The next part of my trip was a quick visit to see family. The last year and a half has been amazing as I've been able to spend time with them three times now! So, after I visited Lincoln Castle, I drove towards Nottingham. My gps directions crapped out, so I had to use a map. My cousins and I were laughing - I'm young enough to rely on my phone gps to go places, but old enough to know how to use a real foldout map, which I already had with me (I always do when I drive). So, it was a bit confusing within the city itself, but other than that it was super easy. I parked at the Mount Castle parking structure and easily found my way to our meeting point. I met ... read more

Today was a day of reflections. A funeral always brings out the old memories doesn't it? Memories of the person who has passed away and a realisation that relatives are getting fewer and farther between. After the funeral we made the short drive from the crematorium to the Museum of Timekeeping and on this journey my mind flitted back and forwards to school. Mr Hughes my old teacher was small with glasses. Everyone appeared small and wore glasses in the 1960's. He talked about "procrastination being the thief of time" He made me write this 100 times over. I cannot remember why he asked me to write this . I must have done something and I must have been wasting time. He commented on my silver brace which was trying its hardest to bridge the gap ... read more

"To what shall I liken the world? Moonlight reflected in dewdrops, shaken from a cranes bill." Dogen Zenji born around 1200 - died 1253. This was one of those apt sayings that pop up now and again on my calendar of Eastern philosophy. Rather apt somehow. Think back 50 years . Can you remember what you were doing when you heard that man had landed on the moon? It was one of those events that was etched in my memory. It was the same with the news that Kennedy had been assassinated, Elvis had died and the events of 911. I still can remember the room I was in when my friends gran came up to tell us the news that was coming out of Dallas, I was on the A41 in a car when the ... read more

Having seen all the beautiful exhibits at the Nottingham Show Floral Art. We headed to Southwell, our resting place for the night. The Saracen's Head was once known as the King's Arms, established in the 12th Century. The hotel was rebuilt in the 16th Century. King Charles I famously stayed at the Inn during 1642 when he raised the Royal standard at Nottingham Castle to signal the start of the first Civil War. During the Civil War he paid a final visit on his last night of freedom after he escaped from London. The next day he surrendered in Kelham to the Scottish Commissioners. In 1651 the name of the hotel was changed to 'The Saracen's Head'. Believed to be an insult to the monarchy , due to the story that Charles I was beheaded by ... read more

We had a nice lazy start to today and finished off the repacking. First stop was Asda in Worksop to buy some wine for our hosts tonight. We could not resist a visit to the other shops around Asda whilst there. As we had not really eaten anything substantial since yesterday lunchtime, we decided to pop into the pub alongside Asda called Roman´s Rest. They had a great meal deal offer which was more than enough for us two. Next stop onto Theresa´s sister Julie and her husband Mick. We last saw them when they were living in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, so it will be nice to see how they are settling back into the UK. It was a really great catch up finished off with a lovely BBQ cooked by Mick ... read more

"Homeward Bound " - The feeling you get whether you are away a day, a week , a month or longer. It is always nice to get back to sit in your own comfortable chairs, to eat what you want when you want. Egg on toast - beans on toast . To be able to sleep in your own bed. As I write this Gabby is sitting on our drive . We have arrived home after our short South Walian break. Gabby is a filthy girl and Glenn spent the best part of a morning cleaning her roof which had not seen a brush nor water for months. I spent the time getting washing into the washing machine and making lists of things to be done. The second day Glenn cleaned the outside of our girl ... read more

"Everything has beauty but not everyone sees it" Confucius utters common sense again . Hold that thought. This will be going somewhere in the direction of ugly things and industrial history. Not to everyones taste hence the beauty that some people miss. Gabby was taken up again to Preston for the satellite dome to be fitted . The silly sat nag takes us a different way everytime. Sometimes south and then up the M6 to Preston, sometimes across country east to west through Disley and the Airport ring road. Occaisionally she has taken us to Sheffield , over the tops to Manchester and today right up to Leeds and across the M62. A bleak and windswept motorway if ever there was one. Perhaps it feels worse to know that we are driving over Saddleworth Moor with ... read more

Saturday morning, after a nourishing breakfast of porridge and a bacon sandwich with brown sauce we were off down the M1 again back down to Nottingham. Even though the weather report was a little shaky I was determined to attend my first ever English professional football match. In this case a Championship level game between Brentford and Nottingham Forest. Before heading off to the stadium we stopped at Davey’s house to watch some of the early games while having a cup of tea. When it was time his wife drove us as close to the stadium as possible, telling the traffic official that she was “taking the lads to the football”. We were then left to walk the rest of the way on foot. It was great walking as the air was fresh and we were ... read more

As I rumbled up the tracks from London to Nottingham I was rocked into a delightful contented slumber. Snuggly in my seat, I was jostled awake by a woman and her unruly suitcase. Where were we? “Now arriving in Beeston”. Holy smokes that’s my stop and with that I hurriedly snagged my trusty silver traveling bag and disembarked the train. There waiting for me was Davey. Someone, I met in a hostel one random morning in Sydney eighteen years ago. Over the years we had hung out in North America, South America, and Asia. However, it had been ten years since I had last seen him. But the thing about true friendships is that no matter how long it has been you simply pick right back up as if no time had passed at all. After ... read more

Well its been 6 years in the making........ i guess in our 20s/30s we had unfinished business. We missed hed kandi! Our reason for ibiza, and we missed out due to the flights and other reasons. Over the years, H Kaz and Nix have all done their own thing, but like moths to a flame for ibiza, we are back! For 4 days all sensible judgement is out the window. We have learnt from last time!! What a wardrobe fiasco. Never will we forget going into ushuaia wearing the most in appropriate clothes. Getting back to the apartment and asking ‘so what have you bought thats actually appropriate? All of this (2/3 of iitems) totally inappropriate as we fell apart laughing. Golden rule girls, if you would wear it in england DONT pack it. If its ... read more
