Well, here I am. Millions of hours of flights (slight exaggeration), and passport control has let me in! Silly silly people! The airport departure was as emotional as expected. Thank you to those who wanted to come down but understood my selfishness in only wanting the direct family. Little neice Mikayla was the most in control, simply repeating "bye bye tracey", as she had done for several weeks. I felt for the person sitting next to me on the flight as I sniffled through most of the kms to Sydney. A look in the mirror once there revealed that tears had sent mascara running down my face - how attractive! No wonder the flight attendants gave such sympathetic looks. A long wait in the customs line in Sydney with a massive group of Japanese students ahead ... read more

Hey Dudes, I have since returned home to England from Fiji, but not before stopping in the US of A and it's large state (well I suppose they are all relatively large to English counties) of California - sometimes shortened (is that a word?) to "CA" in prose...Anyhow, time was a factor from flying from Fiji to California. Crossing the International Date Line (as you do), I was forced into reliving 9 hours of the same day, not on the plane, but in America. My first task was to have my index fingers scanned, which I managed to make complicated by failing to press hard enough on the touch pad! and then a cheesy photo, taken by passport control, using a small "web-cam looking" device! I was heading to San Diego from Los Angeles' LAX airport ... read more

1st November 2005 Godalming, Surrey, England. Growing up in Queensland left me with an ignorance of the beauty of climatic seasonal changes, for in Cairns all that you have is the Wet and the Dry seasons. Which means that for most of the year, it's varying degrees of hot and there's very little rain to be had; perfect beach weather. Then for about two or three months after March, the Wet Season kicks in, heralding almost non-stop rain, the occasional cyclone, a constant humidity which is thick enough to choke upon, and usually a fortnight of what we innocents bemoan as being 'cold'. But our trees are forever green and unchanging. They may go through their own brief little phases that seem unconnected with the weather, dropping their leaves about as quickly as they grow new ... read more

After months of deliberating (procrastinating?) we have finally taken the plunge and decided to take a 'career break / mid-life crisis' to experience what the world has to offer beyond the familiarity of the cosmopolitan mecca known as Guildford. Having spent weeks taking advice from family, friends and visiting the quacks for many painful jabs (both physically and financially), we have ignored most of your warnings and booked our tickets anyway. We will be leaving London on the 15th Sept 2005 starting in St Petersburg in the Russian Federation and plan to spend a year travelling East through some of the lesser beaten paths whilst not forgetting some of the must visit destinations. Even NZ! Life is supposedly all about 'the journey', so we intend to travel by land wherever practical and stay in hostels and ... read more

Hi. Just thought I would add some more pictures for the sake of it. The following photos are from Kingston on Thames, (Surrey) which is about 40 minutes South West of London on the overland train. I went out there for the day just before I left London, to see where my family history lies. One picture is of the house where my great grandmother was born in 1895, & where she lived with her family until they moved to New Zealand. It was nice to see because she didn't die until she was 97, so I knew her for a great deal of my life. It was incredible to find the house still there &, although obviously renovated over the years, also in good condition. I later went to Hampton Court Palace which was about ... read more

July 23rd 2005 Bayswater, London, England. Guess where I was on Thursday the 21st, when the second (attempted) terrorist bombings took place in London? About thirty metres away from the Shepherd's Bush tube station, scene of a failed bomb detonation!! I swear it's true, my hand to god. I have just spent the last three days on a weekend break in London. And damned if I'm not more exhausted than when the break began! I didn't arrive at London Waterloo station until after noon on the 21st, having found it hard to have faith in my replacement and drag myself away from the job - yeah, I know, I'm completely hopeless. The London tubes were still in a complete mess from the successfull bombings two weeks ago, so the closest I could get to Bayswater was ... read more

July 17th 2005 Godalming, Surrey, England. Life becomes almost laughably idyllic here in my little corner of the world, as I build an easy-going, comfortable rapport with my client/couple and we slide into something vaguely resembling a routine. There's still a never-ending assortment of people - nurses, physiotherapists, doctors, family, staff, tour groups, visitors - always coming in and out, but that's no longer as disorientating as it was initially. In fact, it's nice to always be busy. Some home-caring assignments can probably become very lonely and monotonous. Autumn is almost here, but until a week or so ago we would go down to the fruit gardens almost every day and pick raspberries, strawberries, gooseberries, red currants, and so forth. It was all very homespun and sweet. I have developed a mad craving for raspberries, which ... read more
