Background: Great Britain, the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe. A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter is suspended due to bickering over the peace process.

Camping, camping and more camping... I never did much of it during my childhood and therefore as an adult, was quite surprised to discover it is among my most favourite past times. Whether pitching the tent in a well manicured park with all facilities at hand, or heading off the beaten track where hot water is an unthought of luxury and one must head off into the bush armed with loo paper and a spade...whatever the case, its truly one of my great loves. Although I camped my way around Europe last summer with May, Adam has not been near a [View Full Entry]

The world 's tiniest tent for two?
At last...tent pitched and ready for action
Enroute to Great Gable

I had a trial pack on friday, which showed me that I had too much stuff to fit in my case, as well as the fact that I was over the weight limit! I don't seem to manage the concept of 'packing light' very well... I have actually tried packing properly today and it was a lot more sucessful! I *think* I have got everything in my case and it has all fitted fairly well (although it is still a little bit over weight). I have also managed to put all the things I will need for my overnight stop in [View Full Entry]

It takes bottle to give up your job and put your career on hold, leave everything you know behind and declare yourself homeless for a year with the intention of spending all of your hard earned savings. It’s difficult turning your back on the social and economic pressures of buying a house, settling down, and chasing a career. But occasionally some people do break free from the system, somehow managing to suppress their personal fears by heading off into the unknown armed with a backpack and an airline ticket to face some of the most dangerous countries in the world. So last night as I was desperately trying to fall asleep but failing due to too much coffee. However it did not matter because at around 1 am this morning my bed started starting shaking as though someone was standing at the end shaking the bedpost as hard as they could. I of course was freaking out to myself because I wasnt sure what was going on or if I was just imagining things because I was so tired. Not only was the bed shaking like it was possessed but I could hear the walls shaking as well and our desks [View Full Entry]

Enchanted Well
Enchanted Well
A Wishing Well down in the caves
On Friday Siri and I decided to go and check out more of Nottingham, so we went to the caves and Galleries of Justice. The caves are all sandstone and were man made. They were used as a tannery until the 1600s. The tannery part of the caves were really rediscovered until they were going to build the Broadmarsh Shopping Center. During the Victorian era some of the caves were used as cellars and living areas for the not so wealthy. During WWII the caves were used as bomb shelters and we participated in an air raid as part of our [View Full Entry]

A Scary Blue Frog
A Scary Blue Frog
Beast of Central America. EEK!
I feel a bit like I'm cheating writing this from the comfort of my own room but it's just a dry run! I don't understand the codes at all so it's all going to be plain type from here on in! If you're reading this it must be working - yey! Not much else to tell apart from only 10 days to go now, the packing is half done, I'm well and truely immunised, have enough medication to start my own pharmacy and I've finally extracted my visa from the Mexican consulate after only 4 visits to London and in 2 [View Full Entry]

its kinda disappointing that everyone here speaks english. im also getting used to being able to flush toilet paper down the toilet. arrived into london fri nite and went straight to nottingham on a coach. flight was delayed by about 3 hrs still affected by the landing incident at heathrow, so luckily i had given a lot of leeway between the arrival time and the coach i booked way in advance in order to score the £1 fare. good old notts, i hardly recognise much. mustve spent too much time on campus when i lived here! there isnt really much to [View Full Entry]
