We finally made it into San Sebastian after the situation from hell in France. Stinky and sleepless, buzzing off a double espresso we talked about the funny situation that happened the night before. San Sebastian, a spanish beach town, was freezing. Not as cold as Switzerland or parts of Germany but it was up there. We didn't have any expectations for it since we didn't originally plan on going there. We found it to be a laid back town with a lot of cool stuff to offer though. We spent time walking around the beach looking for surf and found some, but it was small and the water was like 40 degrees. We walked up to a hill and took some cool panoramics of the city for the blog. Getting around Spain was a lot easier ... read more

My advent calendar this year is Winnie the Pooh, a gift from Mary Geisler from when she and her friend Christy came to visit us last month on their way back from Japan. Laurel's is disney princess themed. We are thrilled about them. And not just because it's free chocolate, but because it's free chocolate that reminds us every day that it is Christmas season. Also the most wonderful reminder of Christmas season: My very first care package from home. It was the earliest Christmas I'd ever had. The door man gave it to me and I ran up five flights of stairs with the same enthusiasm that I have coming down the stairs every Christmas (I only tripped once). Now, Dad had told me I was getting movies, and so that was what I had ... read more

Hola!!! Hope everyone is well back at home. We have been spending sometime on the coast (Costa Del Sol). Spent sometime in the mountains near Granada but the temp was droppng to 1/2 degrees at night. Bought a big quilt from Carrefour and some warm p.js for James then came down to coast and haven't used them! Temp rose to 25 deg in the day, not falling below 15 at night! Spent sometime looking at the Casa Ceuvos (cave houses) of Grananda. These houses are abundant in this region and quite fascinating. Some look like proper houses with extensions on the front, others are literally a rock with a couple of doors and windows at the front but inside can contain 14 or 15 rooms, dug out from the mountain they sit in. They are ecologically ... read more

I hope everyone had an over stuffing thanks giving experience…. ;) struck homesick for me when I wasn’t able to participate in the massive consumption of mashed potatoes and turkey and catch up with extended family and friends. Since Spain does not celebrate thanks giving, our director organized a thanks giving feast at a restaurant in Segovia. 32 of us sat at 1 long dining table as the waiters brought out 3 enormous turkeys and carved them. It was pretty delicious on a serious note… not gonna lie. November has really picked up and I can’t believe I have less than 2 weeks left. How crazy! Earlier this month I went on an excursion to Andalucía, the southern region of Spain. We viewed La Mezquita, a mosque in Cordoba which was absolutely gorgeous. Part of the ... read more

ARGH... ok, start off, very nice, arrived in the morning, went to my hostel easily and settled down a bit, I doubled check my time on the internet for the Alhambra, then went off around the city. Walked around the Catholic quarter, the latin quarter, then the Arabic quarter... didnt seem as big as the map! haaa....t was very nice, reminded me a lot of Morocco...coz there are lots of North African here... The main cathedral was very nice, and next to it is a gothic chapel....the mix of the different styles made the gothic one stand out!! WAHAHAAAA..een tho the cathedral was larger...... lots of monasteries around.... The arabic quarter was high up on the hill.........so high!!!! the walk was....ok.......the markets and narrow streets up there got me lost for a while!!!! Nice view of ... read more

From the moment we stepped off our 1p Ryan Air flight we were greeted with clear skies and friendly greetings of ‘Hola!’ Even the customs officials were welcoming (asking if I was Spanish as there are a few variations of the name Ariana in Spain, then looking slightly disappointed when he realised I couldn’t understand him very well, let alone return the conversation with much more than ‘no- gracias’). My language skills improved as the days went on however and the few words and phrases I learnt in Spanish classes while studying in Japan came flooding back (albeit with a slightly Japanised pronunciation…). Granada is in a part of southern Spain called Andalucia. The Moors invaded from North Africa in 700 odd AD and a Moorish quarter still remains in the west of the city to ... read more

Saturday in Barcelona. Wow. I can't believe it is only our third day here. I went for a quick run down La Rambla to the beach. The buildings on the coast were beautiful and very ornate. I finally feel like I know my way around the city a little bit. One of our goals with our whole time here in Europe was to teach the kids that they can get around any city if they can read a map and that if they are calm and logical they can get their way into or out of most situations. I think this trip has really highlighted their acquisition of some of these skills. Again, Emma astounds me with her ability to recognize places. We were about to walk right by our street one day when she pointed ... read more

I just wrote a huge blog about Spain, and it got deleted. Bahh. *shakes fist at British internet* Anywho, I'll try it again. Barcelona was gorgeous. It was sweatshirt weather. We were right next to the Mediterranean Sea. There were mountains. And the people I went with were very easy going. It was a lovely weekend away from London. We left our hotel around 2:45 am on Friday morning in order to catch a 75 minute bus ride to our airport. By the time, we got there, we only had 40 minutes to check-in and go through security. Three of the boys out of our group of eight (four boys and four girls) did online check-in and were bragging about not having to stand in line. So, they got to go right through security and up ... read more

A cheesy title? Yes. But it was entirely appropriate for our day of Gaudi hunting. Two weeks before we went to Spain I did a little homeschooling lesson with the girls on the letter G and on Antoni Gaudi in particular. I thought they might appreciate this rather interesting architect and it would also help to get them excited about another big trip. It worked and their excitement was unabashed during our whole day searching for Gaudi buildings. I was up with Emma & Eliza around 7:30. The girls had yogurt, muffins and oranges for breakfast. I took a short run and got everyone dressed. In typical travel fashion we then went out for our second breakfast at a local cafe where we fully enjoyed the coffee and pastries. We walked to La Rambla, which is ... read more
