Rob and I have realised that we are both absolutely shattered. We not only managed to sleep through our alarm, but once we were both up we were still very tired. Having slept through the alarm we decided that we probably wouldn't have enough time to do both of the sights we had planned, so we opted to do the Aya Sofia on the basis it was historically more interesting. We are both desperate for clean clothes so we had to give in and pay for it to be done. We found a hotel that charged per kg but said we could pick the stuff up that evening. Thankful for an opportunity to wash my things I put practically everything in. Silly. I also went down and complained about the dampness in our room and got ... read more

We woke this morning and seeing that it was a sunny day we hastily got ready and headed for the ferry port at the front. Yesterday we asked the hostel owner where we could go to see a more local part of Turkey and he told us about a fishing village we could visit. Diane had recommended a trip down the river so the two recommendations fitted together nicely. Anaddukovegl was the last stop on a ferry that took two and a half hours down the Bosphorus. There was nowhere left to sit as the ferry was full to the brim of that annoying type of tourist. Down the side of the ferry we found a place to stand where we could watch the sights of Istanbul go by. It really is in the most beautiful ... read more

Turkey (23rd Oct - 19th Nov 2007) On the 22nd of October I finished working in Barking (East London) at the Community Rehabilitation Service as did Bern and Elizabeth. It's certainly not ideal having 3 locums running a service! Our working holiday visas were soon to expire. Unfortunately we didn't have any new staff to hand over to which was very disappointing for us but more so for our patients who had no idea when they would be receiving any ongoing therapy. London to Istanbul to Antalya One would think that after all the travel we had done to date that there would be a few crucial things that we wouldn't get wrong! When we flew in to Istanbul we were prepared for a good 6 hour wait until our next flight to Antalya where we ... read more

(not D) The 30-hour train ride from Aleppo clearly did save us time as biking would have taken slightly longer, but it was a bit of a long long long haul. We had a sleeper cabin to ourselves which was pretty good and the scenery of northwest Syria and southern Turkey was pretty amazing. We had a few complications with the Syrian train staff concerning food and money but we got there in the end. What started off as a single-carriage machine from Aleppo (which looked pretty odd) soon turned into a 15 carriage-thing as we cruised through Turkey into Constantinople. Istanbul was all pretty good fun. We decided to opt for the party hostel of the city- which proved to be pretty dead but by the end of it the place had lightened up a ... read more

As luck would have it I’m back in Istanbul, just six short months since the last visit. This time I’m staying up near Taksim Square which is one of the main meeting places in Istanbul.Over the course of a week I'm sure that every one of Istanbul’s 20 million people walk along it at some time. The place is a constant sea of people strolling from one end to the other people watching, window shopping or eating. The flight over was the usual 36 hours from door to door, after a while you just get into the groove of a long flight and make the best of sardine class. The highlight was the brief stop in Zurich where the pilot was kind enough to announce that it was a beautiful day with the temperature 2oC above ... read more

Less than a two hour boat ride from Samos, we arrived in Kusadasi--a cute town full of knockoff shops and affordable restaurants. The meager number of tourists offered us great shopping deals but we used some restraint knowing that istanbul was the true mecca of merchandise. A 2 hour ride to the small town of selcuk sits less than 10 minutes away from the ancient city of ephesus ruled by the romans among other civilizations roughly 2000 years ago. The ruins here paint a vivid picture of what it must have looked like. The massive stone streets and pillars still remain and much more access is available than many sites of ruins we have visited. When we asked why this is..the response was simply "this is turkey, not greece." The Celsus library was impressive along with ... read more

Borders at anytime of the day aren't particularly fun, but when you start going through them at one in the morning and don't finish until four they are rather irritating. Only one positive thing can be said about the ludicrous crossing and that is that we got off the swelteringly hot bus. We stopped for a toilet stop on the Bulgarian side and some people nipped over to the cash and carries. Then once we had been through the Bulgarian border they all went to the duty free shops. We had four different passport checks, one set of visas to buy and a hell of a long time sitting waiting in the bus. We didn't buy anything from the duty frees, but everyone else stocked up big time. Once we finally got through the paperwork and ... read more

Turkey - a long necked, wıde backsıded, ugly bırd wıth a small head that goes 'gobble gobble'. The natıon of the same name ıs gratefully a heck of a lot more exotıc. We left Istanbul early in the morning and took a 5hr bus to Eceabat. A tour guide picked us up and we set off on a PACKAGE TOUR. Kees was over the moon at having reached the highest echalon of travelers. It was a fantastic, and often somber experience. We visited the museum, what amazed me most was all the bullets which they had found which had hit one another in mid air. Can you imagine the intesity of fighting that would be neccessary for this to occur on such a large scale. We walked at ANZAC cove, around Lone Pine. We visited Chunuk Bair where the Kiwis triumphed before handing over to the British who lost the ground again. There were some excellent Turkish memorials as well. We saw Shrapnel Valley and the trenches on ... read more
