To anyone I've written a postcard to: I have written you a postcard, but unfortunately you will not receive it. I wrote some very nice postcards and used them to keep the page in my book. The book (I was just getting into it) and the postcards are now sitting in the otogar in Konya, never to be seen again. I suppose this sad story could be called 'Disaster Number Three.' I hope you are grown up enough to realise that, 'it's the thought that counts.' I've bought some more postcards and I'll send them soon. ________________ This is the start of a manic phase of seeing things: bus, see ruins, bus, sleep, bus etc. In Selcuk I stayed in the Australian and New Zealand Guesthouse. It's a pity that there were no Anzacs there... I ... read more

In Fethiye I looked at a couple of pensiyons and settled on Monica's Place (Ferah's). One of the best places I've stayed in so far - very friendly and great people. The dorm on the top floor has an amazing view over the harbour. On my first day in Fethiye I decided to walk through the abandoned Ottoman Christian village of Kayakoy to Oludeniz. Supposedly this village was Louis de Bernieres' inspiration for 'Birds Without Wings.' It was a pretty eerie place, with thousands of abandoned buildings. I must say, however, that I think that the Romans made much better job of building houses than the Christians. Most of the rooves had gone and the walls were falling down. Hardly anyone was wandering round - just a couple of kids kicking a ball up one of ... read more

So the flames at Olympos were pretty amazing - we got up there fairy late in the evening and spent a couple of hours there and met some turkish people who shared their Turkish delight. Left about 1am and got back about 3 so the next day was a perfect opportunity for a bit of leisure time. Whilst in Olympos I lost a flip-flop. I met a nice Frenchman called Julien on the beach and on the way back to the village I was absent-mindedly talking to him about the year he's spending studying in Beirut when we came across a stream feeding the river. He sensibly walked across the bridge and I walked straight through - not a problem, you may think. In the middle of the stream, (it was at least two feet wide) ... read more

Intro I thought I'd better say a few things about Turkey before I give a blow by blow account as I'm starting to get a feel for the place. I'm acutely aware that my very few blog entries so far have been quite dry, lacking the amusing anecdotes that make a good and readable story. I see little reason to change, however, because I'd first like to tell you where I've been. After that (or even before) I will be thoroughly sick of this keyboard and retire to bed. Turkey has always been, of course, the country where East Meets West. The bus system is fantastic - you can turn up at any town's Otogar (bus station) and, more than likely, there will be a bus just about to leave for where you want to go. ... read more

... started at Stansted airport in a Thompson Tours plane to Turkey and ended at Antalya airport. They all got on a bıg bus heading East to the resorts and I got a bus into Antalya's old town (Kaleıci) to find somewhere to stay. A met a German who was going to Bodrum to go sailıng wıth some friends. I dropped my bag at Pensiyon Sabah and we went for a couple of beers. I had a wander around the Roman (but still used) port and then Hadrian's Gate and the Clock Tower. Pictures to follow. This place ısn't well set up for cameras and is really slow. On Wednesday I went on a tour to the Roman ruins at Perge and then Aspendos. Perge was very impressıve but quite ruined. I'll try not to go ... read more

April 14th 2006

This is only the briefest of outlines, I hope to have some time soon to update this. At the moment it's a bit of a rush to get packed to go off to Turkey while I'm not trying and failing to pull dead lambs out of sheep or trying to save the life of a snotty calf without a mother. Happy Easter, by the way. There weren't any direct buses at the time I wanted from Larache to Meknes, so I thought I'd go to Rabat, see a couple of museums and get onto a bus in time to find somewhere to stay in Meknes. Safe plan, but the bus station was out of town so I didn't get to see any of Rabat and the bus from Rabat to Meknes was quite an experience. One ... read more

Click on the links for more pictures than there are in the blog Although it might be the 'European' part of Africa. This blog is written in some quite serious retrospect and it's really just an excuse to show you some photos and tell you where I've been. I've written my own diary, but it's mine and I don't want to type it all up now. Call me selfish... The Crossing etc. I went to the pretty surfing town of Tarifa to cross over to Tangier. It was closer than Algeciras and, so I hear, a much pleasanter town. The fast ferry takes 35 minutes to cross, but unfortunately we had to wait an hour outside Tangier to get a berth. It was a seemingly calm crossing until we met a very odd topsy turvy sea ... read more

March 23rd 2006

Introduction Due to frustration with the American Embassy, i booked flights on Tuesday and flew to Seville on Thursday to spend a couple of days with my cousin Sophie before heading over to Morocco for 10 days. It was really nice to be able to just sticks and leave without any firm plans. I didn't take many pictures in Seville, partly because it preys on my pride to lower myself to the level of the fat American happy snapping tourists. I suppose that the other excuse I have is that I was enjoying wandering around so much that I didn't want to have to worry about what make a good photo, stopping, snapping and disturbing the easy flow of life in Southern Spain. Enough... Getting there I flew from Stansted and arrived in Seville a bit ... read more
