Well, this was definitely the trip of a lifetime. It was also a huge trip and I will expand more on it later, but since it took a while to load the pictures and I just don't even know where to start on what I did and how it went; I will just post the pictures now for you and can explain more later. I know you'll just look at the pictures anyway. jamie-the world traveler oh, p.s. I went to Rome, then Dublin, and finally London all in ten days time.... read more

Well, my plans changed just a bit today... I spent the morning at the alcazar de los reyes cristianos which is a massive castle building of islamic architecture, but was designed and built by christians! I´ve included a picture of the building. The entire city of Cordoba is a mixture of arab, christian, and jewish heritage. I think there is much to learn from this combination. I had planned to go to Granada tomorrow morning, but as its turning out, I won´t go until evening time. I´m just really enjoying the chance to feel out the southern culture here in Cordoba. It is another extremely hot day. I´m going to bike up to a river in a while with some natives. Apparently it´s this amazing place that you can swim and enjoy the countryside. I´m pretty ... read more

For those of you who don't know but are interested in knowing, in a few days I will start a two-month trip south of granada. And I mean literally that: I will travel by public transport from Granada (in Spain) to Ouagadougu (Burkina-Faso). Along the way I hope to visit Mauritania, Senegal, Mali and Burkina-Faso. This blog is mainly aimed to inform my family that I am still alive, fellow travellers where I am at the moment, and anybody interested what I'm up to. So what's the current status? Still at home trying to sort out some details about the trip, like this travelblog. Don't know how often I'll be able to update it, or in which language I will do so, but I hope very and in many. See, one-way dialog about a trip is ... read more

Geo: 43.3172, -2.67896Up early to catch a bus back to Bilbao - no eggs this morning, no time! I stuck with toast, milk, and a pale imitation of Nutella. I said my goodbyes - only Rob, Pervez, and Angela were up. I'm going to miss the nights at the tapas bars. I laughed to myself as I thought about a funny incident last night - I told the Aussie girls about the "Spanish Lookaway" maneuver which drove me crazy the first time in Spain. It's very simple - it's looking up, tilting the head to the side, flashing a radiant Spanish smile, and giggling while looking down and away, and brushing the hair behind the ear. Upon hearing this, the Aussie girls started mimicking the gesture while saying "Hola!" - pretty funny and I must admit ... ... read more

Hola, Hope you are enjoying this blog as much as I am in writing it. Right now we are getting ready to go out for the fiesta. The fireworks don’t start until midnight!! I just can’t get used to this. My roommate wants to stay but I’m sure I’ll be exhausted. So here is a little about the food and stuff. My host mom cooks very well, I have had a shrimp/ham/peas and rice type of stir fry which was very good. I’ve had chicken, and also some short baby ribs today without the bbq sauce of course. I think tonight I had some type of egg tostada thing with sausage in it. She makes some great green beans thing. Overall I’m eating less than I did in the states. The diet is just so much ... read more

By now we were deep into Andalucía, the most southerly point we would reach during this final leg of our year out - it was time for a holiday within a holiday. I can almost hear the howls of derision from here but all this travelling takes it out of you and, let’s be honest, who doesn’t like to put their feet up and sun themselves by a pool every so often? Angela’s dad, Martin and his wife Sue live close to Marbella and kindly allowed us to stay with them for just short of a week. We did almost nothing but chill out in unbroken sunshine cooled by copious bottles of rose wine and delicious homemade margaritas. I say we did “almost nothing” as Martin and Sue are having a pergola built at the bottom ... read more

Well, the arabic influence is stronger than I had anticipated in Andalucia. The buildings are amazing... it doesn´t feel anything like what I know of ¨Spain¨here... but it is still very beautiful! The sky is so impressive. I did not see a cloud all day long. NOT ONE! The sun just went down (it´s 11:30pm) and the stars are amazing. Nothing like a beautiful night´s sky from the roof of a building! By the way, I just checked the temperature... it´s still over 90 degrees! (Dad, you would hate this place!!) Don´t worry, there is air conditioning! I had arabic food tonight for dinner. My hostel-mate is from Brazil and she took me to this great little place with wraps... it´s called de kebab or something like that. Really delicious! Well, it´s been another long day. ... read more

Monday night was supposed to be the start of la fiesta de San Juan with bands and fireworks, but it started to POUR!!! I can not explain to you how crazy town was. Everyone was scattering and running as if they'd die. It was definatly an experience. I ran 15 minutes home in the pouring rain. Everything I was wearing was soaked: hoodie, tshirt, bra, capri's, underwear, purse. I had to wring my clothes out. My mom was having a party for the fireworks since we get a really good view of the aquaduct from the house, so I ran into the house soaking and everyone in the basement was staring at me laughing. They were all dry, and I was just soaked. Ah what a moment. I got home around 11:30 pm and my mom ... read more
