Background: Great Britain, the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe. A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter is suspended due to bickering over the peace process.

One of the oldest oak trees in Sherwood Forest
Well another weekender to talk of - and some time spent watching the likes of Ronaldo and Rooney! But first, our latest weekend trip saw a visit to Sherwood Forest, outside of Nottingham. Folklore, old wives tale and numerous over-hyped movies all tell the story of Robin Hood and his merry men asailing through Sherwood forest, stealing from the rich, ya-da ya-da, so on and so forth etc. So we drove down in Sheryl to see what we could find. The forest has been setup for the families to visit, with This week we had the opportunity to go to the [View Full Entry]

I made a short video using some of the clips from Christmas day, go to the link below and wait for the entire video to load before watching, it may take a few minutes. The video quality is not the greatest, but it's good enough. Enlarge the screen before watching by clicking the lower-left hand box beneath the viewing screen. Enjoy! youtube [View Full Entry]

Me! In Delft!
Me! In Delft!
I found this on my camera the other day. I quite like it.
Well this is all very exciting. Four days to go and I've been persuaded to download Skype by Simon, and I have to say, I am converted! It's the best thing since the red boots I bought last week! So now everybody needs to get Skype. It's FREE! Get a headset from Argos - £6... BARGAIN! C'mon, how can you resist? So anyway, I'm doing this and I should actually be packing. But I don't want to pack! I'm scared of everything not fitting in, and then I'll have to rethink everything... Boo. I'm pleased to say that I have worked [View Full Entry]

Hello! Europe » United Kingdom » England » Nottinghamshire » Nottingham

Dinner before take-off
Hi everyone! I’m trying this travel website thing to keep in touch and hopefully post some interesting photos of Europe. I figure it’s a bit more convenient and more fun than sending out loads of emails. I’ll try to update every once in a while. So here’s what it’s been like, in a very broad sense, so far: The food isn’t as bad as I’ve heard it to be, but there are a lot of strange foods/combinations of foods that I’ve never seen in America. I’ve been attempting to try some new dishes and for the most part have liked them. [View Full Entry]

It's often rainy and cold in England. I don't think they do cold in South America :)
This is all very exciting. I don't have much to say today apart from two more weeks to go, ooooh and I hope I can delete this blog if the weird italic codes don't work and stuff. It's harder than it looks! I'm currently embarking on the mammoth task of photocopying all of my important documents. Oh the joy! But unfortunately I can't divide equally the excitement of photocopying and blogging, so I am going to leave this right here and write a better entry... Some other time.BYE! [View Full Entry]
