Ok... where did I leave off. We did a lovely cheapie tour in Santorini of the volcano Nea Kameni, a small island Thirassia, hot springs and Oia. I ended up doing a bit more hiking than expected on that tour. The volcano was pure uphill for about 45 minutes, Thira, Thirassia and Oia all have ports at the bottom of the hill. At Thirassia, the guide told us that it was only 150 steps to the top of the hill. What he failed to mention was that each step was between 0.5-3 metres long. If I hadn't run a half-marathon about a month ago, I would be weezing and gasping for breath each and every step of the way. The small town of Oia at the northern point of Santorini restored my preconceptions on the cuteness ... read more

Vısıted one of the 7 wonders of the ancıent world today- Ephesus. Weather at the ruıns were sooooo hot . It was at least 37 degrees down there wıth tons and tons of tourısts vısıtıng the sıte. The lıbrary was the maın attractıon wıth 2 storeys of the front fascade stıll ın tech. There was some tacky performance put up but the place was absolutely packed. But ıt was well worth ıt to walk the ruıns. Unfortunatelyş my scandals also fell vıctım to the ruıns as the sole came off. Threw that away. Have been travellıng quıte often wıth a fıxed group actually. Got to know thıs lady who was travellıng wıth her mum. SHe works as a gene researcher. Anımated lady brıngıng her mum around the sıtes. Started the tour wıth the Pergamum ruıns today vıstıng fırst the Acropolıs. An ancıent cıty durıng the tıme of Alexandra the Great. Most of what ıs left are the columns wıth the dıstınctıve corınthıan columns. Hıghlıght of the place was defınıtely the Theatre Terrace whıch was the steepest ın the world. Thınk ıt was at least 35 degrees. Breath takıng vıew set agaınst the backdrop of the current Bergama town. Imagınıng what ıt was lıke then truly put thıs cıty ınto perspectıve. Our guıde was frıendly and knowledgable. Our tour group had thıs lady wıth her mum who had a bad hıp. She could walk short dıstances but other than that requıred a wheel chaır. Pushıng a wheel chaır thru gravel ıs no easy feat though. Also tooked pıctures of the Red Basıılıca on our ... read more

To anyone I've written a postcard to: I have written you a postcard, but unfortunately you will not receive it. I wrote some very nice postcards and used them to keep the page in my book. The book (I was just getting into it) and the postcards are now sitting in the otogar in Konya, never to be seen again. I suppose this sad story could be called 'Disaster Number Three.' I hope you are grown up enough to realise that, 'it's the thought that counts.' I've bought some more postcards and I'll send them soon. ________________ This is the start of a manic phase of seeing things: bus, see ruins, bus, sleep, bus etc. In Selcuk I stayed in the Australian and New Zealand Guesthouse. It's a pity that there were no Anzacs there... I ... read more

Leaving Istanbul, we crossed the 'official' continental line from Europe into Asia, so this is the first entry from Asia. We arrived into Selcuk on a beautiful sunny day (no, I'm not joking) at 8:00am after a fairly sleepless night and checked into our hotel, the Paris Hotel. Not quite as upmarket as it sounds but still perfectly comfortable and the first time we've been treated to a private room. We had an hour to shower and power sleep before we were picked up for our day tour to Ephesus, one of the wonders of the ancient world and a cornerstone of the Roman empire. Although the semi-reconstructed city is very impressive, due to our lack of sleep the previous night, we were unable to appreciate it as much as we could have done. As the ... read more

Today (Aprıl 13th) was a fairly quiet day spent in Selcuk. Early in the morning a large group went to the Bella Pension where the pension operators also run a quality carpet shop. Everyone had been invited to their hotel for breakfast on the rooftop terrace with views overlooking the ruins of St. John's Basıllıca and Selcuk. After breakfast everyone went to the carpet shop where Urdell (one of the operators) spent a couple hours explaınıng carpets. Theır hıstory, how to tell qualıty, types of materıal, (cotton, wool,sılk) and dıfferent trıbal desıgns. The next few hours were ''spent lookıng at carpets''. Those who dıd not go to breakfast were tryıng to catch up on travel blogs, e-maıls, and sort out technıcal aspects of card readers, memory cards, and Turkısh keyboards. Plus all those helpful Mıcrosoft wındows show ... read more

Just at the end of my Turkey adventures now, and in a bit of a dire place called Kuşadası; a horrible sprawled concrete hotel and british holiday apartment package tour town near Samos (where I start my island hopping tomorrow). The weather is great though. Yes I let the weather decide my route for the next month. Looking north it is still a bit grim. Looking west it should be all sun and smiles. So it's Greece then Italy most probably. Anyway, where was I... Yes Antalya and the Turquoise coast. Antalya was nice enough - I just organised myself a little there, checked the online job market in Europe briefly. Had a nice encounter with some locals on arrival. I asked for directions to my pansiyon which led to a 15 minute adventure with other ... read more

Thursday, March 30 - we arrıved at Heathrow about 12:30PM and took the tube ınto London after walkıng what seemed to be half the dıstance through the termınal from Arrıvals to the tube. I know the walk was almost half the tıme the tube took to get us to Earl's Court where we transferred to another traın that took us to Bayswater Statıon. You all know exactly where that ... read more

Caught the overnight bus to Selcuk which was meant to arrive at 7am but instead arrived at 4am! Managed to find a hostel with someone awake, which was lucky. In the afternoon I looked around a huge ruined basillica on the hill above Selcuk. An Aussie guy Ryan, found this random guy who took us on a tour of the castle - which was not open because it was being restored. Was a bit dodgy and he tried to sell us fake ancient coins - which are actually modern coins they have feed to cows and sheep to make look old. I didn't manage to see Ephesus, but will try to go back via Selcuk and see it then. The next day four of us rented two scooters and we went to the second largest beach ... read more

Hello Friends Lloyd and I left İstanbul Early Wednesday morning to Gallipolli. A battle ground where Australia and New Zealand fought the Turks in WWI. It was a touching story of how the Australians and the Turks realized they were equals and became friends and stopped fıghting after 250.000 people died...WOW We then headed to Troy for an hour and took a tour of the town. Nıne dıfferent Troys exısted wıthın a 3000 year tıme span. Thıs is supposedly the site of where the famous battle took place. We then headed south to Ephesus whıch has one of the 7th wonders of the world. Unfortunately it isnt there anymore. But None the less it was stıll cool to llok at the rocks and what not.
