Quebec is one of those cities that impresses you from the time you arrive, which is a big call after a journey that's taken 27 hours door to door. Although our arrival in Toronto on the way is equally imprinted in my mind, but that was only because the pilot tried to leave a Zorro mark on the runway as he landed. There's nothing like a left turn, right turn, left turn as you touchdown! But the landing in Quebec was much less spooky. Today was the first time that the rest of the crew got a look at the site [View Full Entry]

How did I end up here? Well I'm still trying to work that out, but it had something to do with arriving at the Airport in Krabi being a little under prepared with nothing booked and next thing I know I'm in taxi heading to Ao Nang with two Swedish girls just of the plane from Sweden. But it turned out to be a good move as Ao Nang has proved to be a good jumping off point to Railey West for a couple of days of kicking back. It seems like half of Sweden is on holidays over here at [View Full Entry]

Did I mention the sunsets
Railey West looking to the south

That's the question that I'm still trying to work out, should I have stayed an extra night or run away when I did? Initial thoughts are that 16 hours is enough but there's that little niggle saying that one more night may have been a good thing to do. Oh well 16 hours it is, as there's a plane to catch in the morning. The coach ride across from Siem Reap was relatively uneventful, well if you consider the constant horn blowing by the driver and the cow that we hit along the way as uneventful. But all was good on [View Full Entry]

Nice use of rocks Asia » Cambodia » North » Angkor
It's a short flight from Saigon across to Cambodia and a whole new world. The main reason for coming this way was to go like the thousands of others and see the Temple Lara Croft made famous, well that and Angkor Wat. When you arrive at the airport you get in line with the rest of the plane to get your Cambodian visa, I'm sure the guy handing back the passports enjoys his job as he seemed to enjoy a little bit of banter with every female. From there you go outside to participate in that great Asian ritual of the [View Full Entry]

A few of the people who also thought that sunrise over Angkor Wat would be a good idea

Wherever you go around here there are a few things you notice, first off being all these people walking around in those zip off trousers that become shorts. Like does anyone ever zip them off and wear them as shorts, no never, it's the look at me I'm the world traveler and I've got this really cool outfit that saves me 100 grams when I pack my backpack, really give me a break. The other great thing you notice is that there's a significant number of people walking the streets with their copy of the Lonely Planet tightly clasped in their [View Full Entry]

The original plan was to come down to Hoi An for a couple of nights and then shoot up to Hue before flying south to HCMC. After landing in Danang, that little place made famous in the American War (as viewed from the Vietnamese side of things) and cruising on down the main road past the massive coastline destruction (I mean development) projects you arrive at Hoi An. It all started out bad when the guy that picked me up from the airport told me that the hotel I'd booked wasn't exactly on the same page as me and didn't have [View Full Entry]

Halong Bay is where just about every tourist that comes anywhere near Hanoi goes to spend a couple of days. With nearly 2 000 islands and turquoise water it would look absolutely amazing if there was sunshine, although the shrouding mist does add somethig to it. After checking out a few of the options offered by the numerous travel agents I opted for the three day/two night package from a mid priced almost reputable crowd. Turned out to be a good choice everything they promised was honoured although the lido deck on the boat was a little off the pace. Fortunately [View Full Entry]

Boat borne dodgem cars is a good way to start a Halong Bay tour.

Well I made it across to Hanoi, not that it was all that challenging really. Get on a plane, plane lands in a new country, wait forever as Customs examine my passport (again, one day someone will tell me what looks dodgey about it) and into the hotel's car with the driver, all too easy. After two nights at my original hotel I've moved down the road to a place that's USD15 cheaper for a few more nights (when you're paying USD40 a night, saving USD15 is not only a bargain but pays for the days food and entertainment). You see [View Full Entry]

Well that's how it started in Luang Prabang, sitting there minding my own business on my balcony overlooking the Mekong and a motorbike cop (straight out of CHIPs this guy was) stops out the front. I noticed that he looked back and took a photo with his mobile phone of the street, being somewhat inquisitive I had a look over the shoulder and coming down the street was a procession of elephants. This is when I said to the guy on the next balcony, ahh excuse me but there's some elephants walking down the street. Turns out he was from Hamburg [View Full Entry]

The rumours were true I've escaped reality again and found my way to the airport for the SEA escape. This time round I've decided rather then fly through Bangkok on the way to Europe, that hanging around in asia could be a good idea, we'll wait and see if it was a good plan or not. I've also decided to make life easy this time and actually book some accomodation before I left home. The other plus of this was that with the good deals going at the moment with accomodation in Bangkok I managed to get three nights in an [View Full Entry]
