Sri Lanka family road trip
18/03/16 meet up with Tom & Amy after their delayed arrival; get our drivers licence permit visit the attractive Buddhist temple complex 7k from town, stroll the national museum and later tuck into a finger licking crab & prawn supper @ "ministry of crab" restaurant. 19/03/16 catch our pre booked 9am train to Kandy; 3 hours of scenic mountain track through forest. Clock into Kandy and tuk to a guest house near the lake, grab a tasty curry lunch and whip around town struggling to find self drive car hire, lots of shaky heads and thumbs down due to a holiday weekend but eventually track down a winner and loosely arrange a mystery car for the following morning. 20/03/16 Visit the impressive botanical gardens in the morning and fetch our Nissan sunny after a short delay, head straight off on the drive to newarellia and find a quiet bungalow for the night. 21/03/16 kick on to nearby scenic Devon & st Claire waterfalls then about turn and follow a less than certain back road (my idea) through tea estates which sadly ends up being too tough for our car so then gulp up
time re-routing round for a nights stay in Ella.
22/03/16 walk up to some fantastic views from "mini Adams peak" and seek out the nearby 9 arch scenic railway bridge (still stamped from the English) fit with passing train, spend the afternoon driving onto Arugam bay, check into a white walled beach side hotel. glorious after drive swimming along the surfer beach, enjoy a fish bbq dinner in the quiet off season tourist strip. 23/03/16 venture out some sunning sandy coastline stretches nearby before clicking up the coast via Ampara to Kalkudah for a lovely stay at Victoria's guest house. 24/03/16 head further north stopping off at a picturesque clear water fishing beach near Panichchankeni then drive along the lagoon lined A15 to Nilaveli, check into a nice beach hut then return to Trincomalee for a car fix, caustic sounding brake pads are replaced in sharpish time, grab a nice meal at a slightly odd charitable homestay in quiet uppuveli.
25/03/16 enjoy a super day out at nearby pigeon island; a national park/ Marine protected coral lined island with great snorkelling on offer. Sharks, Turtles and many species of sizeable fishes flowing over the
reefs, only downer is the scorching sun gets us all over the 3 hours with pink skin all round 😞! Move south onto the minneriya national park for a simple lake side stay with family volley ball match for evening fun. 26/03/16 Next day decide on a local Eco park afternoon safari but get lucky in the morning by bumping into a family of elephants on a local road driving about, enjoy a chilled out morning by the lake then later jump on our beat up truck for a thoroughly off road safari, strong sun but really enjoyable wild elephant spotting and a few treasured close encounters. Drive onto Sigiriya for a nice guest house stay, enjoy an evening in a local restaurant catching the Srilanka v England t20 match. 27/03/16 busy Easter Sunday visit to Sigiriya Rock, not entirely worth the 30 dollar! entry fee but a cool thing to do, we drive on to visit the Dambulla cave temples; impressive Buddhist creations inside painted dark coves.
