Background: Great Britain, the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe. A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter is suspended due to bickering over the peace process.

Bicycle! Europe » United Kingdom » England » Nottinghamshire » Nottingham
I attempted to ride one of the flat's bikes to the post office today after the registration mayhem. Now, I have been watching bikers fly past for about the last week or so as I tried to map out a route to campus that would not involve me riding on the road amidst traffic like so many of the bikers that I saw. After pumping up tires and taking several deep breaths, I pushed out onto the sidewalk - on the left side of the road. Strangely enough, this didn't feel weird. Everything went fine until the signs told me that [View Full Entry]

Yesterday, I began registering for classes, and what a day it was. Kate, Alex, and I had to register for a science class at two. This class registered at the Suton Bonnington Campus which was a good 20 minute ride away from the main campus. So, at about 12:40 we left the flat - and it started down pouring, this should have given us a clue about how the day would turn out - caught a Medlink to the Queen's Medical Center (QMC), and walked across the road to campus. We waited about a 1/2 hour for the hopper bus to [View Full Entry]

All right so I have had a very frustrating day today (26/9/07) and I just feel compelled to get it off my chest. Never again will I complain about the registration method at Luther. It is glorious, really. I started today at 6:30 am (about 12:30 am for those folks in the states) and caught the Medlink (a free bus from the city hospital to the Queen’s Medical Center (QMC) near University Park, where campus is.) It takes roughly about 45 minutes to an hour to get actually on campus from our flat so I was doing well I made [View Full Entry]

1st Church Europe » United Kingdom » England » Nottinghamshire » Nottingham
Yesterday was the first opportunity that we had to attend church since we have been here. Storm offered to bring us to the church that he has been attending which meets in an old school building, the Cornerstone Church. It is a contemporary service and I really liked it. It was very strange to hear everyone singing a familiar song in a very unfamiliar accent. The service was also set up very differently, with a good portion of the congregation leaving before the sermon for different meetings and, I think, Sunday School. The sermon was on Luke 15:11, the Prodigal Son. [View Full Entry]

Freshers Fayre Europe » United Kingdom » England » Nottinghamshire » Nottingham
Today was the beginning of Week One which is Freshers, or first years, week. Freshers Fayre is where all of the university's societies and clubs have booths set up down by the Sports Centre and the freshers come and see all the different societies and sign up for the ones they would like to join. If you have been to the Minnesota State Fair and inside Merchandise Mart or the Food Building you know how crowded it is. At Freshers Fayre it is that crowded and more. There was every society from chess to cheese to skydiving. I signed up for [View Full Entry]

This past week was spent on campus for International Orientation. To get to campus we had to take a bus, with all of our stuff that we had packed for the week. We made an interesting group to say the least. A ten minute or so bus ride later we arrived, walked up a huge hill which makes Luther's hills look like nothing, and then began trying to register. I had not received one or two of the emails that everyone else got so my registration took a little longer. They gave us our room keys and we went to unload. [View Full Entry]

"Ello All!! So this week produced a bunch of craziness in just a short time span. The week began with us getting back late to the flat on Monday night and then having to unpack and then repack clean clothes for tuesday-friday. Tuesday afternoon began the chaos of what became international student orientation week. However, it wasnt too bad. We stayed at Cripps hall on campus. My friend Katie and I had conjoining rooms in S hall and just decided to move our beds together one night. Yes kind of random, but it made for some fun late night chats. Wednesday [View Full Entry]

Flying to Chicago and from there to London was my first flight - if you don't count a quick ride in a three person plane for about ten minutes. Needless to say a jet is a bit different. But before even getting on the plane there was the whole experience of the airport. Kia and I got to Minneapolis Airport about three hours early and found that the parking at our terminal was full. So we drove to the other terminal and took the Light Rail over. After security and getting all checked in we waited for about two hours before [View Full Entry]

Hey all!!! Well the flying part of the journey to england is finally over and now the real fun begins. My flight started fine, well actually Katie and I showed up at Cedar Rapids at 4 for a 6:20 flight and they thought we were going on the 4:30 flight. When they finally realized what flight we were actually supposed to be on we were told that we would probably not make our connecting flight if we stayed with this airline. So, after clearing away our confusion we transfered to another airline. This being done they check-in lady said we needed [View Full Entry]

Oh, my goodness. I am here. I have made it. I am EXHAUSTED. I woke up in River Falls yesterday at 6:00AM, left the house at 2:00, departed from the states at 7:20pm, arrived in Reykjavik at 6:40am (their time), then arrived at Heathrow at 11:20am, took another 2.5 hour bus ride to Nottingham, arrived, unpacked, ate dinner, got cash, and went to the pub for a celebratory pint. I've had maybe four hours of poor sleep since my departure from River Falls. Pardon my loopiness in this entry. The flat is beautiful. Five bedrooms divided between ten flat mates- Alex [View Full Entry]
