More of London Europe » United Kingdom » England » London By Roebbelen FamilyJune 28th 2007Roebbelen Family Julia was feeling sick again today, so sadly we had to head off to London without her. It was not the same without our 4th, but we had a good day nonetheless. We visited the Tower of London and went on a guided tour to start off. We were amazed to be standing in buildings that date back to the 11th century- it's really hard to get your mind around. We saw the Crown Jewels (more that's really hard to comprehend) and the various armouries. After the Tower we walked a... read more

Today we took a bunch of jumbled up trains from Portsmouth and eventually wound up in Salisbury where we caught a bus to Stonehenge. Stonehenge was very interesting and while you can't get right up to the stones you can certainly get close enough to see them quite well. I took tons of pictures and it was all very good. They have a free audio tour which came with admission and told us all kinds of neat information. Definitely worth the hassle and expense of getting here. Onwards from Salisbury back to London we went. A long, expensive, tiring process. Eventually, however, we made it back to Dan's house and sleep came quickly. ~ Dan... read more

Lately we've been pretty chill. There has been alot of rain. Which makes for pretty miserable travelling/siteseeing conditions. Cold too--the weather keeps acting like April. I keep waiting for the summer to start and last night had the harsh realization that summer has started!! The weather just isn't cooperating. We have had major flooding the last couple of days. Tuesday was particularly bad. The river here in Scotter (we call it the duck pond) flooded. Some people in this region of the country are still flooded and homeless. Most of that is an hour SW of us. There is a damn that is about to burst too and there is still more rain in the forecast. We're still hoping for the best--the sun has to come out sometime! A couple of weeks ago another one ... read more

So I leave in about 36 hours, but before I do my final journey about England, here are the past few days... So on Sunday, people didnt get up till really late. It was like 330 before I saw more than just Christian and Kobi for a minute. Once people had gotten up, Chris and I went to Tesco and I went tanning. When we came back, I made some lunch, and from there on out Im pretty sure we all just chilled and watched Arrested Development. We must have watched about 3 hours worth, so that we finished the first season of about 22 episodes in 2 days, CRAZY. Anyways, I think from there on out we all just hung out and played tennis and whatnot. We tried to figure out what we were gonna ... read more

Untitled Today I'm off to Tent State Faslane. Before I go, I thought I really should recap. HIGHLIGHTS the people the people i live with are exceptionally excellent. they are mostly all artists, and it is amazing the amount of art making that goes on in this house on a daily basis. when i'm not running around trying to do anything and everything (sounds familiar ay) there are always people around doing very low key things that i find are a nice change. it's going to be tough to leave this lot, i can already tell. edinburgh so this lovely lil lot all get together and do this event called What They Could Do They Did (WTCDTD), which is a multi media arts event with visual and performance art of all kinds, made by them. The ... read more

Well, after making my way out of Rome, which turned out ot be as easy as I thought, but a much longer train ride than planned I arrived in Pisa. I was able to get in in the early afternoon so I took the rest of the day to head across town and find the tower. Pisa doesnt have all that much to offer, not that its not a nice city, just mostly the major touristy areas. After taking in what is one of the largest churches Ive ever seen, and a giant building that was a good 7 stories high and taking up probably about half a baseball field that was used soley for babtisms I took the regular pictures with the tower. Pushing it, holding it, standing in front of it (by the way ... read more

Today we went to the Tate Britain to see an exhibit called How We Are Photographing Britain. It was all about Photography through the years in Britain (obviously). It was absolutely incredible, I spent 2.5 hours in there and I didnt even realize it. Usually I get bored in museums but this exhibit alone held my attention and blew me away. It was crazy to see how photography has changed and improved from the beginning. After seeing the exhibit Bill, Alec, B-Town, Ellen, Meg, Mary Rose and I went through the rest of the museum (kind of in a rush). This museum is huge and we were all a bit tired. It was interesting though because there was this black line painted on the floor in the middle of the museum in some exhibit rooms ... read more

Julia wasn't feeling entirely well today, so we decided to do something that she wouldn't mind missing quite as much. This happened to be one of the places I was most excited about seeing- Oxford. We visited the Ashmolean Museum and I was very disappointed to find the floor where the pre-Raphaelite collection is kept closed for renovation. A few were still being exhibited, and with all the other fine art and antiques it was well worth going. We stopped for lunch at The Eagle and Child (meeting place of the Inklings) and enjoyed some good pub fare just outside of the Rabbit Room, where Lewis and Tolkein, among others, met every Tuesday. After this we went on a 2 hour guided tour of the colleges and university. Our guide was fantastic and I could have ... read more

Last night I was invited to Italian restaurant - imagine my surprise when I found out that it's in an old church! I'm not sure what the story is, but someone the church organization moved out, and the restaurant moved in. The kitchen is up where the altar was, including a wood-burning oven for the pizza... It really was a beautiful Gothic church with the stained glass windows and everything. Oh, well... See below for a picture. The food actually was really good (especially the tiramisu), and the place was packed by the time we left. ... read more
