Background: Great Britain, the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe. A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter is suspended due to bickering over the peace process.

Thanksgiving in England. We started discussing this on the coach ride to Bath approximately two weeks before Thanksgiving. A little late to start maybe but then we work well under pressure. We wrote out a guess list that included speakers and friends of the program and then began to discuss whether we could or wanted to bring friends or not. The major stuff - finding out if we could use the church hall and what had been done in previous years - we left up to Storm. For the time being, we left the plans alone because we were on a [View Full Entry]

Bonfire
Bonfire
One huge fire
So Monday was Guy Fawkes Day. The city had an official bonfire and fireworks a few tram stops away in the Forest so after dinner we headed down. Now, fireworks laws in this country are much different from at home. Almost anyone can buy fireworks and shoot them off wherever they want, which usually means their yards. And I am not talking about the little fireworks, I am talking full-fledged fireworks. And they do not only shoot them off on Guy Fawkes Day. We saw fireworks for a straight week. There was one night when we could watch two fireworks shows, [View Full Entry]

"Robin Hood and Little John a running through the forest" I know this happens to be a line from a Disney movie but as soon I as stepped into Sherwood Forest that is the first thing that came to my mind. Not only was it the first thing in my head but I could not stop singing that song the whole time we were there. So our adventure began today with Alex, Carrie, Erin, Kate, Kia, Joy and I traveling on a bus that took almost an hour to arrive at our destination. I know many of you probably know this [View Full Entry]

Robin Hood and Little John

A statue of the legendary fight on the bridge between Robin Hood and Little John
We decided that since we weren't going anywhere this weekend that it was high time that we went out to Sherwood Forest. And the leaves in their fall colors would still be on the trees. For a November day, it was still really nice out, and I didn't even feel the need to bring a jacket with me. So, this morning, we caught a bus into town and then went to the Tourist Center to buy Robin Hood hats or other small things so that we would have change for the bus out to the forest (the Sherwood Arrow). Then we [View Full Entry]

Hello ALL! Many appologies for not updating in forever. I promise after my midterm I will sit down after I finish one of my papers and I will share with you the following: * Fountain's Abbey (a continuation of the First house Trip) * London * Wales * Robin Hood [View Full Entry]

Battle practice, which I have decided to regard as weight training (since sports center membership is super expensive), started out with safety today. We were first tested by Sir Bodric on the no-hit zones. Then we armed up and warmed up in pairs with some sparing. I managed to get a few hits in today which is an improvement on last week. I was also given a little more instruction on how to fight and defend myself with a spear, which was good. Then we had safety testing with weapons. Against someone with a sword and shield, we had to get [View Full Entry]

Sunday October 14, 2007 I didn't think that I could find a sport I enjoyed as much as hockey. But until now I have never watched an entire rugby game. On the 13th, the semi-finals for the world cup were on: England vs. France. England was down for almost the whole game until the last 10 minutes - it was 8 to 9 and England scored twice making the final score 14 to 9. They wear no pads, like in American Football, and it seems like someone is hurt or injured about every 2 minutes. Unlike American Football, you can only [View Full Entry]

Today, Kia and I attended the Robin Hood Pageant today at the Nottingham Castle. The pageant is a living history festival complete with homemade crafts, puppet shows, music, jousting, fighting, and falconry. Kia and I wandered around and watched one guy making a bowl, looked at spices, watched a shoemaker, and looked at the goods that were for sale. Kia held a falcon which in her own words was "really awesome". I shot 8 arrows and over half of them hit the target, not necessarily near the circle but they did hit the target. The key, I guess is to keep [View Full Entry]

So, once again I headed off to track practice. I arrived a little early because at least this time I knew where I was going. Arriving early is almost as bad as arriving late. It seems that no one gets to things early here - ever. Which is a problem for me since I like to be at places about 10 to 15 minutes ahead of time. Anyway, everyone else showed up, and we did our warm-up laps. Then we did this thing, I guess it was part of the warm-up, where you just kind of jog around on the high [View Full Entry]

Today I attended my first ever battle and got to be scum. Yes, scum. Scum is the lowest soldier who has no armor but a helmet and carries a 9 foot spear. It was great. We started out with some sparing in pairs. I attempted to learn how to fight with a spear. You are not supposed to hit people, in mock battles and reenactment anyway, in the feet, ankles, shins, knees, hands, forearms, or head. Basically you aim for the thighs, upper arms, and stomach. This was difficult since we were supposed to hold the spear angled at about 45 [View Full Entry]
