Sylvia's dad drove Joyce, Sylvia, and I to Bratislava for the day while he was in meetings. We spent the day walking around the Old Town. We started at the President's palace and took a bus up to the hill where the castle is located. Unfortunately it is being remodeled (it was burned in the 1800s and has never been fully restored). We walked down from the castle to the original part of Bratislava and saw the original square. The highlight of the day was St. Martin's Cathedral, which was the location of many famous Hungarian coronations, including Maximillian II and Maria Theresa. It is funny that in two days, we have visited the only two examples of gothic church architecture in Slovakia, as the other is located in Kosice. We ate a lunch of fried ... read more

Hi everyone, Nosdrove is what you should say as Cheers in Slovakia but my friend Kathy always says "Nice driving eh?!" because she can't pronounce it... This is some of the fun we are having after being together on the tour for the past week and a half. We arrived here in Bratislava today in southern Slovakia after taking 3 trains, one of which was a very local train that was standing room only. We fortunately had reserved seats. We had had such a great time in the High Tatras in the mountains where the views were spectacular, the local food divine and the weather nice and cool especially for sleeping. This afternoon in Bratislava, we just got a chance to tour around this afternoon and went to the town square which is quite beautiful with ... read more

Oh dear, I'm very sorry Slovakia, but you were just a bit... safe. It's a real shame but the torusit-hoards have well and truly infested nice-but-small Bratislava, feeding on the charm it may have once had. It wasn't horible but did not stand out, and mundane is the last thing you want from your travels. Sooo, how did I get there? Well the answer is my first ever night train. And I was aprehensive to say thje least. I'd read things and I'd heard things about Polish night-trains: people being gassed while they slept and robbed blind. But the reality for that it was safe and comfortable and full of other people on the "tourist trail"/ A quick intelude: at this point, I had the feeling I was on this so called tourist trail which, to ... read more

Bratislava is one of those cities that people simply reject off hand; case in point: when I was in Vienna 3 years ago, there were 3 Swedish guys who wanted to take the bus to Bratislava for the day, and everyone asked why - their reason: EuroTrip, the movie where the 4 Americans live like kings in the city for pennies. Now, to be fair, there is not a whole lot in the city, but it is worth the visit for a day. It does have a lovely area that feels very European with the outdoor cafes and the squares with churches and the weather was lovely. It also has a kosher restaurant (I’m not sure why) and provides real easy access to Vienna, as the two are the world’s 2 closest capitals. Thursday, May 29th: ... read more

This trip was early in November. The Aberdeen guys went through Amsterdam then onto Vienna. They then had a short bus trip over the border to Slovakia where they hooked up with The Lithgae Lads who had taken the a flight from Edinburgh to Pargue where they stayed overnight. They then took the train into Bratislava the following morning. This was our first venture into Eastern Europe where we found it very hard to spend our money with beer being 40p a pint!!... read more

Yeah, so looks like I'm in Bratislava now, pretty knackered and about to go to sleep. But I thought I should finally get my ass up and write something on this thing. The trip to Gdansk was rather bizarre...first I was standing with the other pathetic passengers in a giant queue on Hahn airport, waiting to board. They wouldn't even make an announcement, it was pretty frustrating just standing there for more than half an hour without knowing what's going on. Ten or so minutes after the flight should have started we could finally board. The flight itself went by real quick, and we were already approaching Gdansk, when the captain said we couldn't descent because of bad weather and fog. So the plane was flying a curve for about an hour over the city, which ... read more

Bratislava... It was here that I decided I needed to find a Slovakian wife. Why? Well let me tell you. We got into Bratislava and walked down the historical district towards our hostel. It was quite nice and we took out some Slovakian krowns which ended up being $45 and that lasted us the entire trip! We got to the hostel and messed around a bit on the computer and played some foosball. We went out that night for dinner. Here is where the major reason I NEED a Slovak wife. We got some tradition Slovakian food consisting of Pierogies and dumplings. I had a Slovakian type of cheese thing, similar to like a cottage cheese and sausage plate. It was FANTASTIC! It was one of the best things Ive ever tasted in my life. For ... read more

Ok so I haven’t exactly kept up with the blog. You see, I’ve had so much work and then I had Christmas break. I just haven’t had time to write. Well, as for my travels, I went to Bratislava and Vienna, then spent a weekend in Amsterdam and then spent two weeks home in Puerto Rico. About a month ago I was on my way to the airport with my friends Anna and Patrick to board our early morning flight to Bratislava, capital and biggest city in Slovakia. Every person we told, even a girl that was actually from Bratislava, questioned our reasons for going. Why not?, right. I mean, it is a legitimate place, even if most people never think about it. Ok so there is a reason. Our friend Shaun, who studies in Vienna, ... read more

The Argentian born Sicilian sitting next to me just said something about that, so I thought that'd be a fun title for today. So I left off in Prague. The 2nd, we went to Prague Castle and wandered around, despite that fact that it was absolutely freezing. The first thing we saw was the Lobowitz musuem which is a musuem about the Lobowitz family. They were a family of princes in Prague for about 6 centuries and incredibly rich and powerful. Their musuem was interesting, just because they had Beethoven's original manuscripts for his 4th and 5th symphonies because one of the princes was Beethoven's patron. Other than that, it was basically just a family history musuem. The rest of the Prague Castle was an effort of the Czech to prove how old Prague is. We ... read more

Typical, 15 minutes outside Prague it was white all the way to Bratislava/Vienna. Painless bus trip and apart from the ugly nylon coats and large shoulder padded 80's coats that the people wear Bratislava was lovely. The historical centre is less preserved than Prague but that was actually kind of nice.... read more
