I have been here for three weeks now.... and no ...unfortunately I not fluent in Spainish! Its harder than I thought.... But I have adjusted. It still takes me all day sometimes to do little tasks like charge my cell, but for the most part I can confidently go into a grocery store and get what I want. I have moved into my very humble apt. I have my own room and it was absolutely terrible when I first moved in...it took three days to just clean my room not to mention the kitchen.... I have a washing machine and t.v...the only thing I don't have is interent connection in my house. So I have to walk down the street, which is really quite pretty. Its lined with trees on either side and there are plenty ... read more

So, Andy and I are at the internet cafe spending some quality time as brother and sister on our last day together. I leave tomorrow morning for Barcelona to catch my plane the next day to Paris. We are going to go see the Museo del Prado and the Cathedral today and meet Dulce later for a drink on her favorite Terrazza. The boys met some Germans at their hostel who were traveling with their school. Andy had a chance to practice his German skills and faired pretty well according to one girl. The boys leave on Sunday for Barcelona and stay until Thursday when they leave for Rome. I think we are all looking forward to the part of our trip where we can see water and just dive in at last. Madrid is ridiculously ... read more

So we took our first ryanair flight and it was very reminiscent of southwest airlines....no complaint there. The airport in Valladolid was about 2 12 hours outside of Madrid, so we took a bus and saw some of the Spanish countryside on the way. My friend Cristina picked me up at the bus station and I left the boys to figure out the metro to get to their hostel. Cris showed me around the center of Madrid after driving a while to find a parking spot. We ended up running into the boys while Cris was showing me around, ¨And this is Plaza Santa Ana and this is Calle...and there is your brother.¨ Kind of random, but I guess Madrid is smaller than it looks. They found their hostel fine. Today I am just walking around ... read more

As we sit on the fast moving intra-Spain railroad traveling from Madrid to Barcelona, I finally get the opportunity to put down many of my thoughts and feelings that have been building up since our arrival to Spain on Thursday morning. Many of you have probably been hearing about Europe on the news recently (for my opinions check out the other blog, Perlin and Son, at perlinandson.blogspot.com) but this should certainly serve as a different description. This is our first blog from our amazing European adventure and you are reading it so as they say in Spain, Hola. Why blog at all? As someone dear to me recently said, she doesn't like to journal, because the point of writing thoughts down is to have somebody read them, and not to sit in a secret book. In ... read more

It is almost too much! Its true there is a real vibe and energy in Madrid. You can't seem to find it anywhere else. At least so far that I have looked. It has been quite an adjustment, even for me, who tried to be as prepared as I could. Its just, now, instead of "vacationing" and taking everything in, in such a small amount of time, I am now trying to survive. EVERYTHING is different and strange, almost wrong. But thats becuase I don;t know any better. And hen I do it should all make more sense. There is no sense of a "quiet hour" everyone includng construction workers are working at 1 in the morning because the sun has finally settled and a nice breeze in coming in. It's nuts! I am in school ... read more

Evening all, Just a quick note to let family (Hao, Hung & San) you know that I am alive and well and have reached Madrid in Spain. To the rest of you, I´m alive and have stumbled into an internet cafe despite my lack of spanish. You´ll be surprised/disgusted to hear that Delta Goodrem has reached Spanish radio. Those of you not in Australia won´t have any idea what that means, but anyway. I´ll keep this brief because it´s almost time for dinner. As mentioned, I´ve begun my tour and we started in Paris and worked our way down the west side of france and into spain and have finally reached Madrid. For me, the highlight has been the different food that´s been available for sampling. The duck gizzards in Bordeaux were a highlight, as well ... read more

Okay it´s has been a bit of while, so here is a summary of what I have seen and done of the last couple of weeks ... Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor, Palacio Real Went to some of the main tourist places in Madrid. Pretty easy to walk between them. Puerta del Sol. Supposedly the centre of Madrid. It has a clock tower from which I think distances to other places from Madrid are calculated. Plaza Mayor. The main square. I have to say that I was a little bit unimpressed. Lots of tourist restaurants. Managed to hide the truck delivering Heineken in the photos. Was more impressed with the main squares in cities in Lima. Palacio Real. Not really a fan of royalty, so was not willing to part with 9 Euros to see the ... read more

My day of travel from Barcelona to Madrid was a long one, but not by any means a waste. I arrived at the train station around 10am hoping to grab a direct train, but sadly every single direct train for the day was fully reserved, ugh. Luckily the girl at the tickets booth managed to work out a route for me to get to my destination. The 1500 train from Barcelona to Valencia, and the 1845 train from Valencia to Madrid. It worked very smoothly actually, but cost me about 5 hours of time. The train rides were, however, extremely scenic, and I enjoyed this a lot. From Barcelona to Valencia it was right along the meditaranian sea, very pretty beaches and coastal towns. From Valenica to Madrid it was uphill most of the way and ... read more
