Last night we had a nice Shabbat meal of fish and vegetables bought at the local market. The fish was a red trout from Gallilee and a sea breem from Eliat, near Egypt, both wild caught. Susan went for a walk and found she could easily walk to the Jaffa gate in only 15 minutes from the apt., she went by herself, I stayed home and took a nap before starting dinner. Our visit to the Shrine of the Book was interesting. They have an ancient portion of the book of Isaiah on display as well as artifacts dating back to the temple period. Today we are resting according to the tradition of Shabbat or Sabbath which is observed from sundown on Fridays to sundown on Saturday. Since almost no public transportation or private cars operate ... read more

Shalom from Jerusalem!! We had a long day yesterday. After light breakfast we set out to the old city. It took us a while since we were not familiar with the bus routes and all but made it to the Jaffa Gate entrance eventually. It was around noon and I wanted to be able to call home and let you know to log on the www.thekotel.org so you could see and hear us, but we have yet to figure out how to call out with our cel phones. Each time we try we get some recorded message in Hebrew that we cannot understand, so be patient, when we learn what that message is we might be able to call next time. Visiting the old city was really interesting, it was quite hot and humid (I thought Israel ... read more

Hi Everyone, I am sorry it took me so long to get a proper post up, but I have not had more than a few minutes at a computer and wanted to try and at least do some justice to my experience here in Israel. This may be a bit of a long entry as I have so much to share. I will warn you right now, there is NO WAY I can come close to doing justice to this trip. But here goes: I really didn't know what to expect when I signed up for Taglit (Birthright Israel). Despite the fact that I was being offered a completely free 10-day trip to Israel and had heard so many great things about the program, I was actually extremely apprehensive about it. Not only did the idea ... read more

Hello, Shalom, Salam, Bonjour! Besides being on crutches which is not so much fun in my life, I tend to keep myself busy with writing. Not that you would actually know that from my horrible habit of not uploading new blogs, but rest assured, I do write on a fairly consistent basis. Now, because of my injury, that seems like all I have time to do! :) and :( Anyhow, one of my newest writing endeavors involves writing for Instablogs which is a concept based out of India where many bloggers or "Citizen Journalists" come together and report on different news items in the world. The tagline is that Everyone has an opinion. Now if that isn't the place for me and my writing, then I don't know where it is. Which speaking of, I love ... read more

Hi, everyone!! Hope this note finds you all well and enjoying the summer. It feels strange for me not to be thinking about the upcoming holiday as I would usually do - have something to do with it not really being celebrated here?? Anyway, enjoy the long weekend and be safe... Tuesday June 24, 2008 I think today’s theme is “lost.” No, not the TV series, but the way this day turned out in so many ways. At the peshat (Hebrew for “surface”) level, I got lost several times roaming the streets. And this time, I wasn’t happy about doing so! Put me in the Old City and I’m happy to get lost, but not where I went today. I decided to check out the ultra-Orthodox neighborhood of Mea Shearim where one is transposed back in ... read more

Hi Everyone! I'm sorry I have not been able to update the blog yet. This is literally my first time sitting down at a computer since I have arrived. I won't have time to write a full entry until tonight, however, I wanted to say a quick hello. My experience in Israel thus far has been truly life changing. This place is more beautiful than I could have ever imagined and so rich in colorful history. I can't wait to share more with you, but for now, I just wanted to let you know that I am healthy, happy, and safe. I miss and love you all very much. ... read more

Over the past few days, we have visited the Old Port of Jaffa/Tel Aviv, done some swimming in the warm, clean waters of the Mediterranean Sea and learned the pitfalls of asking for directions on the streets of Israel's major cities. We also visited with some friends in Nes Ziona, the Himmelhoch's. They welcomed us with a grand feast of meat, vegetables and fruit. David really liked the cake. The children and grandchildren were there as well and got to speak the "universal language" of video games with Micah, Jonah and David. Today, would took a very informative driving tour around western Jerusalem. We went to Yad Vashem and got some very moving description of the sculptures and some of the accessible exhibits. David is too young to go into the historical section with the more ... read more

So...funny story. Yesterday I was walking towards home in a semi-happy daze after going to a job interview (probably won't get the job but I had fun in the interview anyways!) I then see a fire truck passing by, which always confirms to me that because I focus a lot of my energy on the FD, this is why I see it everywhere. I'm walking along and these 2 children ask me to help them get their basketball down from the rooftop where it got stuck by throwing a rock at it. I say Sure why not (this was my 1st mistake) and I throw the rock (2nd mistake). It gets stuck right on the edge of the roof, so I climb up on the small fence - we're talking about 2 feet here - no ... read more
