Anyone who has seen bluebells in an English wood knows how wonderful they look. The deep blue almost purple flowers against the lime green beeches, so fresh and bright after what has been a long cold winter. Flowers are bursting out of every rock crevice, every wall, flowerbed and garden. It is truly a beautiful time of the year and the sunshine has brought everything on in leaps and bounds as if they think if they don't get a move on, summer will be over and they will have missed it. It helps that many people have taken No Mow May to heart and the hedgerows and verges are burgeoning with cow parsley, buttercups and more. What a great initiative to help the pollinators after winter. We walked the dogs above Bramley and Chilworth along the ... read more

Haslemere is one of my favourite places to stay in the UK with fabulous walks, views and history. A great place for a short break away. Previously home to the late Arthur Conan Doyle, the writer of the world renound Sherlock Holmes, who moved to Haslemere from London in 1897. His former residence was called Undershaw, which he lived in until 1907. Aside from interesting history there are some brilliant places to walk locally such as the devils punchbowl, Waggoners Wells and some beautiful local trails in and around the town. The town itself is beautiful, quite upmarket, with a number of nice restaurants and pubs to eat or drink in. It's also highly accessible with direct trains... read more

Thursday - another one of those days which found me wondering how I managed to work and get ready to go on holiday. Over two years ago I would have found myself sitting at work with my mind divided between work and thinking what had I got to do to get away for my holiday . Life had changed . A blood test result sought out . A mixed message from the receptionist . What was wrong with saying one result had not come back . Instead she led us to believe all had come back and one required the GP's attention . Ring back tomorrow . Last minute shopping and buying just enough to tide us over for a few days . Plans made of where to hide said contraband from the authorities who were ... read more

We both remembered visiting Box hill in the past and decided to visit there on 2 June. We caught the train from Waterloo and reached Box Hill and Westhumble station round the lunch time. There were several young people who seemed to head for Box Hill from the station. We remembered houses and their gardens and pubs – nothing has been changed since the last time we were there. As we reached the main road, we walked under subway and found the footpath near Burgh Hotel. We climbed up the steep hill and steps for a little while. The footpath became less strenuous as we approached the summit level – and we were able to overlook Burgh Hotel, Flint Cottage known as George Meredith’s chalet, winery, lovely houses and magnificent mansions below. There were a lot ... read more

Today is the day !!! The battery is fixed and seems to be working . We have a long day ahead of us today. Our first stop of the day was the first of our Holy Trinities. The churchyard where my mum , my gran and grandad and numerous other relations are buried . The church was built in 1851 to serve the growing population of Gwersyllt . It is built of a dark stone in the Early Decorative style. It is a conventional shape of nave, chancel and spire with yew trees in the graveyard . I remember those well from visits as a child. Our weekly visit consisted of putting flowers on all the graves and my gran telling me who was buried in the churchyard. My granddad in a corner , my great ... read more

19 September 2019, Thursday Kingston on Thames to Putney Bridge London day 18 of Thames Path, day 34 of travel A note about the previous blog. Harlan's brother-in-law and Bob, a friend from Anthem, have given identification to our 'oreo' cows!' They are Banded Galloways bred in Scotland. A 15.9 mile day. Left the White Hart hotel around 0800 with plans to walk to the cafe at Petersham Nursery for breakfast (Google says open at 0900). We crossed over the bridge and at the lower level of the John Lewis building we saw the archeological section of a arched roof structure of a very early 14th century merchant's house. This is the exact spot the barrel-vaulted cellar and ornate chequerboard flint and chalk walls were discovered when working in the old bridge abutments. We elected to ... read more

18 September 2019, Wednesday Day 17 Thames Path, Chertsey to Kingston on Thames, day 32 of travel. After buffet breakfast at The Crown Hotel, we set out. The book indicated a 12 mile day but Garmin showed 12.9 miles. As we approached the Chertsey Bridge Wendy had just emerged from The Bridge Hotel and saw us, so we were blessed with her company for the day. After crossing the bridge we walked along Dumsey Meadow. The plants, animals, birds and fish are detailed on signs. The landscape is now that of Thames watermeadows. Also saw 'oreo cows,' black front and back and white middle. Just past Shepperton Lock we took the small Shepperton to Weybridge ferry across to the opposite tow path much like the old barge tow people would do. But, we were in a ... read more

17 September 2019, Tuesday Day 16 on Thames Path, Windsor to Chertsey, day 31 of travel. England. Day 16 on Thames Path It is a beautiful day as we leave Windsor. The flowers in town are putting on their final show in a burst of pride. We have grand views of the castle, that is providing the distant backdrop, from across the Home Park, an open area that faces the castle Today the highlights will be found in the meadows of Runnymeade. We find the two Lutyens gatehouses, one containing the Magna Carta Tea Room, and find Norma and Jo, having had their drinks, ready to take off. We take a break and then head down the meadows. Just over 800 years ago weak King John set his seal on the Magna Carta, "Great Charter." This ... read more

We visited Wisley Garden, Surrey on 17 July 2019. The last time we visited there was 2007; we’d heard that there had been a lot of extension work in the garden. We remembered taking South West train to Kingston and bus between Kingston and Wisley Garden. We were annoyed and confused with the announcement of South West train - …Freedom Pass, Oyster Cards are not valid on this train and you will be asked to pay for penalty faire if you fail to show the valid ticket… We got off at Vauxhall once and asked if we could travel to Kingston, Zone 6 with Oyster card. We were told by the railway staff that Oyster card would be valid for us to travel to Kingston. The train was also delayed by signal failure and it made ... read more

Golfing Bucket List Final Course for UK - Walton Heath Friday 31 May - Walton Health – woke this morning with tired legs after yesterday’s effort of hill climbing at St George’s. Graham has so been looking forward to playing Walton Heath for many years. When we started booking courses for this trip our one disappointment was we could not get a booking at Walton Heath on the Old Course as it was all booked out and we were offered a round on the New Course. We decided New would be better than missing out altogether. Imagine our excitement when we were talking to the starter and she remembered our booking request for the Old Course and she said we had come so far, she would squeeze us into the Old Course field. We were really ... read more
