according to my travelblog page statistics over the last two and a half years, i’ve written over 52,000 words, added over 500 photos and had over 12,000 views of my travel pages! so now, how am i supposed to sum up all my travel experiences in one final blog?! i have a lot of amazing memories to look back on and such a lot to be thankful for... i'm so pleased that i had the courage and determination to trade my security and stability of life back home for an adventure into the unknown! i have always felt that reaping the biggest rewards come from setting yourself the biggest challenges possible, so moving to the other side of the world on my own was certainly high up there for me : ) i will never forget ... read more

29.11.09 I'm in Africa! Only one day in and what a total overload on the senses... the dusty, noisy streets bustling with people waving and shouting 'how are you?', the loud music blaring from the matatu vans with the money-collectors hanging out of the door, the choking combination of car fumes and dust and the stench of decaying rubbish... what a start indeed! So, I arrived into Nairobi bright and early and was met by Oliver who took me on a bit of a hair-raising drive back to his house - and I thought the drivers in Vietnam were scary! He pointed out a few giraffes in the distance, which was cool. As it was so early, the other volunteers were still asleep so I carried on reading my book 'I dreamed of Africa'. Once everyone ... read more

Yet another exciting year of living abroad has quickly come to an end! My final few months at work were very busy and one of the scariest moments involved mumbling my way through around 40 parents meetings... in Spanish! However, some of the more FUN things that I did in the last few months were... - enjoy a day out to Isla Magica (the theme park!) with rakhi and joel where i was persuaded to go on one of the biggest and scariest roller coasters i have ever been on! - dance the night away at a music festival, featuring the go team and de la soul as some of the big names (no, i'd never heard of them before the night either!) - chill out at the water park, aquopolis, a few times when the ... read more

Oh yikes, another few months have gone by without a travel blog update! I just don’t seem to have the free time here that I had in Japan! So, another summary of recent highlights is in order methinks: In February, the newly engaged lovebirds, Charlotte and Dave, came out to visit me for a few days and we had a FAB time soaking up the Sevillian sun! On their first day, we had a lovely stroll around the old santa cruz area and the cathedral. We found a yummy place to enjoy some tapas and then I dropped them off at the arabian baths while I set off for work. Because I had planned such a precise schedule for their holiday here, I think they were very glad to make the most of the 4 hours ... read more

i've just been told by travelblog that it has been 90 days since i last published a blog! yikes, i didn't realise that i hadn't updated everyone on my adventures since then! to be honest, i'll probably find it quite difficult to remember every single thing i've done for the last 2 / 3 months but the main highlights have been ... - a visit from my parents, sister and brother-in-law who came out to stay for a week in october. we enjoyed doing all the seville touristy things (including watching an amazing flamenco show) and also spent a beautiful day on the beach in cadiz - a few weekends away in the beautiful aracena countryside to stay with our lovely scottish landlady! although the last time we went to stay, she was on a business ... read more

Another week has whizzed by at school and I’m getting more of a handle on what I’m supposed to be doing in my classes… I’m even starting to like the teenagers - well, a little bit anyway! We’ve just had a long weekend and so enjoyed a few day trips with Tim and Silvia, 2 of the other teachers here who we get along really well with. We spent Saturday in Cordoba and visited the beautiful Mezquita and Alcazar (castle). It was very relaxing to stroll alongside the river and explore the narrow cobbled streets. On Monday, we spent an afternoon in Carmona and ate lunch in one of the old castles… it was situated at the top of a hill and so overlooked the city - stunning views. We all had a delicious meal apart ... read more

I had my induction at the school about a week and a half ago… there were 5 other teachers starting at the same time as me and there’s about 25 teachers altogether at the school. We had lots of meetings with different teachers about the timetables and routines for each class we have… our heads were just buzzing by the end of it all! The next day, I only had 2 classes - with teenagers though… yikes! My first class was HORRIBLE! The boys were lovely and really made an effort to speak in English but the girls were full of attitude and were rolling their eyes at me every few minutes - arghhh! I can’t wait until the next class as I’m going to split up the chatty girls and make them sit next to ... read more

Another week has flown by and I’ve been making the most of my free time... consuming plenty of ice cream and sunning myself basically! I’m already starting to get my bearings around the centre and not rely quite so heavily on my trusty little map! Earlier in the week, Phil and I took a trip to Ikea to stock up on a few bits and bobs which would make our apartment a little more homely... we set ourselves a budget but obviously went over this... by almost double! But hey, our flat looks great now and we really love coming back to it after a day out... it’s normally quite peaceful around here but we live right next to a little church which rings its bells at ridiculously early times every morning! We’ve been eating out ... read more
