Bratislava, 17-11-2007. With these lads from Down Under gone it looks like I will have the dorm all to myself tonight. Tomorrow will be leaving time for me, Budapest will be my next goal! After my McDonalds breakfast in the old town i finally walked up to the castle. Built on a hill, the castle - if you can call it that - dominates the city with breath taking views in all directions. Unlike my aussie friends who returned to the dorm each night well after three o'clock in the morning, I have not done much bar crawling but that does not disturb me much. Maybe I will visit some bars in Budapest. ... read more

Bratislava, 16-11-2007. A thick carpet of snow covered Bratislava this morning when I woke up. Bratislava is quite different from Praque despite its cobblestone alleys and old historical city centre. The Bratislava castle perched high on a hill, overlooks it all but I have to as yet get up there. Maybe this afternoon. My dorm at the Backpacker's Hostel is full with young australian males who where busy getting themselves loaded before venturing out to the local night clubs last night. They invited me to beer and patatas fritas and wanted to know all about Thailand once I told them I've been to this Country of the Smile on several occasions. They'll have stop-overs in Bangkok on their way back home. I happily told them all they wanted to know. ... read more

This past summer (July, 2008) I had the opportunity to get over to Bratislava for just a day when I was staying in Vienna. I am very glad I took the trip and would recommend it for others who might be exploring nearby Austria. I really only had time to take in the historic downtown so I can't really comment on greater Bratislava. Take some time to wonder around the historic part of town with its beautiful buildings and the church and castle the anchor the west side. I really enjoyed the quirky statues spread out in the downtown. Also, the view from castle is worth the walk up. There is also a very nice pedestrian walkway (with free wifi available) lined with shops down near the Danube. It seemed that one day was a good ... read more

15-11-2007. Sitting on a bench at Holesovice Railway Station watching the flakes of snow coming down I start to get a vague idea of the day ahaed. Bratislava is my new goal, it will take about four and half hours by loacl train. Feelling easy and relaxed and drinking a few cans of local brew, I watch how the landscape, the forests and little local villages slowly disappaer under a fine white blanket of snow. Haven't seen that cold stuff since Amanda was pregnant with our daughter Charlotte nearly three years ago now. By the time the train pulls into Bratislava Railway Station my relaxation turns into anxiety. Everything is white, cold and wet but I manage to get to the Backpacker's Hostel and pay two nights in advance for a bed in a dorm.... read more

BRATISLAVA 30.09.08 OK now it comes out that Bratislava is the city with the highest rate of kiwis outside New Zealand! Or maybe is all made for me so I will get used to it. The guy with the messy bed ended up being from NZ and in the room there are other two girls, also kiwis. Now we're wandering around the city and the only two people around that are english-speaking, guess what? Are kiwis! So kiwis rule. Forget about all that stories saying that Italians are everywhere. We lost it. Apart from that Bratislava looks like a pretty anonymous city, if it wasn't for the old town, Stare Mesto, which is truly lovely. South of the Danube river you could hardly believe what you see. It a crowd of concrete blocks and chimney towers, ... read more

Sat, 28 Sep, about 11:45 PM We got off yesterday with little incident, getting through Hartsfield with no delays and then making the connection in Prague with about ten minutes to spare. The only glich thus far is that Grandma doesn’t have her suitcase. It clearly took a wrong turn somewhere so now the bag police are out searching for it. We are hopeful it will show up before we leave Budapest tomorrow evening. Grandma is holding up quite well considering the circumstances. Nothing much happened today because it was spent mostly in just getting here. The boat is moored just down-stream from the parliament building on the Pest (flat) side of the river. Tomorrow AM we go on a bus tour to familiarize us with the city and then we are free in the afternoon. ... read more

Step & Dennis ... read more

Our last day in Polannd was very wet, we had great plans to see all of the things that we weren't able to on Friday, due to the holiday, but after wandering around Krakow all morning in the rain, we dis covered that everything was shut on the Saturday too. After eating too much Sauerkraut for lunch, we retreated to our hostel and got dry and warm again. The afternoon was spent watching the Olympics, amd preparing ourselves for the 7am train the next morning, that meant leaving the hostel at 6am! The journey to Bratislava was pleasantly uneventful, although we did have to share a carraige for five hours with two four year old hyperactive twins called julian and oscar shindler.... Not good when you're feeling particularly tired! our day in brataslava was spent waking ... read more
