Well it's back to the original plan after the little diversion. It was a bit of an Amazing Race sprint to get here though. Wanting to maximise the time in Rome and not overnight in Istanbul I had booked a flight back from Rome that had a little bit of a tight connection time. I had a vague hope that they would be able to check my bag all the way through as I was flying with partner airlines, very distant partner airlines as it turns out. With that plan scrapped it was the mad dash from arrivals through to departures via two lots of immigration. As tends to happen when you're in a hurry, the planets don't always align as good as they should. Turkey being Turkey there will be no going to the front ... read more

When in Roma

After a bit of surfing looking at where I could go for a reasonable amount of euro Rome won out. Having pretty much surrounded it in previous incarnations around Europe now the time was right to drop on in and see what it had to offer. As sad as it sounds, due to an unfortunate set of circumstances I’ve ended up spending a week in Rome. Not having researched it at all before I was having a bit of a stab in the dark as far as where to stay and what to do. That’s where working for Italians comes into play. Stay near Termini they say, it’s close to the Metro and the Metro will get you wherever you need to go. Oh and there’s this great little wine bar if you hang a left ... read more

The annual pilgrimage has started again, although this year there’s a little twist in the tale. Opportunities being what they are, are too good to resist at times so with that in mind I took a little diversion on the way over to chicken this year and dropped in on a couple of friends in Bali on the way. Well if you call flying over them to KL and then traversing from one terminal to another before jumping on the bird again to fly south for the summer dropping in. But it was an enjoyable catch up and a revisit to a place that I’d been to a few too many moons ago. It had changed a fair bit, I’m sure at one stage we were walking down a road that was a dirt track last ... read more

Morocco has been a bit of a surprise, especially after my previous foray to the African continent. They've really got the tourism thing working well here and on a variety of levels. I was half expecting it to be like Egypt with that mixture of dirt, chaos and everyone wanting a part of you from when you clear immigration til the time you're safely back in the metal tube out of there. But it was not to be, firstly you arrive at this amazingly clean and fresh airport followed by a complete lack of taxi drivers/touts hassling you as soon as you walk out of the arrivals. Taking the easy way out I had "organised" a transfer to the riad that I was staying at. It did not go exactly to plan, guys holding up signs ... read more

How good is the Metro

There's one thing that you notice about foreign cities and that's the public transport system. Madrid's is up there with one of the best that I've come across. Although I did take the easy option of going for the three day tourist pass for unlimited travel on the metro or bus all for the princely sum of 12 euro compare that to Sydney's poor effort of costing the same for just a days unlimited travel. The other bonus is that there are little pocket maps of the metro network available at each station. Even without getting one of these, the signage at each station leaves no doubt as to where you are and where you can go from there. So fresh of the plane is was off to the hotel, a short train journey from the ... read more

There I was sitting around in the hotel room taking it easy after a huge day of pack up the day before and there was an almighty crash. Just like a miniskip being dropped from a height, about 20 minutes later I get the phone call - where are you? There's been a bomb go off in Taksim Square and everyone is heading back to the hotel. Taksim Square is about two blocks from where the hotel is which explains the almighty crash and the sounds of more sirens than is normal for this part of town. Even though most of the crew were out roaming the streets, fortunately none were too close to the bang. Not so fortunate for the thirty six people injured by the suicide bomber though. Considering most of us have spent ... read more

Iguazu didn´t disappoint, although it did get off to a slow start with the Devil´s Throat, but after that it all slowly sneaks up on you. Being the fourth one through the gate meant that my plan of an early arrival worked to a tee. Jump the El Practico public bus (5 peso) to Cataratas and get dropped off at the gate the journey out to the falls couldn´t be easier. Pay the 85 peso entry fee and it´s off to the little train that takes you down to where you stroll along the elevated walkway to the Devil´s Throat. Oh and on the way you pass the other elevated walkway that was washed away in 1992, which looks just as substantial as the one that you´re now walking on. Devil's throat is as impressive as ... read more

Well it may be home of the tango but all I´ve been doing is making an absolute gourmet pig of myself. Living on an island of limited choices when it comes to dining selections having more than five choices should be taken as a warning sign. Instead I´ve been trying to consume my bodyweight in lomo (see more spanish, it means tenderloin) and half bottles of red wine (I´m not that silly to attempt full bottles in a foreign country). One would be led to believe that there are other attractions in Buenos Aires apart from the food but I really beg to differ. First night in I did the semi aimless wonder near the hotel with these vague directions to a parilla (bbq steak place) a couple of blocks from where I was staying. Fortunately ... read more

One of the things that I discovered while researching this little sojourn was that Mendoza is the home of Malbec, which I´m fastly learning is one of the finest of South American red wines that you can get. So there´s no surprise that I decided to stop on by to see what all the talk was about. The road from Santiago across the Andes to Mendoza is one of those times that I wish I was driving or riding a motorbike instead of being a passenger in a bus, not that I have a motorbike licence or can ride one with any great finess but you get the picture. The view is amazing, I´m ranking it up there with driving through the Canadian rockies, except with this one you keep going up and up and up ... read more

It's the journey

It's the journey they say not the destination, well in this case the journey has been more of a thrill then the destination. It all started with the escape from that jewel of the Pacific that I call home at the moment. You know it's not going to be the best when you have to be checked in manually as the computers are down at the airport. Those familiar with where I live will find this unsurprising, but after an hour sitting on the tarmac waiting for the paperwork to bear some resemblance to who and what was on the plane it was all starting to wear thin for the flight crew let alone the passengers. But to their credit the flight crew managed it well and eventually saw the funny side of things. The offer ... read more
