31/05 around 55k to Chai Bay (part of) Halong city via a ferry from the east side of hai phong, lounge about in happy hostel and join a Halong bay boat tour the next day 01/06, very busy at the start but not as overcrowded as I feared, Halong bay still has some magic. A wicked evening with the dormitory gang in a power cut struck pizza joint; owned by a lively guy Joe from Kentucky who dished us out free alcohol and songs on his guitar, thumbs up! 02/06 after a lazy morning I head off on my first leg towards Hanoi. Heading north to include some mountain views I miss my turn off nether the less continue into the mountain valley up some hard hills but some knockout scenery that I had not expected. ... read more

Asia » Laos » South » Salavan May 12th 2016

As of a wait for my Vietnam visa to activate in 4 days time I bus east to savvanakhet the following day, a pleasant mini city with good eating options and a picturesque downtown area, return to Phin and crawling 20k onto xepon via a few off beat village diversions, a cheerful food market in xepon fit with curbside piglet sales in the morning time! a local tip leads to a lazy half day washing clothes in a set of nearby rapid/waterfalls. A night in the town known as dong, after seeing a few trucks in town with dudes dancing to loud pop tunes I find a vibrant party atmosphere and festivities at a local wat on a random excursion, greeted with a cup of cold beer and flowers pinned on my shirt I buy some ... read more

Asia » Cambodia » South » Phnom Penh April 14th 2016

14/04/16 Catch a bus part way and then hitch to the airport through the ghost town of Negumbo (New Years), wedge myself into a seat at the port and sit it out until late evening, pleasingly swept through immigration without quibble with my ever so slightly) expired visa. 15/04/16 Watch Star Wars rather than sleeping and knock into Bangkok to join a 6.30am "skytrain" into city. A little jaded first day in a songkrang festival sleepy Bangkok. Wonder a little before an Asian siesta and a quiet evening mooch of town. 16/04/16 Go see the jungle book at mega mall central world and begin a couple of days discovering this extremely likeable world. The food on offer is insane. It's not fully explainable while the street eating is most famous but the choice of food malls ... read more

Asia » Sri Lanka » Southern Province » Tangalle April 2nd 2016

Tavel south to via Puttalam to chilaw for a very enjoyable stay with couchsurfing host Roshan and his dear mum; a lovely home in a pleasant town. 03/04/16 I venture back 10k north to Anawilundawa and charm myself someone's bicycle for an enjoyable morning roll around the lesser known listed wetland. Very pretty and pleasingly heavy with birdlife, I return to Roshan's house until after a tasty lunch and head on my way via Kurunegala to Kagalle for a nights stay. 04/04/16 bus to Pinnawala and swing by to learn more of the nearby millennium elephant foundation (slightly construed ethics - essentially a heavily funded elephant riding park lol ) then after lunch dodging the mammoth entrance fee wonder down & watch the Pinnawala herd bath in the river. I bus south onto Ratnapura, 05/04/16 enjoy ... read more

I leave Tom & Amy on their return journey south to drop the car back to Kandyland and I myself catch a bus to Anuradhapura for a simple stay at Gordans lodge (some kind of uk funded abode) 1800 SLR for two nights including a bicycle for sight seeing. 28/03/16 bicycle around the sacred city sights of Anuradhapura a smorgasbord of dagobas, ancient ruins & temples; not that UNESCO haven't sunk their teeth into the ticketing, I cycle back after a tasty Indian. 29//03/16 catch the 5 hour bus north to Jaffna scouting out a place to stay and spend the afternoon crawling up town. A very peaceful and super polite atmosphere, lots of NGO's and Europe linked schools & colleges about sporting lots of jolly welcomes in English . It's not centre parks but considering ... read more

Asia » Sri Lanka » Central Province » Kandy March 18th 2016

Sri Lanka family road trip 18/03/16 meet up with Tom & Amy after their delayed arrival; get our drivers licence permit visit the attractive Buddhist temple complex 7k from town, stroll the national museum and later tuck into a finger licking crab & prawn supper @ "ministry of crab" restaurant. 19/03/16 catch our pre booked 9am train to Kandy; 3 hours of scenic mountain track through forest. Clock into Kandy and tuk to a guest house near the lake, grab a tasty curry lunch and whip around town struggling to find self drive car hire, lots of shaky heads and thumbs down due to a holiday weekend but eventually track down a winner and loosely arrange a mystery car for the following morning. 20/03/16 Visit the impressive botanical gardens in the morning and fetch our Nissan ... read more

Asia » India » Kerala » Idukki March 6th 2016

Kumily> I stay the night here then leave lunchtime 06/03/16 reaching cheruthoni for an afternoon visit to udikki Dam, Kerala has heaps of hydro, this being the second tallest in all India hosting a very picturesque mountain reservoir behind (though, all photos prohibited). Spend a quiet Sunday night in a local lodge before 07/03/16 heading via Adimali to non descript town Kalady with a plan to use the forest road north of here to reach Athriapally for some water fall action. Unsurprisingly tricky to translate my intentions at the bus stand, while grabbing a cornetto I spy a bus going to malayatoor which is roughly correct, from there I establish the right road and head out on foot a fair distance before getting a hand from a quarry truck then bunny a bike I reach more ... read more

Asia » India » Tamil Nadu » Pollachi February 28th 2016

28/02/16 arriving an hour early @ 4am but still manage to seamlessly connect to Pollachi where I enjoy morning chai until meeting up with Harish (couch surfing host) to spend a morning at his tennis club with a great crowd & super breakfast, I get to see Harish's side business venture producing artisan chocolate from their own crop. After a catch up on sleep and town stroll before an enlightening visit to one of his impressive bio diverse spice & coconut plantation. Route back via local cattle market before an awesome evening with Harish & his lovely wife. Tasty food, farming chat & a manutd win on the box. 29/02/16 a morning lie in and with my new friend's assistance jump on the bus south to Topslip for some further time in the wild. 21/02/16 Leave Aseem's and join a 11am bus to Mananvathady 100k away inside the north Kerala rural patch of Wyanad, bus to visit the local village of Peechangode for my stay with second (csurfing host) Niraz. 22/2/16 Move sticks south to Vythili and spend the entire day strolling the surrounding foresty, tea cropped areas. 23/2/16 bus to meppadi at the feet of chembra peak, minus the compulsory clingy guide an enjoyable steep assent with misty plantation views yet not actually to the "peak" as is sadly restricted. Back in time for a late lunch followed by an afternoon on the buses to Varnham homestay north west of mananthavady to enjoy a higher standard of stay, great meals, sanctuary safari with other guests & more walkies. I nip a super 24 hour stay in the bud & ... read more

Asia » India » Karnataka February 16th 2016

16/02/16, in hind sight an overnight bus was the better option, though a scenic train track through the heights of tropical forest however being one of the standing sardines in a thickly packed out second class coach (fit with crazy man lock & chained to a bar) for a delayed 8 hours wasn't so romantic as planned! Cruise into Hampi by local bus from station and enjoy a further 3 full days foot & cycle exploring not just a monolithic pick'n mix of temples, structures and grand enclosures yet a fully qualified horizon gulping landscape of river, rock and ruin. switching 300 rupee digs daily to spend the first exploring the temples north of the water with the latter two exploring all major sights by foot & bike in the south. 20/02/16 after my first night ... read more
