July 3, 2014 Today I embark on my two-month journey of adventure and self-discovery. It sounds cliche to commence this way and perhaps it's even more cliche to begin by acknowledging the cliche. In any case, I'm looking to get lost for a bit and to open my eyes and my heart to the world around me. Meanwhile, clearing my mind of unnecessary concerns and filling it with wonderment and gratitude to have been given this amazing opportunity. I begin my story from a turbulent plane that departed from Paris and arrives in Malaga, Spain. This is the second leg of my flight as I initially departed from Los Angeles with a layover in Paris. Sleep-deprived from weeks of insomnia and ripe with the scent of my own sweat, I look forward to the last leg ... read more

Hola de Málaga! We have arrived after spending a second day in Madrid. I finally met my friend, Sigrid! We've been friends through the skating world but never met til today. She took us around to some great parts of the city-namely parts of the park we didn't make it to yesterday. The Atoche station's little rainforest was impressive. Talk about turtles! Finally got to try Jamón Iberico de Bellota. Specially fed Iberian pigs. It was quite tasty! Found my favorite yogurt in the world at Corte Inglés...& had two...& more Maria cookies! They've been my snack on the run. Took the train to Málaga & arrived 22:00 & temp was 26C (a little warmer than 75F). Our hostel backs up to the Mediterranean w/a street in between. It's fantastic. Took a walk, tapas for dinner. ... read more

Having previously thought my hotel was in the back of beyond it was quite a relief to find out that if I strolled passed a couple of very nice churches and over the river that is not a river, but is in fact a long, wide strip of wasteland where people walk their dogs and skateboard, I would actually be on the edges of the rather small city centre of Malaga. Picking up a warm croissant and freshly squeezed orange juice from the market I began my meander through the back streets until I came to one of the main thoroughfares which was being lined with thousands of seats and barriers in preparation for the Holy Week celebrations that were beginning in 2 days time. I eventually made my way towards the Cathedral where I picked ... read more

We are full today, so please take any available seat. The captain’s voice was blissfully ignored by the majority, as the families continued to hunt for available seats together with enough space in the overhead compartment into which to cram their oversize hand baggage. The plane was running over on it’s turn round, so most had not been intercepted in the queue and invited to lodge their luggage in the hold at vast expense or try desperately to get it to fit the unyielding bag measuring devices. There was slight delay waiting for the checked in bag, due to yet another strike. It was too much for some as the heat built and they immediately swapped their shirts for some rather fetching vests. A new range of body art was about to be unleashed on the ... read more

Malaga and Granada in southern Spain 27 August 2013 After a hot night at Torremolinos we always feel good after a shower and good breakfast. We are noticing the numbers of people in the caravan parks are starting to reduce as all European countries head towards 15/9 when most schools go back. There is usually a breeze blowing as we sit outside the camper under the awning. We were really looking forward to this day as we are in the Iberian Peninsula where the Moores ruled for over 700 years and left very distinctive buildings (palaces, mosques) which the Spanish added to when they ‘reconquered’ the area in the 15th century (1492). The area we drove through, skirting the Sierra Nevada, was covered in mainly olive trees with a few vineyards. Malaga, a thriving port for ... read more

Well, I'll just be quick the flight bit...crying all the way to the airport with my mum. So very emotional, but I got chatting to a lady in the queue for luggage check in and started to feel a bit better. All went pretty, smooth. I didn't even bleep when going through customs. Flight was ok, but I can see why Ryan air flights are the cheapest (not that I'm moaning). I got chatting the lady next to me who was lovely and I was getting excited. Arrived in Malaga.. A relief as I collected my backpack, which luckily was the 2nd down the conveyor belt and I strolled out into the foyer, took a deep breath and smiled. Found the taxi rank, the driver did not know where my hostel was so he gave me ... read more

Finally, the doctor gave me (Nina) an official "go" - and here we went, travelling again - this time together (Markus went on his own to Thailand in January - but this was too risky for me). After 3 abdominal operations in 2012 I got kind of a "new" life - and it was no question that travelling will be part of my second life. As I am still scared of the consequences of unfamiliar food for my poor stomach, we had decided to take it slowly in the beginning. Some days in Andalucía seemed to be a good choice, with decent doctors available (just in case) and more or less save food. Thanks to Easy Jet, we had an incredably cheap flight from Geneva to Malaga. The downside of this flight was that it left ... read more

Salut!

Well, we arrived in Malaga on the 21st, and had such a great time that we decided to stay until the 25th! We made some pretty awesome friends at the hostel we were staying at, so that also influenced how long we wanted to stay. Malaga is a fairly small town, but we made the most of it. After having a low key day and night our first day which included a trip to the beach, we decided to go out and do a walking tour of the city on our second day. Our guide Brian who is from New York, showed us some hidden areas that were great for overlooking the city and port. We started in Plaza de Merced, the main plaza in town, Teatro Romano a ruined Roman theatre, Malaga´s 16th century Cathedral ... read more

When I think of Malaga, I think of one thing - holiday resorts. The last leg of my trip was a day in Malaga before flying home to Ireland and my expectations were low. Fortunately I was proved to be wrong! I was staying in a hostel in the Old Town within easy walking distance of the centre. Malaga's history outdates Cadiz. Founded around 770BC by the Phoenicians, it has seen rulers from Ancient Carthage, the Roman Empire, and Arab Empire before coming under Christian rule again after the Reconquista. The archaeological remains and monuments all these eras have had the effect of making the city "open museum", displaying its rich history of more than 3,000 years. After setting myself up in the hostel (with people again yay) I walked downtown to see what the city ... read more
