different spots. Wow is really all you can say about Lake Louise. The hotel is right on the lake so we decided to canoe and get some cool pictures of the mountains and the hotel.... read more
