We had a long day planned today as we were leaving Sintra for Estepona, Spain but wanted to spend half a day in Sevilla. So, we were on the road before 6am which was fine as everyone slept except Mark and the roads were empty. Mark and Deb had previously been to Sevilla, so we hoped to give the kids a flavor of the town with a half day visit. We were first confronted with parking difficulties. All parking garages we immediately found were full. So, after a tour of downtown Sevilla we parked across the river in an underground lot where we found a suitable spot for the bus. We started our short stay with a visit to the Cathedral which of course was impressive since it is one of the largest in Europe. The ... read more

It's only 1315 and I've had as much excitement as I need for a morning. The Plan: get to the regional train station via the metro. Leave lots of time. Relax!! What Actually happened: got up at 9 had breakfast, checkout and get on Metro. I think the RENFE train is near the Palicio so we head to the west. (totally ignoring the name of the station I need is Atoches and is only 3stops away. We head the wrong way!! 90minutes,6trains,20 stops later..we make it to where we need to be (which would've been done in 4min, 1train, 3stops!!!)!! Get on long line for reservation and end up missing the 1145 train. Realize this....things move a little slower here!! Luckily though I am done with it at 1230..just in time for the 1305 train. El Torcal was easily one of the highlights of our time in Andalusia. We first read about it in that book again ‘1001 Natural Wonders You Must See Before You Die’ and decided to drive there from Granada. The place is similar to the rock formations at Punakaiki on the West Coast of New Zealand but on a much bigger scale. It is situated on the top of a mountain range behind Antequera. The park covers 17 square km of the most amazing limestone rock formations we had ever seen. The rock formations are considered to be some of the most impressive in Europe and was one part of the trip that exceeded our expectations. Quick geology lesson: (Thanks to the signs at the lookout!) The whole area was under sea until one hundred million years ... read more

I was rushed off that last blog entry.... for those of you who haven't used an internet cafe, you get LOGGED OFF..EXITED..TERMINATED..DONE ...etc when your time is up. Okay, where was I ? Okay, for us it is Friday night... we traveled today from 9am to 7pm.... and you heard, we still have no luggage!! ... We have lost all hope of ever seeing our luggage again..... I think perhaps the luggage is off on some adventure we may hear about soon. Perhaps too, we will be compensated for the cheap throwaway stuff I brought and be able to buy something good someday (if we ever get paid!) .. Oh, likely not though...did you hear the name of the airline we flew from London to Madrid ... it's not good.... Air Comet ! , I'm not ... read more

Geo: 28.9264, -13.7933I had a horrible nightmare last night. I dreamed that a giant cockroach crawled into bed with me. I was terrified. But then it became a blissful dream - it turned out that it was a giant female Spanish cockroach. It began tenderly caressing me, gently nibbling on me with its mandibles, and whispering sweet nothings to me in a sexy, sultry, southern Spanish accent. But then it bit my head off. These d@mn beds are so short in Spain! I couldn't even fit between the arms of the sofa bed - Ha took it instead for fear of B&H waking up to find my strangled, lifeless corpse in the living room. We made some Serrano ham and Canarian cheese sandwiches for lunch later and headed out the door. It was a quiet walk ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Sierra Nevada December 27th 2007

After Christmas and Boxing day came and went, we packed up our little rental car and headed out to the Sierra Nevada to enjoy a few days brushing up our (lack of) snow boarding skills. Sierra Nevada certainly was very different to the ski resorts in Austria. Definitely not as pretty, quite a different experience to be driving out to a ski resort, passing olive trees and cactus on the way! Unfortunately, the slopes were absolutely packed on our first day and not all the runs were operational so the learner slopes were covered in people in various stages of control! Due to a mix up with the instructors we only had a 40-minute lesson and were then left to practice. The magic carpet wasn’t running on the beginner slope so each trip down the hill ... read more

NO, we do not smell! But I better shave soon... getting a bit rough! Steven packed stuff in carry on, luckily since we only partially planned to live out of our carry on. LESSON LEARNED!!! We have almost abandoned hope of ever seeing our beloved luggage and ropas viejo again (old clothes). Perhaps theres $300 in our future for the loss!! 11am heading off to Palicio Real Click here for Palicio ... awesome gardens and tour, once again the Madrid card saves us a loonng wait at the ticket counter. We get some nice pictures ... 2 hours ... read more

Geo: 28.7383, -13.8681Up early for the flight to the Canary Islands. We had breakfast at "La Sirena Verde", a place just outside of the hotel. It was pretty early - 6 AM - you wouldn't think that any places would be open at this hour in Spain, because everybody is a night owl here and you wouldn't think anybody would be up this early for breakfast. But this is Spain - this restaurant likely wasn't open at 6 AM for early risers, it was probably open for people just going home from the clubs! Off to the airport - bye, bye Madrid! Bye, bye Spain! Bye, bye Spanish hotties! Sob ... sob ... luckily I stole a pack of tissues from the hotel to dry my tears! They smelled so sweet ... just like Spanish hotties! ... read more

Well, the blogs are much more sparse than I had hoped because I can´t get my phone connected to the internet. I have been blogging there off line, hoping to upload. Anyway, we´re fine and having a good time. Yesterday we spent in the Prado and Reina Sophia museums...they were great, we say Grecos, Goyas and Valaquez .... it was a lot more exciting than it sounds. The modern art was really nice and we found a few photography exhibits, which were the highlight of the day. Stayed out late and had some paella on the way home. We are quite acclimated and sleeping well and getting around on the metro easily. Oh, the BAGS are still lost, we are surviving on very few clothes and stuff, today, we have to get some supplies, the 2 ... read more

Geo: 40.4167, -3.70327Ben mistakenly woke me up at 6:00 AM. He thought I intended to be up at 6:00, but I wanted to wake up at 6:30. A guy needs his beauty rest to have any shot with the Spanish hotties! We ate the leftovers for breakfast. I was completely stuffed - there was way too much food for dinner yesterday and way too much left for breakfast today. The Underground wasn't running yet so we needed to flag down a cab for Victoria station, where we would be taking the Gatwick Express to the airport for our Madrid flight. I ate my yogurt on board. Did I really need to eat more food after such a massive breakfast? Not really! The conductor came around looking for tickets - I simply showed her a scrap piece ... read more
