Hello everyone, In response to everyone's e-mails regarding my recent excusion to the city of Toledo, I have decided that it will perhaps be easier and more convenient for me just to write about it on here, so that everyone may read and it will prevent me from having to monotonously type the same story multiple times :-). On Sunday, I awoke around 8:00 am and made for the metro station, where I took the underground about 9 stops south to Estacion Sur de Autobuses (South Bus Station), where the majority of intercity, national, and even international busses depart from. After purchasing my tickets, my bus departed almost immediately, and I arrived in Toledo about an hour later. I found Toledo to be a very intriguing little city. It, like Avila and Segovia, is very ancient ... read more

Well, my first big adventure trip was a success and a blast! Spain was great- and Barcelona is a fun, exciting city! My travel buddy this trip was this guy Travis. We got into the city in the afternoon on Tuesday, and had 2 full days after that. The first day we walked around for a bit and kinda got our bearings for the city. It actually took us a while to find the hostel, but it was nice. Except for the fact that the women running it had creepy, fat cats that lurked around outside of our room! We were right by Las Ramblas though, which is the big famous street there. At first I thought the city was much larger than it ended up feeling. I mean it is a huge city, but we ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Sierra Nevada November 12th 2007

Hola from Spain! Hope all is well back at home. Here is our latest update! After leaving Italy we travelled very quickly through France and arrived on the South coast of Spain. Stopped over in Loret de Mar on the Costa Brava (like Blackpool) and then tried to stopover in Benidorm (James wanted some fish and chips!) unbelievably ALL the campsites were FULL! Full of Brits and Germans on longstays, eventually we found a place in between Benidorm and Alicante (we discovered why the sites fill up most offer 60% plus discounts of stays over 28 days.) We then had a very long and winding drive through the Sierra Nevada to the Alpujarra mountains were we have stayed in an old mill house for the last 8 days. A beautiful place in a lovely area which ... read more

My introduction to Barcelona was somewhat sketchy, but that was largely due to my own poor planning. Standout topics I had neglected when doing my homework on the city included where the airport was, how to get from there into town, and from the middle of town, how to find my hostel. Figuring that knowing the name of the hostel and what area it was in would be enough was a gross miscalculation on my part. When I got to Barceloneta metro station I realised plan B (finding an internet cafe and checking the address of my hostel) was out the window as pretty much everything was closed. Regardless, internet cafes were few and far between on the ground. In the end I found where I was supposed to be after over two hours of walking ... read more

I was in Madrid for a 3S Project Consortium Meeting. I have been managing this project as well due to the normal project manager on maternity. I saw a Picasso exhibition that was fantastic. I am not an art guy, but it was really cool to see an actual Picasso. "Guernica" (see pic) was huge, took up most of the wall. Now I can understand why some people go to these things, you could really look at it and keep seeing different things. The entire exhibition was really interesting.... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Seville November 12th 2007

Seville is the capital of Andalucía, and the center of bullfighting and flamenco...none of the former and lots of the latter for us thanks! We arrived at Seville’s San Pablo Airport late at night and the intense haze of cigarette smoke just outside the airport doors befuddled us into catching the wrong bus into town. It wasn’t a major disaster, and it was really a little lucky as we wouldn’t have otherwise caught a taxi and experienced a ride with a craaazy-wanna-be stunt driver. The hotel was only three blocks away as the crow flies but apparently 10 minutes via all the very small crazy one-way lanes. The driver did every possible thing he could to scare the life out of the travellers on their first night in Seville...and just when I thought he was going ... read more

Spain.... The entire country felt a little like a stopover...we hadn't researched Spain much, so we basically arrived without a plan at all. Madrid was made special by Duilio, a lighting designer that we met for the first time there. We had a great time touring the town in the late evening with him, sampling Tapas and drinking just a little beer. We hopped a train to Barcelona, drawn there by many recommendations from travelers everywhere. We loved the place. There is a very positive energy in the city, with lively streets at all times of the day and none of the anonymous feeling that you get in a large city center. We happened to be there for the Barcelona boat show, which was a great excuse to wander around and check out all kinds of ... read more

Europe » Spain » Catalonia » Girona » Figueres November 11th 2007

Yesterday we took a day trip up to Figueres to the place where Salvador Dali was born, where he died in 1989, and also where his museum was built in 1974. He was quite an intelligent, eccentric, and egotistical man(slash)aristic genious. He was quite proud and a bit arrogant about his accomplishments. I love this quote,by Salvador Dali himself... "Each morning when I awake, I experience again a supreme pleasure - that of being Salvador Dali." or another one..."I don't do drugs - I am drugs." Well looking at some of his art you would think he did take drugs though. But, he allowed much of the subconcious thoughts come through in his art. His biggest inspiration was Gala, his lover and later wife. She is in many of his paintings and he was quite obsessed ... read more

Europe » Spain » Valencian Community » Valencia November 10th 2007

What a warm atmosphere! What a beautiful city! Ok, I'm not here to talk about cities. My thing of the moment is open landscapes, fields, mountains, little villages... But how can I resist the charms of Valencia? Its surprisingly glamorous old town and its fabulous modern complexes! I fell in love with this place. Almost at first sight. It took me a little while to tune in, to let the images sink my pupils. The huge squares. The ancient buildings so well looked after. Then I felt the warmth, the jolly pace people seem to move at - not too slowly though absolutely not in a hurry either. An amazing old market with juicy mediterranean and African fruit, reasonably priced. A urban haven! With beaches where I spent a whole afternoon sunbathing: in the middle of ... read more

Hello all of you out there that are still reading my blog! I am giving you an update finally! So as you read in a previous blog, you saw I went to a little town south of Spain (El Puerto de Santa Maria) for a Spanish immersion course. It was a great experience and I picked up a good amount of Spanish since I was immersed in it. The school only allowed Spanish and I was staying with a family who spoke Spanish. Also, the other students wanted to practice so outside of class they spoke Spanish. It was fun, but quite exhausting. I left El Puerto on the 13th to take a train to Barcelona. I headed to Barcelona to take a one month TEFL course. I am going into my last week next week ... read more
