Hello! Tanto tiempo sin escribiros (so much time without writing you all!) Well, I finally have a few novel things to write about, so I figured I would try to inform you about what we crazy Americans have been up to over in Spain lately. I celebrated Halloween in Valladolid. Not too many people here celebrate Halloween, but there were a few españoles dressed up. Many of the bars we went to were decorated & the bartenders dressed up, so we didn´t feel totally out of place. However, it was not as spectacular as Halloween on State St, for example. I was a 'diablesa,' es decir I bought a pair of devil horns & a red mask. Seems like I should be able to use these items for Carnaval which is much more celebrated here in ... read more

Buenos dias, ¿cómo estais? ¡“Porqué no te callas”! (why don’t you shut up!!!) that’s what the King of Spain told the Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez Frias to do during a conference in Chile. This sentence became famous across whole Spain just in a few hours and now there are songs and ringtones about it!!! Girona & Sant Felui de Guixols I arrived at Girona airport, where I took the bus to Girona station. There Paul was waiting for me and we went home. I knew Paul because we studied together in Rotterdam, but he did Mathematics. He also went to Curacao, where we did our practice at the MIL (stage), which was almost 5 years ago now! Paul is living for more than 1 year in Spain and is doing professional cycling in a team from ... read more

Altea is a lovely town between beaches and mountains. One can easily get lost in the old centre of town where all houses are painted white, contrasting with the blue sky, the sierra's rocky landscape and the greenish blue ocean. The streets were mostly empty and silent at this time of the year, rendering the clean façades a feeling of abandonement and purity. On the contrary to the large, predominantly English and German populated resorts of Calpe and Benidorm where real estate has gone mad, coughing up disgusting skyscrapers which dot the whole sea front, Altea seems to have better building regulations and manages to integrate the old and the new more harmoniously. Not saying it's any cheaper here though! Economy seems to thrive on the expensiveness of land around here. You can find hundreds of ... read more

We had read that the train trip to Ronda was gorgeous, but it was more convenient for us to catch the bus from the main bus terminus in Seville. It was a very pleasant and easy journey and we got a cursory glimpse of the beautiful yet harsh country that is Andalucía. At times it reminded us of the dusty brown and pale green Australian landscapes and I think I even spotted a few eucalypt type trees, but the similarity ends there. The little villages built into the hillsides, the bountiful olive groves, and the goats and donkeys roaming the farms leave you in no doubt that you are in southern Spain. Ronda is one of Andalucía’s famous pueblos blancos (white villages) and probably one of the most incredible looking places I have ever been to. ... read more

*Camera still not working right, so sorry for the small amount of photos Last Thursday Iñigo picked me up from Segovia and we drove three hours north to La Rioja, Spain’s best-known wine region. We met up with his best friend Tiri and his girlfriend Alejandra, and another couple, Chema and Alicia at our two-floor suite at the hotel Los Augustinos. The hotel was located in the little hilltop town of Haro that overlooks the Río Tirón and the Río Ebro and is surrounded by some of the most renowned bodegas in Spain. We were all pretty tired from the drive, so we opened a bottle of wine and a great conversation. The next morning we set out to explore the charming 10th-century architecture and exquisite restaurants of Haro. As we hopped from bar to bar, ... read more

Marleen was vijf dagen eerder in Granada toegekomen. Toen ik haar wou bellen hoorde ik dat haar telefoonnummer niet klopte. Haar bereiken zat er dus niet in, tenzij met rooksignalen. Dat deed toch wel even vies. Weten dat je eigenlijk volledig alleen in ... read more

Since we had trouble finding computers riding along the gulf coast last July, this travelblog has been severely neglected. I apologize, and I have SO much to update on here. Unfortunately right now we´re in a really expensive internet cafe in Sevilla. So here´s a VERY brief overview of what we´ve been up to: We flew into Shannon Ireland in the end of July, then rode to Dublin. We lived and worked as courier in Dublin for three months, just trying to save some money. Then we got the ferry to England, and headed into London. We stayed there for almost a week with my family (Eileen, Tim, Emma, and Matt). From there we got the ferry to the Hook of Holland, and headed into Amsterdam. From Amsterdam we rode through Rotterdam and then into Brussels ... read more

In the final stretch of my trip and a little sad to be leaving. I have one weekend left and I am thinking about going to Montserrat. The TEFL course has been quite an experience and has really convinced me as to how much I want to teach. I had a great class today with seven students! Normally, it has been about 2-4 students. So this was great. After class, the other teachers and I went out for Indian curry and drinks before heading home. I am pretty much done with the class and we will go out and celebrate tomorrow when we will be officially complete with the course. This has ben such a great experience and I have met so many interesting, cultured people from all over the world. I will get pictures posted ... read more

Well, we just had another long weekend here in Spain. It is amazing the amount of holidays that this country celebrates. There have been long weekend 3 out of the last four weeks and there are two more in the next four weeks. Anyways, we took advantage of the time off to check out Granada. Granada is about a 5hr bus ride to the south from Madrid and possesses the Alhambra, one of the world's most popular attractions. Kristi, Nina, Sara and I hopped on the bus about 9am Friday morning. This is one thing that seems so different for me...in the states we never hop on the bus to get away for the weekend, at least I don't. It is not the most comfortable mode of transportation, but it is much more relaxing than having ... read more

With every place I see in Spain I just keep falling more and more in love with the country. Two weekends ago I went to Barcelona with the students in my program for four days. This cosmopolitan coastal city, with its superb seaside views, incredible architecture, and cultural scene has been my favorite Spanish city to date. We were blessed with benign weather the entire weekend, and from our hotel on Las Ramblas, the famous promenade in the heart of the city, we were able to walk just about anywhere. We started the visit with a walk along the three parts of Las Ramblas: (1) Rambla dels Ocells (Boulevard of the Birds), which is filled with vendors of caged birds, (2) Rambla dels Flors (Boulevard of the Flowers), which is filled with bizarre street performers and, ... read more
