This weekend I spent some of the best days I have had in Spain in the company of Americans. few foreigners and I were welcomed into their Thanksgiving celebrations, far from the U.S. and our families, we made our own international Thanksgiving. And I would just like to take this opportunity to apologise for all the times I have generalised about American stupidity, or ignorance or any other Stereotype that the whole world enjoys loading onto the U.S.A. Apart from a certain girl from North Dakota who insisted on the being the exception that proved the rule, all the Americans I met this weekend were sweethearts. Warm, hospitable, funny, gracious, intelligent and open-minded, all of them able to be objective on their rather interesting reputation. Now, Im not saying that I agree with alot of U.S. ... read more

Sorry it has been so long since my last post. So much has happened in the month past..I'll try to recall all that I have done: I did the Camino de Santiago, which was really fun. I did not get any blisters on the 60km hike but I had some bruised heels for a few days afterward. It was great to get out of the city and breathe in the fresh clean air of the great outdoors. We had beautiful weather everyday, and I got to see many farms and the countryside of northern Spain. (the Galicia region) Two wknds ago I went to Barcelona with my program and we went into a history museum-which was really cool-we got to see a piece of the roman history and what has been uncovered under the city from ... read more

We were in madrid almost two years back and I never quite got around to putting my ecstasy to something more readable!!! Well 2 years later, here I am trying to put it all down.. It was my first visit to Europe and it was an interesting perspective. Not going to write about specific places, but the overall difference in culture of a "western" country as compared to US was a pleasant surprise. The richness of architecture, the messages of history and tradition that most places had was wonderful. I loved the way the women dressed. I haven't been to Paris, so I woudn't know better but having seen the americans and UK women, this was a fresh breath of air and afcourse the women were extremely good looking...And we did do a fair share of ... read more

A funny thing happened on the way to Ronda...we were sitting on the comfortable "fast train" from Seville to our next cycling point in the hill town of Ronda, and Kate idley pulled out the LP guide and started paging through the section on Granada. "Oh, too bad we're not going to see Granada and the famous Alhambra castle. It sounds beautiful, right at the base of the Sierra Nevada." A few minues of discussion ensued, and so rather than transferring to the Granada-Ronda train, we instead transferred to the Ronda-Granada train going the opposite direction, and that's how we ended up spending a couple of days in in the beautiful city of Granada. And we did indeed see the Alhambra Palace, made famous (apparently - I didn't focus much on literature...) by Washington Irving's "Tales ... read more

Following a few days spent in Valencia we got the Renfe north to Barcelona, or at least we thought that is what we were doing. The trip to Barcelona started without incident. The train stopped a few times to let passengers on and off as we made our way north along the Mediterranean. All the passengers were passing the time reading or conversing with one another. Then we stopped in Tarragona, a town about an hour south of Barcelona. This stop was somehow different than the others in that every single passenger stood up and walked off the train. So, we decided to do the same. At this point we realized that we were all being ushered across the train station, out the door, and into buses which evidently would take us the rest of the ... read more

Happy late Thanksgiving!! We arrived to Madrid yesterday around 3pm. The airport was such a hassle; we couldn't find our baggage claim, walked around the airport 10 times, no one spoke English. Took 3 different trains to get the hotel, FINALLY got settled in at like 5pm. I think we were both kind of grumpy and tired at that point! In any case, we met up with Greg (whom I met traveling in Munich) at 7pm and headed out on the town. We are staying in Puerta Del Sol, which is a pretty central location with lots going on. The main plaza has some pretty fountains and statues, and is bustling with people. I think most of our night was spent wandering and bar hopping, and getting lost. However, we did pop into some cool spots ... read more

Last weekend I spent some quality time with nature at a mountain pass called ¨La boca del asno¨ or ¨The Ass´s Mouth¨. Paula´s parents, Mamen and Juan Carlos, their best friend Maribel, and myself took a bus with a mycologist (mushroom specialist) to the Sierra north of Madrid. When we arrived, we were instructed to pick all the mushrooms we could find, meet up with the specialist and the other 40 people on the trip, and he would classify all that we had collected and organize them in groups of edible and toxic species. We would then have a delicious meal of...you guessed it! MUSHROOMS! (We all crossed our fingers that he REALLY knew what he was doing.) This, at least, was what was supposed to happen. Unfortunately, when we arrived, I had a little problem. ... read more

Alsof ik zo even ... read more
