Both yellow and orange warnings remained in place the morning we rose to ride 77km to La Garovilla. Meteorological services had referred to it as an atmospheric river / bomb, and reconciling two main weather forecasts, we determined a window of opportunity existed sometime before 2pm. That meant getting up well before the sunrise, which in Olivença was 8.45am (roll on the winter timing late October!). I did not sleep much that night, concerned about our safe passage. Casa Bari in the old town, a large townhouse type casa with blue tiled stairwell and old lighting, had been a beautiful stay in one of the cleaner spots we’ve passed, pristine Olivença. We’d been lazy enough on the second day to wander the old centre, its gates, and marvel at the lack of tourists. Extremadura was not ... read more

It is day 9 and a half into the Iberian trip. We left our campsite after a very entertaining evening watching our new neighbours a Spanish couple trying to find the perfect spot. He placed his levelling blocks under his wheels to raise it a couple of inches and the van kept going up and then came down again. We smiled as he paced out his pitch to work out exactly which electric cable was the one he needed to use. We use guesswork so found his precision quite amusing. Whilst all this was going on his wife donned industrial gloves used in the nuclear industry to wash her smalls. Behind all this another spanish caravanner was moving his van and his car into the part of the site which was closed to visitors. It was ... read more

I woke up this morning ready to see Merida. I was really looking forward to seeing Merida because it is filled with Roman ruins. Merida used to be the capitol of the Roman region that is currently Spain. Not only does Merida have a lot of Roman sights, but a lot of it is still in great shape. I wasn’t quite sure what kind of ruins were here, but I found a map and went off on my way. The map ended being a tad off, so I followed the signs that led to the Roman theatre and amphitheater. I looked at the information for buying tickets and saw that I could get in to several things for the student ticket of 6 dollars. I started off going into the theatre and amphitheater. Since I never ... read more

I got up early this morning so I could eat free breakfast, check out, take the metro, and make it to my bus. The bus time ended up being earlier than I thought, and the metro took longer than I thought. Of course the metro doesn’t make it too easy for someone carrying a heavy suitcase, so I ended up dragging my suitcase down a lot of stairs and up. One of the times, a guy helped me carry it up the stairs. I ended up rushing because I was worried I was going to be late, but luckily made it to my bus. It took about 4-5 hours to get from Lisbon to Merida. I was really sad to leave Portugal behind, but I am happy to be back in Spain. I'm not in my ... read more

The clocks went forward last night. We had a late breakfast in the hotel and left at about 10am for our leisurely drive down into Southern Spain. We have managed 335 miles today, giving up the journey at 4.45pm. We have travelled from Burgos today through the mountains to our overnight stop at Merida. The dramatic part of the journey took us high up through the clouds. Being a Sunday, roads were very quite. No toll roads either. We stopped just outside Merida in our search for a hotel, and met up with three English bikers from Cheshire who were enroute to Africa. Stayed at the Sayago Hotel. No Wi-Fi tonight but a relaxing stay assured. Got up next morning to find that we had been the only guests in the whole hotel overnight. We will ... read more

Monday 11.1 2010 day 88 Merida We both woke up feeling very cold and sick. Although Merida (Spain) is a world heritage town with lots of roman things including a Dina temple that looks like the one we saw a few days ago in Portugal in faced the whole city look very much like Evora At one point we took a wrong turn and was on an identical turn around that we had done in Evora. There where Roman gladiator rings as well but as we were so tires and sick from the cold night in the room we decided to get out of town after a very quick look around and headed back to Portugal this time to Lisbon as we got closer the traffic was so bad and it just looked like another city ... read more
