Monday, 13 October OK, so we are all safely home and have had a full night’s sleep (at least some of us). We all have colds but fortunately nothing serious…a small price to pay for such a good trip. Here is what happened since the last post. 7 Oct - Miltenberg: We had a delightful walking tour of this quintessential Main River town. Squeezed between the river and the bordering hillsides it has one main street where the houses on one side back into the hillside and the houses on the other are a stone throw from the river. Fortunately it was too small and insignificant in WWII so it survived without a scratch. Today it is a major tourist attraction but without the touristy feel. It is a town where people live and work where ... read more

A Day in Wurzburg

Tuesday, 7 Oct Late We are on the move once again without any internet connection. The daily routine is to cruise all night, dock in the morning, have breakfast and be off the boat by about 9:30 or 10:00. We return to the boat late in the afternoon or stay in town for dinner and get back to the boat late. Shortly after we return the boat leaves and we are off again for our next stop. The only time we have reliable internet is when we are docked and then we have comparatively little time to do anything other than eat and get ready to leave. It is a great schedule for touring but not for much else. Yesterday was Würzburg with a walking tour of the downtown, the prince-bishop’s palace and then a wine ... read more

Well Into Germany

Sunday, October 05, 2008 We have had only spotty internet access because of all the low bridges we have to go under. They have to clear the top deck of everything and lower all the antennas. Since the internet connection to the ship is wireless, we have no connection when the antennas are down. This will go out sometime. The ship is very comfortable and brand new. It entered service April of this year. Almost all cabins have large sliding glass doors that let in lots of air and frame the passing countryside. Forward are the lounge on the top deck and the dining room on the second deck. The sun deck is open the entire length of the boat but is currently not available because of all the low bridges. Everything folds flat so the ... read more

Almost to Germany

Thursday, 2 Oct, 10:15 AM Still in Austria cruising toward Passau, our first stop in Germany. The scenery is reminiscent of the Hudson around West Point; wooded slopes coming right down to the river. We are waiting for a lecture on European styles of architecture to start at 10:30. Yesterday we stopped in two places, Dürnstein and Mellk, both of which are in one of the wine producing areas of Austria, the Wurchau valley of the Danube. Dürnstein is a small village perched right above the river where we took a walking tour through narrow cobbled streets. Durnstein is noted for two things, good wine and the place where Richard the Lion Hearted was imprisoned and ransomed on his way home from the crusades. We spent a little over two hours in town, the first of ... read more

Sat, 28 Sep, about 11:45 PM We got off yesterday with little incident, getting through Hartsfield with no delays and then making the connection in Prague with about ten minutes to spare. The only glich thus far is that Grandma doesn’t have her suitcase. It clearly took a wrong turn somewhere so now the bag police are out searching for it. We are hopeful it will show up before we leave Budapest tomorrow evening. Grandma is holding up quite well considering the circumstances. Nothing much happened today because it was spent mostly in just getting here. The boat is moored just down-stream from the parliament building on the Pest (flat) side of the river. Tomorrow AM we go on a bus tour to familiarize us with the city and then we are free in the afternoon. ... read more

Two days before we leave and everything seems to be progressing smoothly. Mom and Grandma are running errands and making last minute purchases while I am staying out of the way. It seems like the biggest issue is how to pack everything without having to resort to a SeaLand container. As you can tell from the pictures, I clearly have everything under control while Mom and Grandma may still need some help.... read more

Test of The System A Trip to Calloway I discovered this web site because Lisa Whitney's daughter is spending the semester studying in Spain and she is using it to let people know how she is doing. I thought we might use it for our river trip so I am playing with it before we leave. The only traveling Mom and I have done recently is to do a team-building program at Calloway Gardens this last Monday. We drove down Sunday afternoon and then came back Monday evening after one false start. We were about ten miles from Calloway when Mom thought she had left a sweater in the room. She knows how I hate to turn around once started, so she said not to worry about it - just drive on home since she ... read more
