Shalom! So much has happened here in the past week or so its hard to remember it all. I haven't been able to find the time or the internet connection to sit down and write so here's a short blurb. I'm currently in Jerusalem with a few days left. I know 7 letters of the Hebrew Aleph Bet and about 5 words/phrases. I have been rapelling off a cliff in the Negev Desert. I've seen the Arab controlled Jericho from a mountain in the Judean Desert. I've been to Tel Aviv, shopped in Shuks, bartered with crazy shop owners, been asked what language I was speaking (It's hard to imagine someone not recognizing English, but alas, my Americanized self can't believe it!), made friends with some nice Jews, learned more about my Jewishness, fallen in love ... read more

Well, we made it safely to Jerusalem. First, the Ben Gurion airport is stunning. There is a beautiful water sculpture in the middle of the lobby. The drive by Sharout to Jerusalem was a bit of an eye opener. We travelled with some Israeli's and they pointed out the various check points and the narrow corridor of undisputed land that links Tel Aviv to Jerusalem (basically, just the highway). The large wall separating Palestinian settlements from Isreal comes right up to the road at times. We are staying at Allenby #2, right near the central bus station. It is a very warm place to stay. The owner, Dani, is a great host and others staying here are from Guam, the Netherlands and New Jersey. A map on the wall shows where people have come from all ... read more

Saturday 6/21/08 To airport at 6:15 (thank you Susan!). Everything smooth through security. Flight is 1½ hrs late. I really don’t think things happen by chance - since the flight was delayed, I decided to splurge for breakfast. Good way to start the day, after all. And then I promptly spilled a full cup of coffee into my lap. Explicatives abounded, I’m afraid to say. Those who know me know that I can get a potty mouth when faced with frustrating situations, which of course this was one of those! Thankfully, I have a change of clothes with my carry-on because, again, no coincidence, it was suggested I take some in case I don’t connect with my luggage for a few days once in Israel. So, I changed in the bathroom and got the coffee out ... read more

I have now been in Jerusalem for four days and its been a strange experience. It's nice being with Carly and Derek. Most of the people are great and the Rabbis are nice, friendly and open to question and doubt. My two roommates at Kibbutz Lavi, Heather and Amanda, are lovely and entertaining people. Day 1: This turned into Day 2 with 30 hours of traveling for everyone and probably a total of 4 hours sleep for me. It was a very, very difficult, long and tiring day of travel. It made me realize what I was really getting into. This is hardcore study of Judaism. After 14 hours on a plane, the time in layover, check in, check out, customs, waiting for buses, traveling on buses and then activities to 'introduce and unite', we definitely ... read more

Today was our first full day in Israel. We both slept well, however Carly's cot folded in half on her when she went to lie down to sleep. Unfortunately both of her roommates were already sleeping when she went to bed and couldn't fix the bed. She tried but to no avail. The next day Derek attempted but to no avail. By the end of the day we had a new cot put in the room. Hopefully she will have a more peaceful sleep tonight. We woke up early to an amazing extravagant breakfast. Derek's favorite breakfast items were the pickles and chocolate pudding (not together though). Carly's favorite was the smoked white fish and cheese. We all got onto the bus and headed twords Tsfat. We were soaking in the mountainous scenery from the lower ... read more

I've spent the last week doing plenty of sightseeing in Israel. On Sunday, Ortal (a friend of Yuda's) took us to the Golan Heights. ...you may have heard of it because it is an area (orignially of Syria) that has been occupied by Israel since the Six Day War in 1967. It is a plateau in the northeast of Israel, bordering of Lebanon, Jordan and Syria (and from a distance I saw each of these countries). Now I've been there I can see what the fuss is about. It's a lovely place, with great views over Israel (this could be why Israel hasn't given it back... Syria could easily fire rockets down the hill at Israel... and apparently they did). In the Golan, we went to Gamla nature reserve, which has a pretty decent waterfall in ... read more

Shalom! (Peace!) I am sorry that it has taken me so long to write, but I have been busy, busy, busy! My time in the Czech Republic has ended and I made it home safely. I am now on my second big adventure in Israel! I have been here for a little over a week already and have already seen some fabulous sites. I will post pictures shortly and will describe my last days in Brno as soon as I can! ... read more

It was a sick twist of fate that my first day of kitchen duty came just a few hours after Pub Night. Pub Night, here at kibbutz Baram, is taken very seriously. The pub is open Tuesday and Friday nights and is one of few organized social activities offered to both members and volunteers. Unless you're banned from the pub for missing your pub cleaning duty, everyone shows up for Pub Night. And though I wanted to be fresh and ready for my 5:45am kitchen call, I knew that if I missed out on my first Pub Night, I risked being socially ex-communicated. I managed to stay for only one beer, but as the Pub doesn't open until 10pm, I was out later than I would have liked. I did have the good sense to leave ... read more
