Hi Everyone, This past weekend was Edinburgh, Scotland. Haggis - Scotch - Deep Fried Mars Bars - Iron Bru Scotland is truely a wonderful place for people who don't care about heart disease. Otherwise, it's a nice place to visit. I wouldn't recommend making a trip solely out of Edinburgh. Renting a car and putzing around the Highlands would be much more fulfilling. Cheers, Joel... read more

Today our two main goals are a free walking tour of Edinburgh and possibly a tour of Edinburgh Castle. After a short but fairly decent night's sleep, we woke up around 8am, and after a confusing shower, we headed out to join a free walking tour that started in front of Starbucks at 10am. Okay, the confusing part of the shower was figuring out where to put what while taking a shower in a mini-shower, and not parading around naked, since it was a co-ed bathroom. Now, back to the tour. The tour is offered by Sandeman's New Europe and is free because the guides work only for tips. Supposedly, that makes them work harder to earn your tip. Our guide, David Maitland, was from the Highlands of Scotland, had a definite Scottish accent, but was ... read more

Well, first of all, we made it to Edinburgh Scotland, tired, but in one piece. We left Pensacola around 11am, had a quick flight to Charlotte North Carolina, and made it to our departure gate for over 5 hours before our scheduled departure time of 6:10. Unfortunately, there was a problem with our plane that was coming from Dublin, and we didn't board until after 8pm. Somehow, the pilot made up most of the time lost and we arrived in Dublin around 7am or so, Friday (5 hour time difference and 6 hour flight). We got our passports stamped and went looking for our RyanAir departure gate for the leg to Edinburgh. Since we'd arrived at Terminal 2 on American Airlines (US Airways), we had to walk to Terminal 1 before we could get any information ... read more

Pandas, koalas and dinosaurs - those were my goals of the day and I did not fail, because Glyn and I went to Edinburgh zoo. We took the bus as Saul had warned us that parking was stupidly expensive and places not always guaranteed. We were super lucky in that we were able to see the very elusive female panda because her bed was being cleaned and she was stuck outside getting annoyed. As soon as she could, she was off and glad to see the back of us. By complete contrast, the male panda was totally laid back, lounging in a large tub, chowing down on bamboo. It was impressive how quickly he stripped down that bamboo, but given that this is all he does, he should be pretty deft at it. The koalas were ... read more

It was my grand idea to leave for Edinburgh at 6am so we could fit in as much as possible. I let Glyn drive first and promptly fell back asleep, you would think I'd planned it... After a 4.5 hour journey, we arrived in Stockbridge, Edinburgh. We were to be staying with Saul, Helen and baby Maisie in their flat for a couple of days. I'd briefly met Saul at a Ministry gig many years ago and he didn't even remember meeting me! However, we have conversed online for many years on Ministry related forums. After meeting Helen and Maisie (the cutest baby in the world), we all walked the short distance up the cobbled streets into the centre of Edinburgh. Saul works in the tourism industry so was able to very kindly sort us free ... read more

Today's our day for exploring around Edinburgh. It has been clear skies, but cold. The hop-on-hop-off bus systems in these cities are fantastic, we used it today to get a good overview of the city getting out past the botanic gardens and down to the port in Leith. Did you know they have the tallest palm tree in the world growing here? imagine that a tropical plant in this place. Did you know they also have the tallest greenhouse... We found a real gem in the National Museum of Scotland, a beautiful collection of buildings and amazing collection of natural history and Scottish history. I've always marveled at the number of inventions and scientific breakthroughs the Scots have made, and they are all here in the museum. However, the most amazing feature of this museum is ... read more

After our four days in London, Mom and I made our way by train to Edinburgh. After riding the train for four hours, it was nice to get up and walk a bit. Little did Mom and I realize what laid in store for us. Packing all of our luggage, we had to climb steep stairs and walk long hills to get to where we were staying. We finally arrived to our apartment, exhausted and realizing how out of shape we were. After dropping everything off, we headed out for a walk around the medieval old city. The architecture in the city is amazing and makes you feel like you are walking back in time. We made our way to the castle and looked around the outside before making our way down the Royal Mile and ... read more

28 Dec We hoped a train to Leeds early on the morning of 28 Dec. I'd not been to Leeds before so was looking forward to exploring another great city. We arrived early morning and caught up with more of Ju's friends - Tracey and Anna. After a great local lunch we went to an American bar with pool and ping pong tables... I was seriously outnumber by the girls on the ping pong table.... we got so good we were playing the ball off the wood floor and brick walls. Three hours passed quickly and it was time to meet up with Amy. We met Amy back at the train station and drove 15 minutes out of town to Amy's place. While Amy prepared a brilliant dinner I had a good visit with John and ... read more

Geo: 55.9503, -3.18761We had originally planned on bringing in the New Year in Prague but then we found out that Easy Jet offered a $50 direct plane ride to Edinburgh Scotland. Why was this significant? Edinburgh is consistently ranked as one of the top places to be in the world when bringing in the New Year. The blindingly obvious thing we overlooked was the notion that we were no longer twenty-somethings who enthusiastically strive for an alcohol induced coma crowded together with thousands of their new friends.New Years Eve is so big in Edinburgh that they give it it's own name, Hogmanay, and they extend the celebration for 3 consecutive days. The roots of Hogmanay, although a little uncertain, perhaps reach back to the celebration of the winter solstice among the Norse (and this invites a ... read more
