Background: Great Britain, the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe. A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter is suspended due to bickering over the peace process.

Here we are getting all our stuff together into our coach
Hello Everyone! I'm writing to you from the Nottingham flat, it's about 9:35 London time so it's been a long day (several days.) For those of you unaware here's the scoop. After packing up my stuff and forgetting things (oh, mom--I found those quarters) my parents drove me to the cities to meet up with Erin M, a fellow Notter. We had a huge breakfast at Baker's Square then we went to the Lindberg terminal by way of Humphrey. Baggage check and all the check points went just fine, even with the highened security. Erin and I said good-bye to our [View Full Entry]

I know we must be going on holiday soon as the house looks cleaner than it ever has. A completely non essential job when you've only just found out that you're flying out a day earlier than you thought. The mad panic of getting everything done has now ground to a halt - now that Coronation Street has begun. Judging by the time i've got about seven more minutes before its all systems go again. Have almost sorted out all the hotel problems that only just emerged. We found out last night that the hotel we thought we had booked for [View Full Entry]

Over the hills and far away, the Yorkshire Dales National Park unfolded before us. Slowly, Footprints for Peace headed east from Sellafield. Upon the fells of the Lake District, down to the fields and across an Area of Outstanding Beauty, we waded the waters. In our shoes pools formed, sufficiently pruning our feet. The blisters swelled and the afternoon’s sandwiches became soggy. Day in and day out, we were wet, as England received record rainfalls for the month of June. In one day’s time, the city of Sheffield found itself floati [View Full Entry]

Flight Route Kia BurresonHello everyone! Even though there is still 68 days left (Kate and I are counting down) until I leave, I thought I'd get a head start and try to find a site that would help me to keep in touch with everyone still at home here while I'm abroad for the year. So far my summer has been enjoyable, I've been trying to work as much as I can while still allowing myself time to think about next year. Anyway I hope you are all well and this site will help you all to keep abreast of [View Full Entry]

Beautiful, hey?!
Having been awarded one of only fifteen places on the Media Net Academy at the Churches Media Council Conference, turned up excited by the prospect of three days at working at the crossover between the media (specifically, the web/internet) and Christianity. The general gist, as I understand it, is that many Christians see the media as a place of ‘evil’, and by encouraging more young Christians into the media maybe we can change the perception of this… We were soon introduced to each other as a big group, then [View Full Entry]

This was everyone having a few drinks before we headed to Nottingham
The evening started with me rushing around trying to put together my outfit (pirate gear) at the last minute (as per usual) but after a good hour we headed to the Red Lion for a couple of drinks before our hummer limo picked us up at 7.30pm to head to Nottingham. The hummer was a surprise for Ria (hen) and you should have seen her face when it turned up... well actually you should have seen all our faces, it was amazing and massive! inside it had lava lamps, blue lights, tv screens, sub woofers, and of course champange! I [View Full Entry]

Sherwood Forest--yes Robin Hood--is a 450 acre country park. It used to be bigger and a hunting ground for royalty. The Sheriff of Nottingham also hunted in the forest. There are actually many things to see and only a smidgen of the forest is devoted to Robin Hood. Of course that's where we started. The visitor center for the forest is in the middle of Robin Hood country. Most of what we know about Robin Hood is folklore/legend and the story changes in each time period. But we had fun walking around and learning more about him. We walked along [View Full Entry]

Nottingham Ariana and Lachlan We have finally found a place to settle in the East Midlands city of Nottingham (pronounced Not-ing-um by locals ). Our apartment is close to the train station, which makes for an easy commute for Lachlan. There is a great tram and bus network nearby so we’re loving jumping on and off the light rail checking out the local shopping, restaurants and pubs and generally wandering around getting a feel for this exciting city. The region is famous for Sherwood Forrest- home of Robin Hood an [View Full Entry]
