When I first arrived back home I told everyone two months, I’ll be back for two months. I leave on the 3rd of August. Oh how wrong I was. I didn’t end up leaving until a month later, on the 4th September. I had a flight booked for August! I had a job waiting! But I had visa issues! The last time I went to China I flew to Hong Kong and got a visa there. However recently China have been more forceful on their visa requirements and a lot more was required. I had my degree and TEFL already notarised by a solicitor so I had one part of the process done. I had to apply and then wait for a police check to be notarised and a letter from my University to prove I ... read more

There are many great Dartmoor pubs. The Tavistock at Poundsgate is one of my favourites. It is in "the middle of nowhere" with hardly a house in sight, but has great atmosphere and the parking lot across the road is often full with people coming from near and far. It has its roots from the 14th century and you feel little has changed over the years. The thick stone walls and the low, beamed roof certainly would have some stories to tell if they could speak. Today Dartmoor feels remote and sparsely populated, but a few hundred years ago there was a large tin-mining industry on the moor and the tin was transported on horseback down the steep hills towards the coast. The Tavistock probably has its name from being half way between Tavistock and ... read more

Burgh Island has always fascinated me. Island are few in the U.K. and an island that is connected to the mainland at low tide and is a true island at high tide is really something special - even to a Norwegian who lives in a country with thousands of islands. Burgh Island is off Bigbury-on-sea, and the walk across the tidal "Beach" is about 300 yards. if the tide is high, there is a very special kind of bus/taxi - the Sea-Tractor, a monster machine that can carry 30 passengers at daytime and 20 when it is dark. Riding on top of this strange vehicle makes you feel you are in different world. The ride is 2 pounds per person each way. But my blog is about pubs, and on Burgh Island you find The Pilchard ... read more

4 weeks to take off and I'm not the tiniest bit anxious. Why would I be? I'm 66, in the prime of old age and I have very little idea how this trip is going to pan out. The spare room bed bedecked with 'stuff'. The bike chain oiled. The saddle polished. American visa with my pasty image staring back at me firmly stuck into my passport. What can possibly go wrong? We'll all have a better idea of exactly what can go wrong when I pitch up in Deadhorse in June 25th. Fondest regards and much love, Cyclopath aka Dr Slow.... read more

Ever since leaving New Zealand almost five and a half years ago we've wanted to go back! Five weeks whetted the taste buds enough to know that returning for a much longer period had to be, and, perhaps later than hoped, here we are starting our journey back to the land of horizontal, life-balanced, rugby-loving, kiwi folk. As ever, a trip like this takes planning... especially when taking a motorhome to cold winter climes and packing up a house for rental in order to help fund the adventure. However, our motorhome - or 'moho' - is currently going through customs checks before being delivered to compliance to be stamped self-contained and gas/electric safe according to Kiwi rules. If all goes to plan and on time, we will be collecting 'Hermie' on Wednesday. So why take your ... read more

Left Brighton this morning for our long drive (by English standards anyway) to Beesands in Devon. Stopped for lunch in Weymouth, another seaside town (city really). Beach had a little more sand then Brighton, but still plenty of rocks! Then onto Devon, started on motorways, then country roads, lanes, tracks? Where is this place? We are now driving on narrow lanes (sealed but very muddy) with hedges taller than the car on either side that seem to randomly criss cross the countryside. The signs saying the roads are for single vehicles only, with passing places mean that when we meet another car, somebody has to reverse to a place where two cars can pass (usually us). Then we come across water, and a car. They reversed (and kept reversing), we drove through the water. Eventually found ... read more

After a good breakfast, we set out to look around places near the Bristol Channel. We began at the beach of Woolacombe. This is a very popular surf beach, and in fact the only place we have seen surf lifesavers on duty. The tide seemed to be out and there was a large sandy beach. Lots of people were arriving in wetsuits with their surfboards. Many of them were also wearing gloves and boots! The were lots of surfers in the water, many catching waves. We watched for a while and then moved on. Our next stop was going to be Arlington Court, a National Trust place. The Chichester family had lived there for a long period of time- the last of them dying in 1949,when the National Trust took over the property. It is a ... read more

Today we have moved on to Ilfracombe- an English seaside resort town. The B&B where we are staying contacted us earlier in the week and asked if we could check in early as they had appointments during the afternoon. As we only had a short drive, we were happy to agree. The morning was quite wet, so we didn’t stop on our way. The forecast suggested that it would clear about 10am, but by the time we arrived in Ilfracombe (round 12) the sun was yet to make an appearance, although the rain was almost stopped. We found Marine Court, our home for the next two nights, and met Karen and Russ our hosts. They suggested a walk down to the harbour and around the lower town. We wanted to check our where our restaurant for ... read more

We began our day today close to the Lydford Country House at the Lydford Gorge. We parked at the waterfall end of the gorge in the carpark to begin our walk. The round trip is about 3 miles and goes past the White Lady waterfall and the Devils cauldron. The walk is not too difficult, although there are a few steep places with slippery stone steps. The recent rain has left a few puddles around too, so we needed to watch our feet. The stream at he bottom of the gorge has a few places where it is quite placid, and others where the rapids are pretty dangerous. The devil‘s cauldron was the most dangerous part, but was well fenced with solid guardrails. The walk took us about 2 hours, with a stop at the halfway ... read more

Today we visited two different National Trust properties as we drove on to Devon. We started at St Michael’s Mount near Marazion first thing this morning- after a fantastic breakfast at the Boskerris Hotel. We knew the causeway out to the Mount was only open until 1.45pm, so it would be better to visit in the morning. It was not far from St Ives to Marazion, and we were soon parking the car and walking out over the beach and the causeway to the island. Having visited Mont St Michel in France, and knowing the two islands were related in many ways, we wanted to see this Cornish Mount. The Mount is now managed by the National Trust, but it had a different history to that of the French one. It was originally an Abbey, but ... read more
