The bear ranch was absolutely fantastic and we saw lots of bears but not attacked by any. The closest we came walking was about 30 feet but closer in the car. The blog won't upload pics at the moment so I'm not going to tell you about the last 5 days as I'm sure I'll bore you all if you don't have pics to go with the stories. We left the bear ranch at 1130 this morning, it was sunny and mid twenties. Six hours later we are in Lake Louise where it is lightly snowing and a cold 5 degrees. The food at the bear ranch was fab, I now love asparagus. We have eaten fresh, healthy food (plus desserts) for the last 4/5 days then had McDonalds for lunch today and Ian is feeling ... read more

OMG just had the biggest breakfast ever. It was an all you can eat buffet so I did just that! Don't think I will be eating again today. I did eat again! We had coffee and cake at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise but firstly we took the open chair to the top of the Lake Louise Summit. We got some great pics of the Rockies but we both felt a bit deflated. All the trails at the top were closed due to snow and where they had cleared the snow so you could get to the viewing platform the ground was all muddy. Think we were both missing Grizzly Bear Ranch which has been the highlight of the trip for both of us. Ian reckons we've been spoilt by the places we have been to ... read more

What: Ice Magic Festival Where: Lake Louise, Banff National Park It had been 6 months since we visited Lake Louise. We had stopped on our way back home from previous trips, I think. Ice Magic Festival brings carvers from around the globe(mostly from USA & Canada, sometimes as far as Russia) to Lake Louise. They have 34 hours to create a 7ft wonder with 36 blocks of Ice. The weather is always the trick while visiting Rockies in Winter. Specially, at Lake Louise, the weather is specially favourable for the Victoria Glacier. Prediction of -10C gave me the chills. But we had decided to go, no matter what. G was a little apprehensive about parking. But we reached the Lake at around 10am. There was parking still available at the Lake. Also, this year, the festiva ... read more

Geo: 51.4262, -116.178This was our "Lake Louise" day, and as I had an image in my mind of the iconic lake and its hotel, I was anxious to finally see the place. The drive north, along the more scenic byway, took about an hour, and then we climbed and climbed the mountain, to descend finally toward Lake Louise. The buses of tourists had started to arrive before us and while at times it felt like we were in Tokyo rather than Alberta. Pictures, unfortunately, simply can't adequately convey the beauty of the lake and its location. We all commented on the hotel which, though attractive, was not the "castle-like one" we'd all pictured. We later learned that that particular hotel is back in Banff, and we caught a glimpse of it the following morning. Our plan had ... read more

Wednesday July 6, 2011 Planning and Equipment I now have 3 kick stands on my bike. That is 2 on the bike and 1 for the trailer. The initial kick stand was not holding the weight so well. The bike has not fallen over yet but has come very close a few times. Today has been largely uneventful and restful so I feel I should mention my good fortunes. While I did some research on bike touring at Christmas time I went into all of this with no real experience. That being said, knock on wood (as the saying goes) I don’t think I could have planned, timed or equipped myself much better than I have. I feel my timing has worked perfectly when making my decisions. I could not have started earlier in the year ... read more

Lake Louise. What a gong show. Banff was pretty bad for the "tourist trap" - but nothing compared to pulling into the parking lot of Lake Louise and the assault of tour buses that ensued. We got out of our car, made our way to the waters edge and just stood there dumbfounded at the number of people. And the uh, diversity in the people. Baby strollers. High heels. Dogs in purses. Screaming kids. Seniors with walkers. Large groups of peace signing foreigners. You name it, they were there. Trevor's words exactly: "And... The International Log Jam begins!" We left Banff at 7am and drove to the lake along the Bow Valley Parkway - a "must do" according to our guide book. We would concur. The parkway runs parallel to the main highway, but the speed ... read more

When: 23rd Jan 2011 Where: Lake Louise, Banff National Park Highlights: First Ice sculpture celebration & sleigh ride It has been a while we had been outdoors. If it was not our laziness, it was the weather. All it took was one mention that an Ice Carving competition was happening in Lake Louise to get us moving. Grateful. The festival happened for 3 days & we were watching the weather closely to decide when to go. But, really! What were we thinking. The place is in the middle of the Rockies. It creates its own weather, ALL the time. Still, logistically Sunday proved to be better. I was surprised that after not being outdoors for a good 3 months, we still had it in us to get up early & get going, in spite of our ... read more

We were very fortunate Sunday afternoon. As we drove along the Bow Valley Parkway (the more scenic alternative to Hwy. 1) the sky began to clear. We passed a few interesting points along the way. Among them, a memorial for Germans and Austrians held in the internment camps during the first world war and used as slave labour to build the roads in Canada's first national park and, the Great Divide - the path that marks the Continental divide that separates the watersheds that drain into the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. All along this highway are lookout points where tourists can pull over and photograph the mountains. When the ten peaks appeared in the distance, we watched for an opportunity to stop and take a picture of these huge, snow-covered peaks. Our first view of Lake ... read more

Zondag 5 ... read more
