London by any means... We were supposed to start our 7 month, round the world trip on the 16th April 2010. As I had relatives living in London we thought it would be nice to arrive a few days early and go and visit people before we head off. So, arriving at cork airport (Ireland) on Thursday morning, having said alot of teary goodbyes, we were ready to finally start our adventure! It was then that things began to go very wrong.... Being blissfully unaware of the volcanic eruption that had occurred in Iceland only a few hours before we posed with our shiny new rucksacks for a last photo outside of the terminal. Looking back at the photo later, with some ironic amusement, we saw a guy standing in the back round smoking a cigarette ... read more

We went to Ranger's House, Blackheath, which is managed by English Heritage and is home to an extraordinary wealth of medieval, Renaissance, and later works of art collection on 8 August 09. Upon arrival, we showed our membership cards, and entered the exhibition rooms. We firstly read the panels of Julius Wernher's biography. We understood that Julius Wernher was born in Germany , and the opportunity to work with Charles Mege in South Africa changed his life. With great success of dealing with raw diamonds, he gained an incredible amount of fortune. There were displays of a Louis XV mechanical travelling cabinet which he received as a Christmas present in 1874, and it made him begin collecting beautiful crafted of art. There was a huge array of antique jewellery, ivories, enamels, medieval art collection, e.g. ... read more

Not feeling the best today for my flight out of London to New York, it takes around 8 hours lets hope it goes quick...........Had to pack up my suitcases again, not getting used to this whole packing & unpacking business but it has been so worth it. Walked down the road to get breakfast, egg & bacon roll, coffee & water. Packed up the rental car & then headed out to see Jase's Aunt & Uncle, they were looking after Will for the day & night. They were really friendly, Don & Penny, had a light lunch then got back in the car & drove to Heathrow Airport. Entered the Qantas lounge & just sat back & relaxed, had a bite to eat & surfed the internet. Got on the plane around 7.30pm......London time. Plane trip ... read more

Today was a really restful day in Aberdeen, had to pack all my bags for the journey to London today at 2.oopm. Becc & I went to the gym yesterday again, could so get used to going to this gym. Its been great to still be able to work out & holiday at the same time. Had to check all the footy scores both AFL & Barossa League......not so good about the Bombers but the Pies are going great guns. Packed both my suitcases & they are very heavy, will hate to see what they weigh at the end of my trip. Today Annie and I went to visit Fiona (Annie's old flatmate who I got to know a little bit in 2007) and her new baby J in the town of Woking (nicknamed shocking woking). He is only about 8 weeks old and was so lovely to cuddle! It further cemented in my mind the idea of having another baby (possibly, maybe???)! I enjoyed chatting with Fiona is a very honest person - a breath of fresh air. If the highlight of the day was cuddling baby J, then the low light definately was baby J vomited dawn my clevage! After we visited Fi we caught the train back to Waterloo Station and walked across the waterloo bridge and took some great photos of Westminster. I also bought a painting from a french man who was painting ... read more

Took the Docklands Light Rail to the National Maritime Museum to see British Naval and Maritime history enroute to the Royal Observatory at Greenwich. It's a good museum that's kid friendly. In fact, there were several school groups there. The museum shows the importance that accurate time measurement played in the history of navigation. Latitudes could be determined from a Sextant and the stars. But, longitudes had to be created with the standardization of time to make East-West travel a practical reality. Does this mean no clocks meant no colonization? What if the Luddites had busted clocks instead of weaving machines? Just more random thoughts. History is never that simple is it? The Chinese first invented the clock, the compass and navigated in large fleets to Western Africa. No raping, pillaging or colonization. Well, there were ... read more

Spent time at the Royal Observatory at Greenwich where we stepped on the Greenwich Meridian line and contemplated time looking at various clocks and telescopes through the ages. We also went inside the walk in Camera Obscura, which is a giant “pin hole camera”. Since it was "aimed" at the River Thames area, it showed pedestrians, cars, trucks ... ok lorries ... and Thames river cruisers. Kind of like an ancient video camera. Only no replay nor audio. ... read more

The start of our European Adventure begins as we finished up work in Birmingham (again). Day 440 (25/6/09) After a another farewell dinner at Morrocan restaurant with Bill, Sarah and Chris, followed by a couple more drinks at the local Fighting Cocks. Jez kicked on into the wee hours and stumbled home convinced he'd been locked out despite having keys in his pocket. We headed off to work to tie up all the loose ends for a couple hours, Jez feeling a little worse for wear. We picked up our gear, had quick lunch, tidied up and farewelled Birmingham for the next 6 weeks as we headed to London to met Jez's parents Leanne and Brian who were doing there own eight week European Tour. We arrived in London, and after getting our fix of barbeque ... read more

Day 1. Just a short boring note to let you all know we've made it safely to London and the weather is great! A damp day in Moncton, with a forecast of rain through the week and into the weekend. Fog as thick as pea soup through the Cobequid pass, but it clears soon enough and traffic on a Tuesday night is light so we make great time. Once in Halifax, Curtis makes friends with airport security, see pic of the special attention he received. :P We take off at midnight on time. This had to be the biggest non military plane I’ve even flown on (although a Herc may just beat it). I sat up near the front and Curtis is actually standing by his seat near the back in this pic. We arrive in ... read more
