Lisboa Stopped a purse snatching! Outside of Praca Figueira with statue of man on horse and many animal rear-ends, I saw a man cramming a huge purse into his tiny hand bag. When he noticed me watching him, I asked him, "Is it yours?" .. it didn't look like his colour. He gave me an utterly surprised look, as "oh, how did this get in my possession?!" and behind me a woman was frantically searching for her purse, so i tried to get her attention. He then ran the massive hand bag back to her claiming some boys took it and he was a hero, then pretended to make a call on his mobile and blend in to the crowd. Schmuck.. But having done my good deed for the day, I treated myself to a Pasteis ... read more

After a relaxing three week winter break, the time had come to return to my current home, SPAIN. The process of getting from Minneapolis to Málaga proved to be less than simple though.... here's what happened: Amanda decided to visit when I went back, which was very nice, the trip is so long; it was great to have a companion. We arrived in Atlanta without any problems. BUT THEN, we were bumped from the flight to Madrid. So we ended up taking a flight to New York and stayed the night with our lovely cousin Brenda. She was so wonderfully hospitable to put us up in a moments notice, we were so thankful! The next day we took a flight to Barcelona from JFK but when we checked-in our luggage was still in Atlanta and some ... read more

Living in a foreign country with an American poses many obstacles to true cultural immersion. To find yourself entirely independent of all American comforts is rare, unless you truly push yourself. They say that it is easy to stay in the "American bubble"- which means hanging with Americans, speaking English and involving yourself in American activities. When you live abroad, whether it be volunteering, studying, living or simply traveling- to shake all the comforts of home and put yourself in compromising, vulnerable, uncomfortable and usually awkward position is not easy and one must be very brave. I am proud to say that I have finally gotten to the point where I can independently travel abroad, go places and experience people without hesitation. Well...at least in Spanish speaking countries. I am fortunate enough to be teaching adults ... read more

Although Malaga is apart of the mainland Spain, it was similar to the other two islands, the history really stood out. It was discovered over 2,000 years ago by the Philistines, and was conquered by the Greeks, the Romans, the Arabs, and ultimately the Spanish. We managed to see quiet a lot for only 3 hours. We saw A Bull Ring along with the museum. This museum had stuffed bulls, and pictures of original Matadors. The stadium is more of a training stadium, there are 25 games a year and most of the matadors go to Mexico, Venezuela, and mainland Spain. Then we saw a very old castle from the 14th century built by the Muslims. This castle is half original and half recreated. Most of the steps of the castle were destroyed but were ... read more

Malaga was a cold, harsh, and damp mistress. We arrived to chilly, wet weather and decided on the hop-on hop-off bus which goes to all the major highlights. Unfortunately when the weather is not cooperating this really is not the best way to see the city. Open-air double-deckers offer the best views when you ride on the top floor. We did have some moments of sun, and when we popped our heads out the city was beautiful. The bus took us through the core city which is an interesting mixture of historic Arab and Spanish architecture as well as modern buildings. There is quite a bit to see in the city. Pablo Picasso was born here. There is an active bullfighting ring. The cliffs overlooking the city are home to remains of an Arab fortress, and ... read more

It's November 9th. Have I really been in Spain for nearly two months? Time has flown by, I think when there are so many new things to become accustomed to, it's easy to forget how fast it's all happening. Although, I am thrilled that I have a solid sense of my schedule and am in a nice little routine. My life has truly begun as a Spaniard! I really couldn't be happier with my job. I think I said this in the last entry but I am teaching adults, at an official language school and they are fantastic! They want to learn and are curious about my topics of conversation. My friends from my program are all teaching children and they say most days are very unorganized and incredibly stressful because the kids are off the ... read more

Happy Birthday to Abby! She is 3 years old today. We docked in the port of Malaga at 7:00AM after another night of smooth sailing. We had a good buffet breakfast and were off the ship at 8:30 for a half day of touring. Malaga is a bustling city with a heavy rush hour (just like home) except the cars and scooters are still smaller than American vehicles. FYI, the price of gas in all three Spanish ports has been about 1.10-1.20 euro per liter which is about $7.00 per gallon. Our tour went to a picturesque little village of Mijas about a half hour away, on the hills 1200 feet above the Costa del Sol (one of the popular Spanish beaches). Mijas has been kept looking as authentic as possible, reflecting the early lifestyle of ... read more
