Hola Immediate problems which is nice. Not the best start to our trip. If the rest is anything like the first bit then we going to have a trying time! Checking in online last night for a 7am departure, we gound that those lovely people at Iberia Airways indiscriminately decided to cancel us off our flights to Madrid and then the connecting flight to Quito without telling us!! After a period of panic where we found there was no way of getting those flights we managed to get BA to sort it for us, so we got a later flight out to Madrid with BA, had to fork out for a hotel then get a flight to Quito the next day (6th). Luckily our tour doesn’t depart until the 7th at 10 am. And Iberia will ... read more

I had a friend meet me at the airport to pick me up because I am not at all familiar with the city so having someone was nice. Instead of taking the taxi, which is one, expensive, and two, a rip-off for tourists or people who look like tourist, we decided to take the metro for a couple cents rather (10 trips is ... read more

Allow me to introduce you to the new members of the Mateo Inurria household. Mac, short for Mackenzie and Cheese, short for Chester. I actually don’t know what kind of turtles they are, I need to do some internet research, but they like their crunchy shrimp, their mommy and aunties. They are so much better to watch then T.V. So cute. I have to admit though, I have gone through a bit of post modem depression. I just wasn’t sure if I was able to take on the responsibilities that these two little ones needed. I realized that I could do it. I may not be perfect, but it is a work in progress and we will all learn how to cope with whatever may arise. We go for long walks to the park. We have ... read more

So I just finished taking my final exam; yes, I already have had a final and have only been taking classes for a month. College in Spain doesn´t start until October, so for the month of September, I have been in the "intensive one month program" to get us accustomed to classes in Spanish and caught up to what a normal Spanish student should know. So I have finished with my first month of classes and will have a new schedule come October. This past weekend was my first full weekend in Madrid. On Friday we went bar hopping and went to a discoteca. I met some really nice madrileños (Spaniards from Madrid) at one bar so was able to practice my spanish skills with them :) Saturday, Maggie, Kate, and I took the teleferico (cable ... read more

The 56 hour Tour of Madrid Anyone who tells you that you should take an overnight bus somewhere so you won’t have to find a place to stay for the night, is either a chronic insomniac anyway, or a college student. Either way, it’s highly unlikely that they have your health or well-being in mind, and you should keep that in mind when making plans with them in the future. That being said, I will now proceed to give my advice for how to see all of Madrid and Segovia in only 56 hours, starting from the Plaza de Armas bus station en Seville on a Thursday night at midnight. First, buy your tickets several days in advance because it’s a very popular bus: its departure time allows for a 7am arrival in Madrid. Otherwise, you’ll ... read more

¡Hola amigos! I just finished taking my first exam here in Spain. It was okay, not too hard, but I had to study for it. Just wanted to give you all an update on my week.... Monday, Maggie Holmes, Kate Keegan, and I went exploring around Madrid. We went to Plaza de Espana (and saw this HUGE statue of Don Quijote, he´s everywhere in Spain...), los jardines del Palacio Real, y el parque del oeste. At el parque de oeste, you can look out over the city. Plus, the park faces the west, so we watched the sun set behind the mountains, SO PRETTY!! Then Wednesday right after class, I went with the other Furman students to see a movie- "Las Princesas." It was about these two girls who are prostitutes in Madrid...very depressing, but it ... read more

I must apologise for how slack I've been, since returning from Spain I've been on the go but now I will complete what I had started. Basically arrived in Madrid and trekked my way to my hostel. Still not to well I wasn't really in the mood to talk to many people and go out partying so I settled myself in and wandered around for a little while checking out the area. My hostel was located very close to the Opera house and the Palace. While sitting in the Plaza de Issabella I met a lovely girl from the USA who had been living there for the last year. She gave me a few tips of places to go including all the obvious sightseeing spots and a couple of places I wouldn't of considered going to. ... read more

I have been here for 2 weeks and have fallen in love with the Spanish way of life. Madird is such a beautiful city with plenty of galleries, museums and other interesting places to visit. The Museo del Prado for example is the art gallery where you can admire the works of Goya and El Greco to name but two. The city is vibrant and great for young people. There are several parks where you can hang out,or if thats not your scene then there are plenty of coffee shops and the like where you can watch the world go by and chat with friends. At night the city really comes to life. The madrilenos, like vampires, are creatures of the night. They pack into bares and discotecas, which incidentally stay open until 5 or 6am!! ... read more

Craig and I decided to venture out today to El Escorial and El Valle de Los Vaidos, located 50 minutes Northwest fo Madrid. Felipe II built the Monestary of El Escorial as a gift to God and to commemorate the victory of the Spanish over the French at the battle of San Quintin in 1557. The monestary contains several sections. The Palacio Real, where Felipe II lived in the summer and evenetually died. The Panteon Real was one of my favorite parts. It consists of several rooms which contain the tombs of most of the Spanish monarchs and their families. I felt like I was entering a vampires lair when I entered the main room where all the kings and queens are buried. The tombs are stacked one on top of each other from floor to ... read more
