We slept as long as we could get away with and left a stupidly small amount of time to wake, pack and get downstairs for breakfast at ten. Breakfast was good again. It never ceases to amaze me how much food Rob can put away first thing in the morning, especially jam and bread. We got the bill and walked into town to post a first batch of postcards and to withdraw money for bills etc. We had been told that whilst the red spring was definitely worth seeing we wouldn't want more than twenty minutes there. Ordinarily we wouldn't waste our time, but it was thundery and getting caught in storms on the travertines didn't sound that appealing, so we opted for the spring. We caught a dolmus there no problem, it was cheap and ... read more

Breakfast here in Pamukkale seems to be a big deal. We had a typical Turkish plate of cucumber, olives, Tomato, grape but all from the hostel garden. The grapes were picked from the vines right above our head. During breakfast we were joined by the owner who chatted to us whilst we ate. We found out that he had voluntarily joined the army and had served on the border with Iraq which is currently experiencing a lot of problems. You have to do military service here but you can choose to join as young as twelve (they don't fight, only join military school.) The army is vitality important here because it acts as a counter balance to the government which is currently slightly religious. Attaturk stated that religion and politics cannot be mixed and most Turkish ... read more

Rob went to breakfast whilst I laid in. When he got back we packed our bags which took a while because we were surprisingly spread out considering how few things we have. We stopped at a shop owned by a friend of Jimmy's. After we bought some postcards we chatted to her for a while about traveling. I told her how I'd love to go to Iran and she listed a load of other places to go instead, all of which we had already been. Once listing all these places to visit she told us we should just go home. We both felt rather well traveled. Until last night we had believed that we have visited St John's basilica in Sirince, but an Aussie staying at Urkmez told us that the basilica ruins were actually in ... read more

Let's begin wıth the positives. If someone had asked me, on leaving Europe, who were the most endearing people we have come across this year, it would be a close contest. The Argentinians came out of the blocks, the Greeks were competitive, Albanian police got a guernsey. The gold medalists for me were gererally the French, particularly while the women who work ın boulangeries maintain that almost ıntangible demeanour I found so engaging. Now, sorry France, it's time to stand aside and hand the yellow shirt over to the Turks. These people extend the welcome mat way above and beyond the call of duty. The food? An absolute treat - baclava desserts delivered on pushbike my personal favourite, gözleme - savoury turkısh pancake, a close second. The sights? Heading south from Selçuk, we first hit a ... read more

Well we woke this morning with the primary intent of phoning the Fenerbahce ticket line to try and book tickets. Jimmy did try but they told him we would have to buy tickets from a club shop somewhere. Jimmy suggested going to Izmir for the day and buying tickets from the club shop there. However, Rob was intent on experiencing Turkish beach and so after some recommendations by Jimmy, we made our way to Millie national park. It took two buses and a considerable amount of time to get there. We were both expecting it to be a lot nearer and a lot easier to get to. We paid our 3ytl each to get in and got off the dolmus slightly worried that the time and expense of getting there would not be worthwhile. We reached ... read more

After a late night and a couple of bad nights sleep in a row I opted to stay in bed whilst Rob went to breakfast. I didn't sleep much but when Rob came back we took our time getting up and ready. Once up, we strolled down the road to see one of the seven ancient wonders of the world. Ok, well it used to be one of the wonders but now all that is left is a pillar and plenty of stones. Anyway we had a look and took the obligatory photos and then climbed up to the top of the site. As we were climbing up, Rob caught sight of a tortoise just walking up the hill to the top of the ruins. We followed it around for a while until it seemed panicked ... read more

The party is over, the show went off as it should of and all was well, so you have to be happy with that! naturally there were some observations that I'll share with you about it. 1. Turkish time, if tradesman back home worked to Turkish time you would get your house built for around $1 000 if they charged by their version of an hour. How come you ask, well when they say that something will arrive in an hour they really mean sometime between one hour and the end of the day, usually the later. 2. There is a valid reason for tug boats having tyres all the way around them. This is because they are the water equivalent to dodgem cars. Having now been on a barge in a few states back home ... read more

We both woke and dressed for breakfast even though Turkish breakfasts seem to leave a lot to be desired. We were both pleasantly surprised with the feast that was laid out in front of us. We sat on the roof terrace with a view of the castle and ate breads, spreads, eggs and fruit. Jimmy the owner of the place told us that his dad could take us on a tour of the sights if we liked. We weren't planning to see Ephesus till tomorrow but this was a one day offer so we took it. Jimmy kept on talking about Visionary house which neither of us had a clue about and it took us a while to figure out that he said Virgin Mary's house. Anyway we paid 10ytl to get in the precinct which ... read more

After being allowed a late checkout we quickly packed and paid for the nights stay. Without consulting a map we set off searching for a quiet place to eat our picnic purchased the day before, after a short walk we realised that Izmir is larger than Liverpool and it wouldn't quite be that easy. A quick look in the guidebook showed that we were heading towards the sea and that it would be a good place to look. The road to the sea was bustling with people and shops; there were many clothes shops selling cheap items all along the road. Every so often there were little trains whizzing round plastic tracks at little stalls selling this and that. Izmir seems to have embraced the sandwich more than other Turkish towns with regular shops and vendors ... read more

I got in at 4.30pm and went straight to Bodrum Backpackers, where I met Ria (kiwi chick) and Pascal (from manly). We went out for dinner along the beach. A massive steak from 1st stop, $20 for a glass of wine, entrée and monster sizzling steak. An early night for me coz I’m planning a day of photography tomorrow. Tarik gave me some tips on where to go for photos, he’s a budding photographer too and works at the hostel. It’s a gorgeous day, the sun is out and reflecting on the turquoise water. The boats are all in the harbour with their flags flying and everyone is looking relaxed. I headed straight to the Castle of St Peter. Built in 1402, it’s so impressive and even has a museum of underwater archaeology within, housing finds ... read more
