Geo: 51.4262, -116.178Today we spent discovering the delights of the Rockies. We began this morning by going to Lake Louise. This lake is stunningly beautiful. At one end is Mount Victoria with the Victoria glacier evident on its slopes. At the other is a huge resort hotel called Chateau Lake Louise. To stay and visit here we had to buy a pass from the Parks and Wildlife department which covers all this area. There were many people at Lake Louise. We walked from one end of the lake to another. One way took about 40 minutes. We stopped for many photos which I will include in this entry. The walk was fairly easy with few uphill spots. After we walked back we then moved on to Moraine Lake. This is in the Valley of the Ten Peaks. ... read more

Geo: 51.4262, -116.178We were without internet last night so this is an update of the last couple of days. We spent this time doing what we really enjoy the most. We trawled the wineries of the Okanagan Valley. We set out by driving towards Naramata on the shores of Lake Okanagan. Our first stop was at La Frenz which was owned by an Australian. However, the best part of this was the stunning view of the lake from the tasting room. We then made a poor choice of stopping at Elephant Island winery. This proved to be a fruit winery!! They had wine made from apricots, cherries, black currants and pears. Not our taste at all !! We were driving to Lake Breeze, ( had to go there with the obvious Langhorne Creek connections) when a ... read more

We woke to the sounds of rain and trains, which incidentally are amazingly long here, they have hundreds of carriages. They are impressive to look at, but when you want a relaxing sleep in they don’t impress me much. I’m not sure whether Dad had too much cheese before bed, or whether he’d been listening to too many campfire stories about bears, but when we got out of our tent he told us that in the night bears had been circling our campsite. He still sticks by his story to this very day, but none of us heard or saw anything and the staff at the campsite reported no sightings. Looks like this mystery will go unsolved. Banff and its surrounding area thrives with wildlife, and we were lucky enough to eye many different species. After ... read more

Day 3 (June 30, 2008): Made it to Lake Louise I broke camp this morning at 0530. Not because I needed to be up at that hour but because I was slept out…lots of fresh air causes a person to sleep very good and I have been sleeping extremely well. The routine is getting down but I always want to expect the unexpected. Like tonight I am at the Lake Louise National Park and started to set up camp. And then the unexpected…it started to rain. Got all my gear wet but it will dry out…I try and keep my clothing as dry as possible. Tonight I’ll cover the bike so that I will have a dry seat tomorrow. I left Calgary (population one million!) this morning and in front of me were the awesome Canadian ... read more

So the travel blog finally begins again.. I’m on the Greyhound, about to leave for Lake Louise! I had the worst night’s sleep last night. It was 30+ degrees yesterday and last night seemed about the same, so so hot in the hostel room. We had the air con on, but I think once there are three people sleeping in a small room, there’s not much you can do to keep the heat at bay. I do love that hostel though, and will definitely be staying there whenever I return to Vancouver. I met a nice English girl named Sarah, who had just spent 7 months working in Banff. I woke up at 4 this morning, after a good hour of sleep (kill me now) and made my way to the Greyhound. I’ve got the back ... read more

Imagine how your body would feel flying from 37 degree 99% humidity, straight into fresh powder and gusty alpine winds...... Imagine, and you'll have a slight idea as to the full body shock we've just experienced. Arriving to a Canadian summer without beanies, gloves, snowshoes and ski jackets was our first mistake. Not hiring a car was our second. Ah well, we made it to Lake Louise and spent 2 days hiking an average of 20km's a day around the bluest of blue lakes, marvelling at postcard-worthy scenery. We met a friendly Latvian called Ugis who joined us in our adventures dodging grizzly bears, climbing mountain trails knee-deep in snow, sipping hot chocolates atop more mountain lakes and rolling home exhausted in the 10pm daylight.... read more

Today was slacking off day for me as I start work tommorrow. Pat and I decided to walk to the Mountain Resort today. It took about 45minutes slow strolling along the highway. The scenary was amazing. The wind cold and chilly but the sun was sooo warm. The walk itself wasn't hard. Pat was freaking out about bears, and we found out that they actually come out unto the highway. My aim is to see one in the wild and take a picture...without being eaten. We also saw signs saying " don't walk here due to bears" it helped freak pat out a bit more. Lake Louise Mountain Resort is closed until May 15th, but it seems HUGE! I can't wait to see it with ppl so we can go on the lifts and do hiking. ... read more

its now 2230 and the sun has just set about 30minutes ago. Pat and I finally made it to lake louise. First the JOURNEY: Well this morning we got up in chilly weather in HI Hostel, Calgary. Pat didn't sleep ALL night so he was tired all day today..thats jet lag for you! We got our SIN organised but couldn't find the bank. The city of calgary was very quiet..even at 9am in the morning. Hardly anyone was around apart from the what seemed like homeless people ( I don't wanna make assumptions) its a VERY small city and pat and I managed to walk the main part of it within an hour. There were a couple of cars but not much. Also, their trains look like melbourne trams...it was quite trippy. Everything looked closed..but i ... read more
