Asia » India » Maharashtra » Mumbai February 7th 2016

07/02/16 catch a 6am 2.5 hour flight to Mumbai, locate a local guest house/hostel, a little crowded but a bed none the less. Venture south via metro & train to visit a couple of art galleries, exhibitions around a seasonal street arts festival while stumbling upon the odd sight. 08/02/16 move into the Salvation Army hostel in the south, I spend the rest of the day with a small group voice dubbing a Bollywood movie, my few lines as a policeman in what looked like a Bollywood attempt at a thriller, set in Ireland made a fun afternoon & an insight into how things get done. 09/02/16 head off first thing on a tour of the Dharavi Slum; Asia's largest hosting a fascinating collection of back street industries grossing estimated to be well over $400 million ... read more

Asia » India » Uttar Pradesh » Varanasi January 30th 2016

30/01/16 out of Rajasthan on my classy AC class train (SL full) to nearby Agra, similar boomerang tactics as Delhi with a night train to Varanasi booked, I arrive before 11am, locker my pack at station for 15 inr and head straight to the Taj, I marvel at the marble for as long as one can but become a little itchy for a different perspective, hitch a ride in a random minivan until over the river then shortly after wave down a Tuk, turns out to be a French and Australian pair's hired wheels for the day, I ride with them further to the gardens facing the taj from the opposite shore for sunset. With my intended eatery on the same road as their hostel I ride back to main town with Loren & Francsoir, on ... read more

Asia » India » Rajasthan » Ranthambhore National Park January 26th 2016

Arrive kinda late, find the cheapest place I can amongst some big brassy hotels & resorts on the ranthambore strip whilst booming music plays out of drive along mobile disco, all in aid of Indian Independence Day , 26/01/16 wake up fairly early and wonder along the road adjacent to the park perimeter, find an inviting open gate and venture in a mile or two amongst many herbivorous mammals in the mist, further along said road is the regular road entrance to the park & its fort, I route to it and cling on the back of a jeep taxi to ranthambore fort; a historic fort come ruin with several well attended temples, lots of pilgrims but even more monkeys (piece of advice..as tempting as it is, don't grab their long tail). I return to ranthambore ... read more

Asia » India » Rajasthan » Udaipur January 20th 2016

Book train jodhpur, visit the fort palace museum (poor), impressive Patwa ki palace/ temple and very nice food @ saffron. 20/01/16 join David from Barcelona for 6 hour sleeper carriage to Jodhpur, reaching main station after 1, walk into the main centre, check into guest house with David named after its slightly peculiar owner Anil, visit bus station and wander the streets leading to the old blue city and up to the feet of the fort walls, circle back around via 2 of the temples to the clock tower markets and return to nest after a super eggplant curry. The best street food I've had was all in colourful jodhpur. 21/01/16 Get on the very sociable 10.30am bus to ranakpur, just after passing through a very extravagant wedding parade of many highly decorated elephants, horses & ... read more

15/01/16 Arrive in beautiful Pathankot for breakfast and join my Rajastan bound sleeper train @ 11am, climb aboard my favoured shelf,a chilly ride with most under big blankets, doze along before reaching Bikaner junction at midnight. 16/01/16 rough sleep the night in the station waiting room and head out at 7, check my pack into a nearby "hotel", walk to the Town, get in on student rate(?) impressive architecture at scale, decorative & well worth a visit just to see the weapon exhibits & cool old photos, via the post office to the bhandasar temple in the old city, return back to town and catch a 20 inr bus to Karni Mata temple 30ks from town. An irresistible trip to what's known locally as the mouse temple, local descendants of the late Karni Mata fully intend ... read more

Africa » Ethiopia » Harari Region January 6th 2016

After a daily juice, catch a bus for 20 brr to nearest large town of Dire Dawa, seek out the Salem bus office to find none running 07/01/16 as for Ethiopian Christmas Day, manage to arrange by the offering of someone in the queue (such is Africa) local minibus seat instead for 300 brr. Decide against trying to see the local cave art, more of a group bus outing for the distance, update the blog here and there along with a stroll round the old town and cool market. Enjoy some goat meat tibs and turn back to my basic hotel where I join a 70 year old man in search of water for my shower :) 150 brr room with a fan! 07/01 Armed and ready to go after a 3.30 am call from my ... read more

Africa » Ethiopia » Afar Region » Danakil Depression December 29th 2015

Drive first to Abala, small town for join up with other trucks, not too bad if not for some irritating kids. Drivoe until reaching our pick up point for police escort to danakil landscape. Walk down to a camel / salt trading post before driving onto our first camp after some Africa time which means it's dark but beautiful stars ahead, sleep on raised beds with simple mattress & s bag under the stars. 30/12/15 head first to the salt lakes and drive through the shallows to the raised acid lakes of danakil. Incredible landscape nicknamed the hottest place on earth for its record temperature in the hot season. Avoiding the bubbling sulphur fumes makes for a fascinating multicoloured visit. Drive back out across the liquid salt to later reach the current mining site with all ... read more

Africa » Ethiopia » Amhara Region » Lalibela December 25th 2015

I leave Gondar the next day 25/12/15 on the 5am local service for 150 brr to Lalibela, meet four Belgium lads on the bus which ends up cram full, not a great deal of leg room for non Ethiopians hah but none the less we eventually reach Lalibela around 4pm, I track down the recommended Salem guest house stay for 300 brr which is very pleasant and near the main cluster of churches. I spend the next two mornings at the churches for mass, this can be from midnight onwards but I'm not that keen. I meet Baruch on my first afternoon after viewing the bustling Saturday "farmers" market and tag along with his guide for the second morning (a busier Sunday), I even manage to find the football on the Saturday via a football den ... read more
