There is a rather significant football match for our Spanish hosts tomorrow evening. Currently a warm up game going on over our tent. Excitment is high and expectation even higher. We are staying put in the moderately sized town of Sahagun for the big game as it feels the best place to watch the Spanish emotions in full flow. During our year in the Spanish speaking world achieving decent fluency in their language is one of the primary objectives. Today showed signs of a solid start to this endeavour. Building on our smooth conversational exchange about the finer points of our camping kit with a four year old two days ago we raised the bar even higher today. Having a late breakfast (toasted bread and olive oil must be tried) a Dutch couple had to reply ... read more

This past Friday was our first excursion of the trip. We went to a winery and 2 castles. Lets talk about the winery first. It was the more boring place I´ve been too. First of all, it was 11 in the morning and second of all, she did not have many grape plants. I was expecting Napa Valley or something, but it was a let down. Then after an hour of explaining how to make wine (basically cool it and keep it at the right temperature...who didn´t know that?), we tasted it 3 different types that they made. I guess I´m not a wine person, because I really didn´t like any of it. But a lot of people bought some to take home to their parents, or just drink while they´re here. After the most boring ... read more

When I last left you I had just arrived at my hostel in Madrid and was waiting to get into my room. After settling in I spent the whole afternoon in the incredible Reina Sofia museum. While boasting some of the 'greats', their collection was predominantly from Spanish artists. Picasso and Dali were two artists who were heavily represented. In fact, Reina Sofia is the home of Picasso's famous Guernica, which is so powerful to behold in person. It has been given a room to itself, which is needed to hold the crowds that it draws. I thought that the two rooms on either side were actually more interesting, containing Picasso's studies and preparatory drawings for the masterpiece. To see the development of the symbolism and the ways in which he chose to portray grief are ... read more

We left Malaga airport this morning and headed out for Barcelona. Our time in Torremolinos was fast and fun. Our tour to Granada and the Alhambra was so interesting - last stronghold of the Moors and so much of their artistic and creative endeavors still intact. We had fun with the other people on the tour, from all over the world. Our guide spoke four languages. Terry had the most trouble with a gentleman from Australia and his very think accent. Washington Irving shamed the Spanish government into preserving the Albambra as a national treasure - 1800's - and we're thankful he did! We saw the residences of the sultan and the sultana and the haram. About some of the food, which has been divine: we've enjoyed tapas everywhere, but some of the greatest were the ... read more

So after being told at LAX that I was on standby for my flight, a very long 24 hour turnaround of missing an entire day from being in the air and jumping 9 time zones, not really sleeping for the past 36 hours, and the two year old next to me from Cameroon that tantrumed the entire first hour of the flight, I am safe and sound at the hotel in Barcelona and waiting for Cheryl´s flight to come in. She should be landing any minute, but unfortunately the free shuttle stopped 15 minutes ago, so she will have to take a cab. Tomorrow we get up early and catch an 8:45 train to Montpellier. First week will be mostly about the wedding for Agnes and Mitch. More to come! ... read more

(warning: This blog is going to be pretty long since I’m in an airport bored right now hehe). Seeing as this was my last day in Barcelona and thinking my train left at 9am, I woke up at 6am packed and ready to head to Venice. The whole time I was quite baffled that an over night train would leave so early, but then again, I figured Venice might be farther than I anticipated. After checking out, and heading to the metro, I checked my schedule again and noticed that the train that left on this particular day departed at 8:15 pm errr 20:15 for those outside the U.S. haha. I was kind of pissed that I didn’t notice that the night before because I could’ve been sleeping and getting a full nights rest instead. Since ... read more

Yesterday I managed to visit two of the most major tourist attractions of southern Spain. First, in Cordoba, I spent time at la Mezquita, the third largest mosque in the world & the oldest building in day-to-day use in Europe! The construction of the building began in 786 and was finished in the 16th century. It was initially built as a mosque, however, three additions later it became a Christian cathedral was built in the middle. It was amazing to see the combination of arab & christian faiths as well as the mix of roman, arab, and even baroque architecture. In the main area of the mezquita, there are 856 white & red columns, supporting arches throughout! AMAZING! I left Cordoba and took a bus to Granada. The trip was about 2 hours and 40 minutes, ... read more

Back in June, Mario and I were flown to the south of Spain, Seville, for his first bonsai workshop. Our friend and organisor of the bonsai workshop, Sankofa, picked us up from the airport around midnight. The temperature was around 32 degrees celcius! Very hot! The bonsai workshop was held in the cafeteria of a zoo! The were also a lot of bonsai at the zoo. One day the guy in charge of the zoo showed us around his second home. He touched the animals without any fear, even the puma and dingoes, and spoke to them as if they were humans. Apparently many of the animals were ex circus and animal actors! One morning Mario took a walk with Gina the cheeky chimpanzee. The owner said that I had to stay away because Gina loves ... read more
