Well that’s Ilfracombe almost done and dusted. We arrived here almost a week ago after spending most of the day in Exeter followed by a slow, wet drive across the moors to Ilfracombe. When we arrived our AirBnB hosts had the fire on! Exeter was pleasant but uneventful. It wouldn’t be an overseas trip unless Terry was trying to find something – a tiny screw driver in rural France, shoe polish in rural China and a replacement camera battery charger in Devon. We spent a bit of time trying to do that but eventually found success and saw parts of Exeter that we hadn’t counted on. Exeter is a relatively small city and was easy to negotiate by foot once in the centre of town – we left our car at the Park ‘n’ Ride. Lunch ... read more

It’s the morning of our last day in East Devon and I’ve been awake since 4:30. At this time of year, pretty much mid-summer, it’s light from about 4:00 am until after 10:00 pm at night. My mobile ringing with a call from Australia didn’t help either (note to self: turn off phone overnight). We’ve been staying in the town/village of Budleigh Salterton which is on the southern coastline of Devon not that far from Exeter and at the western end of the Jurassic Coast. Over the years we’ve considered trying an assisted through-walk along the Jurassic Coast but Terry’s recent leg surgery and our lack of real fitness put a stop to that idea. Our accommodation is part of a barn that has been converted and an adjacent thatched cottage. The thatched cottage is our ... read more

Now that we’ve been back for over 5 weeks (scary!), it seems a good time to write our final blog and look back on perhaps the best 7 months of our lives. When travelling, there are moments where you feel the need to pinch yourself to make sure that this really is your life… There are also moments where you can’t imagine things any other way, and even start taking it for granted… and, unfortunately, because you’re only human, there are moments where you’re in a bad mood and really don’t appreciate how lucky you are. Having said that, I don’t think there was a single morning that I didn’t wake up and think “how lucky am I?”! There is no doubt that our decision to go travelling was the best we’ve ever made. It’s very ... read more

I always knew the first day was going to be the worst, however day 2 turned into a world of hurt. The early start is now becoming the norm and after the third night without proper sleep I was out through the start gate just after 7am. On paper today was the second toughest day. However, it started more to my liking with rolling hills and the weather was still hot, but one of the highlights of the entire ride happened today. Along one of the little country lanes a family was handing out water to all of the riders: it was a fantastic moment and sort of personified the support we got all along the route. The first real climb of the day was Cothlestone Hill where we entered the Quantocks. This was a really ... read more

Weds night saw me finish my last shift, begin loading the last of my belongings into my car, with help from Jamie and George, not all of it rammed in, so some on the roof and some left behind. After a pit stop at the stags head inn to wish a fond farewell to Sue, John & Sally who were my first hosts in Devon 6 years previous. Unfortunatley Craig who I was due to visit late had gone to bed, so overloaded I crept onto dorset for a nights sleep, shedding of weight into their garage space and onto Sussex to clear the car and put her into storage herself.... read more

Due to inconsistent internet access, I lost my previous writing :( again! To recap - We spent our last full day in Devon in its capital city of Exeter. Exeter is a great metropolitan area with a beautiful cathedral and large courtyard at its center. There are shops, street musicians and artisans that surround the cathedral area. We had our typical afternoon tea, which we will greatly miss! Not just for the delicious, melt-in-your-mouth scones with clotted cream but also for the pause that it allows for. A pause that requires nothing from its participants except for presence. It allows for conversation and reflection. I did not see people on cell phones or using digital devices. It was good ol' conversation at every table, on every day. After a day of sightseeing, we came back to ... read more
