Well how do I describe our holiday to Namibia, two years ago when we went to South Africa I stated it was the best holiday ever, but this has been more than a holiday it has been an adventure, better than anything we have experienced in our lives. Before I came here, when people asked where we were going on holiday and I said Namibia, we got two reactions, one was ‘where’s that?’ the other was ‘oh fantastic!’ I was also often asked why, and I found this quite difficult to explain as I don’t think I really understood why; I had seen the country on television programmes like Long Way Down and Ray Mears. But me being me I think it was because at that time I did not know of anyone who had been. ... read more

Our last full day in Namibia, and a very cold night in our tent when it got down cold enough for frost to form. Due to an administrative error, another early start was on the cards as the alarm went off at 6am but we got to see a wonderful sunrise. Because we were early for breakfast we got to see the staff feeding the local bird population: we managed to count fifty lovebirds before they consumed all of the food and disappeared. We hit the road early again back to Windhoek with a quick stop at Okahandja to look at the craft market. It was OK but on approach looked more like a shanty town because of the cobbled together stalls. Browsing was not possible, as each ‘shopkeeper’ made a personal approach (the first as ... read more

Well getting towards the end of our Namibian adventure now, only two nights left before we leave to return to reality. Yesterday we saw a sign outside another lodge with signs pointing in various directions to places, we are closer to the South Pole, and Rio de-Janeirio than we are to home. Anyway today has really been a bit of a day of rest, we rose early this morning and went on the 6am nature walk for three hours. I can tell you that at 6am it is cold here in the mountains but the views as the sun rose were fantastic as we climbed over the granite boulders to the edge of the volcanic crater, along the way we were able to see all sorts of bird life as well as kudo and the dassies ... read more

I am always unsure how to start these blogs without using the word WOW. Well there we are I have used it again. Perhaps cheetahs, warthogs and black mambas would be a better way to start, with a bit of low-range 4x4 stuff to get to our accommodation for the next couple of nights. We left Etosha early this morning to start knocking off the miles of a busy day, we were treated to tarmac roads for the first leg of our journey to Outjo where we stopped at Etotwongo Lodge where they have an internet cafe so we could post the last three days of blogs, and a stop for fuel and cash before pushing on again on tarmac to Africat Foundation at Okonjima, where they have just started giving day visitor tours this August. ... read more

When we got back from dinner last night we went over to the waterhole to see what was about and we were treated to seeing seven black rhino drinking. We thought that was lucky enough when suddenly I spotted a huge owl swoop silently in and land on the tree behind us. What a fantastic evening. Today was another day on safari self-driving around this vast park and we have been exploring the middle section. Once you are off the main highway and go out to the waterholes the roads get fairly rough so we were again thankful we had the 4x4. At our first stop this morning we saw a large pride of lions wandering across to have a drink, before settling themselves down for a rest. We also saw vultures in the area: probably ... read more

Wow what a day! Our first day on safari was even better than we hoped. An early start this morning to make the most of the day as we were out of the camp by 8am this morning and before many minutes we were seeing all kinds of wildlife. Meg has bought a bird book and has turned into a ‘twitcher’ extraordinaire overnight as each bird we see has to be marked off in the book: I am waiting for her to buy an anorak! I won’t attempt to name all of the birds we have seen, but there has been a lot including numerous birds of prey. Perhaps the most remarkable was the secretary birds which were almost as large as the nearby springbok. Before we left this morning there was a hornbill that took ... read more

This was another day on the road today as we headed on to our next stop Etosha, but before we headed out we had to say goodbye to Camp Kipwe. Last night after we had gone to bed the camp was visited by one of the elephants, he is a regular caller and the camp staff have named him Oscar. When we got up this morning the only evidence that he had been around was footprints and one uprooted palm tree. We said goodbye to new friends as we left, and headed off to our first planned stop, the petrified forest. This is an area of fossilised trees from around 1.5 million years ago. They think that they were washed down rivers from central Africa in a great flood and they were then covered in sediment ... read more

Before we say what we have been doing today a quick word on yesterday evening: when we got back to our lodge from the main block after dinner last night we stood on the porch admiring the stars and we were joined by a bat in silent flight swooping round catching the insects attracted by the porch light. Today we have had a day off from driving as we let the guides take the strain. This morning we were up early, very early to go out and see if we could find the desert adapted elephant. On the way we saw the usual springbok and ostrich, we also saw steenbok which is a very small antelope and loads of different birds. Our driver was very good at mimicking the bird calls to get them to sing. ... read more

Another day on the road today so not a great deal to say. We hit the salt road north again after breakfast. Not far out of Swakopmund is a small community called Wlotzkasbaken that we had passed yesterday. It comprises lots of colourful houses and caught our eye yesterday, so when we got back a bit of research informed us that this town lives off grid, as it were, generating its own electricity, storing is own water and recycling it waste. On our way back north today we had a quick drive through and took some more pictures. Just after we turned off the salt road we came across an area of the desert that was cordoned off for filming. We know that two days ago when we went kayaking that they are filming Mad Max ... read more

Well we’ve just got back from the Messum Crater, a round trip of 393km taking nearly 9 hours, but well worth the effort. The crater is 35km from the nearest road and 20km across with no roads or signs just tracks made by the previous vehicles to visit. We hit the salt road north along the skeleton coast towards Henties Baai. Just before the town is the wreck of the Zeila, an Angolan fishing trawler that was wrecked on the coast four years ago. We called into Henties Baai where we made a quick stop to purchase the guide to the Messum Crater. Then we pushed on north with the Brandberg Mountain on the horizon, until just past Cape Cross before turning off road for the 40km run across the dirt track to the crater edge. ... read more
