I ate breakfast with Francis this morning and then she left. I took my time because my train didn’t leave until 9:55. I didn’t see Alex at all this morning so I left without saying goodbye. I returned my key card and headed to the rail station. When I got there, I waited for my train to Edinburgh. Most of the seats on the train were reserved, so I had to sit with this girl. It took about 2 and a half hours to get from York to Edinburgh. Once I got there I tried to find my hostel. It wasn’t very far at all, but I had to go uphill with my suitcase. Since I arrived too early at the High Street Hostel, I left my luggage there and decided to catch a train to ... read more

We woke up early to get to the bus tour that we would be embarking on that day. We arrived to our pick-up site completely opposite to regular van der Veen fashion, early! Our guide, a very small eccentric storyteller, greeted us in-front of a bar located in a quaint part of old Edinburgh. The 9-hour trip took us through some of the attractions of Southern Scotland. Our first stop was Stirling castle. Most interesting was the view of the Wallace Monument and the real story of William Wallace, told to us by the bus driver / guide. The next stop was Loch Lomond in the Trossachs. Our tour guide, with his wealth of information and terrific flair for story telling, told us the story of why Lakes are called lochs in Scotland. Loch Lomond was ... read more

It’s the end. And I am not ready. I’m currently on my second flight of the day, on my way back to Canada for the summer. It’s been a while, and I have some time to kill. So here is what I’ve been up to for the past four months. Wow. It’s really been a while. I’ve done and seen so much, it’s unbelievable. Highlights (some of which get their own posts): I saw Josh (face to face, not via internet), Saw Auntie Di and co, Mum came to visit with Ellie. It was awesome. I also did exams. Less awesome. I would like to focus, if I could, on a much more recent event. Namely the reason I am so fully unprepared to return. On the Monday before I was due to leave, ... read more

On the road by about 9.30am hardly been going for 30 minutes and then suddenly the Scotland/England border appears - even though I knew it was hereabouts, it still came upon me as a surprise and I was ecstatic. It is just amazing how when you link up all the points how far you can you go. I was really pleased I got into Scotland- and Scotland did not disappoint. The first few miles felt different more wild and amazing. A stream followed me for the first 5 to 10 miles and it was all lovely. Weather again very good and warm. There was a lot of miles to be done today though to get into Edinburgh (still hard to fathom St Ives - Edinburgh amazing!) so whilst I tried to get some smaller less busy ... read more

I'm in Scotland! Well, I have been for a few days already. But would you believe Wifi access has been spotty in the middle of the Scottish Highlands? Crazy. Anyway, we left Ballintoy and Northern Ireland behind and hopped a ferry to Scotland. We stayed in Glasgow for a few days. It's a big city, just like jacksonville but with much prettier buildings and better nightlife. Like most of the cities I've stayed in on this trip, business and industry is woven into the same beautiful architecture as the tiny street cafés and boutiques. It's a great mixed setting that I could one day see myself thriving in as an entrepreneur. I got a chance to tour the magnificent St. Mungo Cathedral and the Glasgow necropolis. The measures that have been taken to preserve these beautiful ... read more

For three days, I went to London to visit my Auntie Di and her two kids, Emilie and Olivia, who were visiting the capitol for a while. I took a ridiculously long bus from Edinburgh that left at 5:30. IN THE MORNING. Oh, the humanity. Anyway, I dragged my lazy butt outta bed and moseyed on down to the bus station and boarded a bus with the most hidden toilet ever in the history of buses. For the first six hours, I had no idea there was even a toilet. Lemme tell you, nothing makes you need to pee more than thinking you have no place to do it. When I felt my choices were to either pee out the window (a lá Rat Race) or man up and ask the bus driver if there was ... read more

We have wanted to visit to Scotland the whole time we have been in the UK, but winter is not the best time for it. We have very good friends that live in Scotland and we had been in hopes of getting up there to visit them, but they wisely advised us we should push it as late in the spring as possible. We were torn with what to do. Bob still had some dental appointments and we wanted to book our train tickets, they are much less expensive if you book them ahead. We had a choice — should we book for the free time we know for sure we had between dental appointments OR take a chance and book a train from the next place we were going to be, Chatham, without knowing for ... read more

So Josh came to visit in March for break. I picked him up from the airport (complete with a vaguely insulting sign and soppy hugs) and brought him home, where he proceeded to collapse and sleep. Which was good for him, but boring for me because he got here on my friend’s birthday and we had plans to play board games all day. Which we did, but I had assured everyone I know that my little brother was both real and super into board games. So his sleeping delayed my ability to prove that I actually had family. Anyway, the minute he was awake and functional, I threw him at my friends and demanded that they all get along. In hindsight, that was probably a mite intimidating. Oops. He dealt with it rather well. He even ... read more

I am currently sitting on a plane, desperately and painfully trying to pressurize my left ear. It makes a squeaking noise before painful remaining at the same painful pressure level. It’s aggravating, but hopefully not fatal. I’ll keep you updated. Yeah, it has done nothing. Several hours, one airport, a taxi ride, and an unfortunate reunion later, it still hurts. I’m deaf in one ear. Oh great. Three days. Limited change. I’m going to the doctor. I was prescribed some antibiotics and I’m on the mend now. That was hell. So this blog has been weeks in the making, and I have many decent stories to tell. I mean, not right now, because I have an essay due in two days and this is just procrastination, but you won’t really know. I have another essay due ... read more

Geo: 55.9503, -3.18761Today we decided to go for a visit to Holyrood Palace which is located on the bottom of the Royal Mile, so we set off downhill passing many amazing scenes along the way. We bought our tickets and entered the palace, unfortunately you cannot take photos inside, so could only take a few of the areas outside. The Palace was huge, lots of huge painting on the walls and alot of history,it's amazing to think this is where the Queen and her family come and stay when they are in Edinburgh. After leaving the building, we went and saw the ruins from a fire many years ago. Outside the sun was shining, and on the lawns within the Palace gardens, there were squirrels running around munching on the grass! We finished on our tour ... read more
